Little Milton The Blues is Alright Guitar Lesson

Музыка

Little Milton, in addition to being a soul star with several hits, was always a serious blues guitarist. Anything he ever played is well worth listening to, but I have a special fondness for all his awesome Malaco records from the 80s and 90s. I had the good fortune to play every Sunday on the West Side of Chicago for several years in the early 90s, and the DJ, "Fast Black" at the 5105 Club on North Ave would blast Little Milton's many hits-- especially the Malaco material-- again and again between Tail Dragger's sets. It seems to me that for lots black folks of that generation, Little Milton was as famous or more famous than BB or Albert. "The Blues is Alright" is a perfect performance with some fabulous guitar. Milton's playing shows a totally individual take on the basic BB style elements. I hope that if you're not that familiar with Little Milton, this video will get you started in a rewarding direction. This tune is a great follow-up to the "Sweet Sixteen" lesson because it shows a lot of the same phrasing and melodies at a different tempo with a different feel.

black blues and soul clubs are great. If the band is good the crowd really gets into it you get a fashion show , a dance contest, comedy, and the band. Nothing like it.

Milton was one of the Sun bluesmen who recorded for Sam Phillips and who were jettisoned after Elvis. He was pretty bitter about it but went on to have a brilliant career anyway. He and BB and BB Bland were great friends.

@@JohnnyBurginBlues Both versions of Lookin For My Baby (the single version and the alternate take) have some of my favorite guitar playing ever. The alternate version in particular is just absolutely stinging.

I like THAT's WHAT LOVE WILL MAKE YOU DO from the Stax recordings best and LONG DISTANCE OPERATOR from the Bobbin label (?) Never had the chance to watch him live in person. Sometimes his guitar skills were overlooked because he was such a good singer I like your lessons Frank

"It seems to me that for lots black folks of that generation, Little Milton was as famous or more famous than BB or Albert." I really doubt that. Not more famous for sure. Proably almost as famous as the three Kings (incl. Freddie).

Naw man. Milton was huge. Not in the general blues world. But in the south and in Chicago, he was the man. Plus, chicks dug him more than any other bluesman!

@@johngdrakeguitar I am not sure what generation of black listeners you were talking about and what decade. Little Milton was not certainly bigger than BB King in the 1950s and not bigger than Albert King when Albert King was with Stax records and Little Milton with Checker. Yes, he was successfull - that is true. I do not know about Chicago in the 1990s. Maybe Little Milton who was 10 years younger than Albert & BB was more popular then. I saw BB King live in 1985 and was mildly disappointed and I saw Albert King in 1980 which was an even bigger letdown. I saw a live concert of Little Milton on tape from the 1990s and he was much better than both. I never saw him in person.
