I think that one of the reasons she is so good is that she has unparalleled listening skills.

Angelina has changed my life. She has done that since she was 7. I still don't understand it. Her ethnic origins are Swedish, Persian, and Japanese, despite being born and raised in Norway. I have no idea where the surname 'Astar' comes from, but it sure is appropriate. 😎

If you notice in about 99% of Angie’s covers, she is always the lead. The best accompaniments are the ones that play off her. She’s s our Persian princess!

Angelina is also reading the lyrics while she is singing as well.

She never competes with the original artist, but gives us a different way to love the song. And usually, Angelina puts the music second and puts the lyrics and the vocals first. Especially with melancholy themes (even themes that you didn’t realize were melancholy), Angelina lives the lyrics so clearly and personally that we understand what the song is really about. With the Mamas and the Papas, their amazing sound and harmony was their trademark. Angelina gives us the lyrics and we feel their weight, as we did in Bohemian Rhapsody, or Suspicious Minds, or Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road. Five years ago, I realized she was the best singer I’ve ever heard (the song was A Million Years Ago) and she’s gotten better every year.

Ivan was recommended to Angelina by a family friend as her Los Angeles accompanist for these sessions. As you can see, she is not all that familiar with the song and has to refer to the lyrics as she sings. This, apparently, was her standard modus operandi. Very little rehearsal for a song chosen at the last minute. 😎

And she is reading the lyrics from a sheet.

Hi Christi. When I first heard Angelina's take on this classic 60s pop song about 2 years ago, I couildn't believe it. She just reinvented the song into something brand new. This was my favortie Angelina performance for quite awhile. But you know, she just keeps getting better and better, so it's hard for any of her performances to remain at the top for long. Still, this is an early example of her bravery; she is not afraid to make any song her own. Having been a fan and a patron now for about 4 years, I have heard probably 99.9% of everything she has done. Angelina is my favorite singer, and no one is a close second. Today is April 29, 2023, and she will release her new single (Love Don't Let Me Go) from her upcoming album on Friday, May 5th. I've heard the teaser and it's very enticing. I believe Stardom is right around the corner for Angelina, and I have mixed feeling about that. But que sera, sera. Best wishes, Christi.

Ivan performed with Angelina in 2018, her first year in LA. Ivan was born in Mexico and moved to California to complete his education and work in an office. Ivan has such a lovely way to support and follow Angelina's voice and phrasing. He frequently visited Angelina's home after work to jam and record these videos.

Every time I listen to Angelina, I am just floored by the greatness that comes out of her mouth. I always expect it’s gonna be good but then boom it’s overpowering!

Hi Christi, sorry I missed the live. I just watched it and the whole reaction, conversations with the angels, what's been said about Angelina, collaborations with Pontus and Alan felt exactly like the podcast's title, "Wrapped in a Warm Blanket". You have seen how humanity has been derailed towards negativity more so in the past 3 years and now I feel there is hope. What Angelina and many young artist are focused on is the human side of things, getting us on the right path for a better tomorrow because it's what they are hoping for, for them, the future. It may take an artistic army to get through to billions but it can take just one like Angelina to lead the army through the battlefield and touch 1 person at a time. Angelina new song coming out May 5th..Love don't let me go ❤

The musician is student, immigrant from Mexico Ivan Mendez. Mendez moved to the United States when he was around 12 years old and says that the transition was difficult at first. “I don’t want to say it was a culture shock, because it’s not the same move to America from Mexico as the move to America from say, Europe…but I would say it was somewhat of a culture shock.” Leaving behind his mother and hometown of Colima in Mexico, he says, was extremely difficult. “The first year was really hard, trying to learn the language, trying to adopt a culture, trying to get friends. It was just everything,” Mendez said. He said it took him about two years to really pick up English and find himself friends who would help him with his new language. “I tried my best. Every time I was in a class, I’d sit down and watch how people move their mouth. Try to pick it up from there,” he said. “I’d repeat a lot, everything I heard. Somebody would say a word, and I’d repeat it until I got it down.” Mendez felt it was extremely important for him to assimilate to his new home. “If you move here from another country, you must learn English in order to succeed. You can get by just speaking Spanish, but you’re not really going to go farther than anybody else.” “Ivan’s just been on this great journey and path in life and so we saw an opportunity to help him along with his journey,” said Joe Coughlin. Mendez says his new family was a perfect fit and that the adoption was the influence that split the old Ivan into the new Ivan. “I started to get so much more education about everything; life and even music perspectives,” said Mendez. Majoring in business marketing, Mendez says his priorities are school, then the band, then helping out with the family business. Although music is a passion of his, he says being an international student means he has to choose his educational career path carefully. “Because I’m an international student, fees are very, very high for me, so if there’s a class I want to take, I really have to think about if I’ll get something really good out of it.” He says a three-unit class for him costs around $1,000, which is another reason why he chooses to major in business rather than music. He says he does have to sacrifice a lot for all the work that goes into being a student and musician.

