    The concept of being essentially the practitioner of the theorist in an semi open world (huge open region) is what i liked. I remember what i saw on that show off during, i think, state of play or the game awards, and it was nothing like we were expecting. That killed my interest tbh. I hope the game is back for good this time

    The games focus seems to have shifted a lot over the years but parts of the old ideas seem to be living on a little in different characters (like the scientist) or the 2-layered map design. It feels like they're still hiding quite a bit about the game so I guess we'll see if/when it finally releases

  • @JayFFAFAlesanaES

    @JayFFAFAlesanaES

    Funny, that's one of the things which I saw as a staple premise. In the old footage you actually seem to not have the theorist accompany them at all and it looks like they upgraded it in the SoP trailer to show the scientist being looked after by the PC. It seems that he may or may not come with. What is it you mean that has changed about it? As far as open-world goes, it definitely looks more old school JRPG (FFVII or so), with a big world map and many locations to visit. I like this style, especially when it kind of reminds me of a model train track/diorama.

    @@DroolRockworm Yeah, that would be insane. It would be like a big FFXV map but you can turn into a giant person for fast travel. I think having different locations to visit (Bigger areas for combat/gathering, houses for NPC interaction, hidden areas for easter eggs/bonus weapons, optional places for fun/more exploration) is awesome. That's the old JRPG formula and always worked very IMO.

    I don't think it would actually be any good with the fully detailed world. We don't need another Skyrim, we need something done differently from a smaller team. That doesn't mean you can't have a TON of these locales. You could have temporary locales that appear when an event occurs, such as finding a secret hut in the woods or the deer ramming unethically into your car. Interestingly, this would feel a bit like a Fallout 1/2 world map with its hidden locations and random encounters that vanish after use.

    It is very clearly smaller POI environmental stages traversed between via the overworld map. I wouldn't expect that entire map the be playable at all. These playable stages shown in the video also seem to be substantially smaller than what had been shown in previous development videos years ago and that worries me quite a bit. We were suppose to have really cool and interesting vehicles and mounts to traverse large open spaces. As well as combat while doing so. Now we have some table top pieces.

    I'm still hyped for this game. The gameplay still seems so full of interesting ideas, and that style is still incredibly captivating. I agree that the combat seemed a bit flatter in this trailer though, but not terrible. Having backed a few Kickstarter campaigns which have been in development for very, very long times (though not this one, sadly), I've trained myself to a more zen attitude about them. When new material surfaces, I check it out. If a release date or window is announced, I don't get my hopes up. If it gets delayed, I assume it's because it isn't done yet and keep waiting. Projects like this occupy next to nothing of my brain on a day to day basis, but I'm always interested to check out any new developments. I hope it eventually comes out, and is at least close to as cool as it looks.

    I'm intrigued still, though with the scaling down of the dev team & what seems to have been Sony's exiting from the project (why else would LDI reemerge via Kickstarter & not a Sony State of Play while also sounding currently aimless with publishing...something Sony could assist with?), I'm rebooting my expectations from anticipating an ascending project that caught Sony's mighty eye - to - when or if it releases, a boutique Indie experience with cool quirky visuals yet gameplay that apparently wasn't as special enough to sustain Sony's involvement. I remember there being some sort of mentioning on LDI's early Playstation Store page of there being an Online/Co-Op feature. I hope that's true, though via the scale-down, such infrastructure is probably off the table now. Unless, it's peer-to-peer.

    I actually like the idea of melee combat becoming stickier the more enemies you engage. It's a good mechanic from TTRPGs that was represented early in 1st edition AD&D with a parting attack against fleeing enemies and bonuses to hit when attacking the flank or rear, and formalized in a very chess-like way in 3e as Attacks of Opportunity and flanking when attacking from opposite sides. DDO features a mobbing mechanic where aggroing too many monsters in the dungeon at once will reduce your movement speed, making you vulnerable. Anything that moves a player away from being a mass-murdering superhero will be met by most players with negativity, but honestly most players don't know jack shit about game design and their opinions can be regarded in a very particular light. Someone who eats a lot may know what food they like, but that does not mean they know how to make it. Cue people responding with a complaint or argument about one of the many things I just typed, acting like that says anything about the whole ;P

    I'm playing and loving FF7 Rebirth, the playable areas are sizable, bigger than what I expected. I would have been content sticking to roads and moving between set piece to set piece for that the game was. But the paradoxical thing about MODERN rpgs is that the seamless open maps they present make the world overall feel very small, being told that an entire province is as short a walk as getting across my city. And I got to thinking, that no one seems to be making worlds like FF5-9 anymore, with a detailed and diverse overworld map where you just stumble onto things. Even in the realm of adventure games, no ones making maps the likes of the original Monkey island. So seeing this game, I really hope it delivers on that spontaneity, because even with a pulled back scope what they're attempting to accomplish is a rarity these days.

    I think most likely we have an overworld with points of interest and battles/encounters in submaps, like a PSX era RPG. This game had a very polished, and crafted vibe to it. We know it's not made by a huge AAA team. I don't think it's reasonable to expect a huge seamless -to scale- overworld, because something has to give. IF the game actually releases, and does well, we might get a sequel with such a feature, much like the scope and ambitions of the Witcher series expanded with each installment. My guess would be they were caught off guard by the enthusiasm for the kickstarter and the amount of attention they were getting, panicked, decided they needed to greatly scale up the project to avoid disappointing people, and then at some point managed to settle down and hone the scope of the game back down to something that made sense.

    It's a funny one because all the marketing materials suggest it could be EITHER one of the best games ever made or pure meh, and ultimately that depends on two things: whether we're seeing genuinely large environments or very small playable and highly scripted areas of an otherwise non-interactable world, and story. A great story with a truly unique world would certainly offset the game world being small, though (see Jusant). I wish nothing but good things for the devs.

    I'm glad this game (seemingly) isn't going the way of Seasons of Heaven. A promising independent project unveiled before a console's release only to never see the light of day.
