    20:37 the opponent has 8 minutes on the clock and blunders his queen in 3 seconds. It always blows my mind how fast some of these people try to play...

    People who complain that the four knights game is “boring” are either total beginners who get lost in the initial symmetry and don’t know any better or are the same clowns who hang their queen in 3 seconds with 8 minutes still on the clock. I don’t play it as white but when I see it as black I don’t mind at all. The symmetry doesn’t last, just like in this game, and there’s several different lines the game can follow into the middlegame and beyond, which is more than I can say for the London.

    49:00 if you know you’re moving the knight, just do it and maybe you don’t have to calculate the whole second line, save the time

    Usually, what I do is use my intuition to come up with different moves, and if I come up with more than one good move, that's when I start calculating. Of course, I'm always calculating to avoid blunders, but I only spend time to think when I have options.

    The science of when exactly it is a good idea to 'go with your gut' is called heuristics and it has been studied extensively by Daniel Kahnemann. It's interesting to read about too because Dr. Kahnemann is a great author and pretty hilarious for a scientist.

    I enjoy your videos,. I am a beginner, have been playing for less than year and have dropped from 660 to 408 in a week, so obviously I need all lot of help. I need some advice, would it be better for me to play 30 minute games or continue to play 15/10 minute games? I am on a fixed income so I can’t afford individual lessons. Please respond with your thoughts. Thank you. Jack

  • @thewrittenlegalist8110

    30 minutes. If you dropped to 408, you need as much time as possible to think through your moves

  • @zBrain0

    @zBrain0

    I know you're probably looking for advice from Nelson, but just in case he doesn't get the time to reply: in my experience when you are just starting out you need the extra time to calculate. Once you start getting better with the longer time controls you will start to see things faster. If you really want to practice you could try some 24-hour games. They take a long time but it gives you the opportunity to really think about every single move. 30 minute is good if you have the time. When I was 700 rated I tried to play a lot of 10 minute games but I found I wasn't really getting that much better. Switching to longer time controls gave me the time to calculate. Then after a while you start to develop the intuition that Nelson was talking about at the beginning of the video.

    0:40 Game #1 13:48 Game #2 25:00 Game #3 42:04 Game #4 ------- 29:35 I've read that masters will simply not see bad moves, like intermediate players will not see illegal moves. 36:41 And after Black captures the rook and promotes the pawn to a queen, it's check, and he STILL gets the white bishop. 52:19 Maybe the Game Review totals up the blunders, etc. 53:02 The Bxf2+ is the Spanish Inquisition! 53:41 Nelson: "Look for mate." Stockfish: "It's mate in 12." 56:45 "It's easy to play logical moves and still mess it up." That's the problem I'm having with lichess's puzzles. And they only give you one chance to get the complete solution. 57:14 It's because ... Bb7+ allows ... Nf5+; ... Bf5+ doesn't. Yes! 57:55 ... Qxf3+. It loses the knight, but ... g6+ draws the king closer to Black's side. Yes! 59:20 ... g6+ Oops.