Its one of my favs, so gorgoius. According to Ivan, it's a spontanous song choice and she's making it up as she goes - that's mad crazy.

Sorry I missed this live but did not get any notification. I have been watching Angelina's videos for almost 10 years, and have been a music lover all my life (80 years). There is just no one like her; her musicality, tone, control, vibrato, and on and on; everything about her voice, and what she does with every song she does, is just out of this world! The one thing that is most amazing about her and the songs she does at home with no production "magic" is how often she can be seen looking down reading the words on her phone or pad. And, as with this song, she is completely reinventing the song 'on the fly (Rearranging the song as she sings it)'! 12 years old, has not practiced the song, has only told the guitarist "just follow my lead", does not know the words (at least not totally), often singing the song setting down, and does this in just one take, is just not humanly possible! EXCEPT for Angelina Jordan! Yes she is a God sent "Angel"ina! Oh, and Christi, as always I loved your reaction and comments !

That was all wonderful: my feeling is that her squeal/giggle at the end was a spontaneous expression of delight that it had worked... that what we had witnessed was a moment of creation - she had envisaged this radical reworking of the song, tried it out with Ivan and it just worked, beautifully... a bit like her reaction when she was 6 in the booth singing "I Who Have Nothing" and she successfully hit the high-belt and pumped her fists and smiled broadly... :)

Man, sorry to miss your livestream Christi! I completely forgot about, or I was too sleepy to wake up! LOL I've been listening to Angelina since 2020 and she completely just sucked me in to her rabbit hole of music. I'm 52 years old, listen to music from the 1950's to present, all kinds of genres, and she is the only artist that has me this excited since Michael Jackson. Her talent is out of this world. Hearing other artists and producers talk about her is like hearing them talk about the second coming of a major superstar. She's slowly getting a reputation of being a one-take artist. Stargate, the Grammy Award winning record producing and songwriting team composed of Tor E. Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen, have said that they have worked with many major artists, and they can only think of a few who can sing a song from beginning to end in one take....Beyonce, Sam Smith, and Angelina Jordan. Quite impressive!

Christi, What a wonderful presentation. There are not a great deal of live reactions like this And I think you set the standard. It was not rushed and everybody got to chime in if they wished. The first time I heard this version of the song I was mixed because I was so familiar with the original. But this grew on me quickly and I realized that the melancholy feeling she was trying to elicit matched the lyrics and created a whole new emotional experience. In essence it is genius but that's not surprising for Angelina even at a young age. I hope you are able to do more of these as your analysis is always insightful and enjoyable. Peace out.

Do you know that last week Angelina released new song Love Don't let me go - already has 550k views.

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out (maybe even in this very reaction video, since I'm not even halfway through it as I'm typing this), but Alan Papier's video about this song and Angelina's cover of it (and those of several other artists) is a great resource. I strongly recommend everyone go watch that. The one shortcoming is that he doesn't include Sia's version from the _San Andreas_ film soundtrack, which seems to me to be the one that Angelina was primlarily basing her version on. It features the same basic melodic alteration that Angelina uses here, but is sung very differently (not surprisingly). It's also quite bombastic, musically (also not surprisingly, given the subject matter of the film). Angelina's version is absolutely exquisite, and fits the meaning of the lyrics better than any other cover I know of (something that Alan also points out, rather poetically).

Not near being one of my fav AJA ditties. Maybe cause never been appreciatove of the original, but she does a great change-up here, and while sporting a great shirt!!!!

Las Vegas, the concert just announced a ticker mattress at sell out really fast to be in Weston. She didn’t win last year they’re gonna do every other year but I understand she’ll have a standing or I guess concert every other year Portsmouth, Massachusetts, New Hampshire mass I was there place was full.
