Little Boots! Did Caligula's nickname ever piss off the Roman Emperor?

The Roman Emperor Gaius, better known as Caligula, is better known by that nickname, which translates to "Little Boots". It stems from his childhood in the Roman Army during the generalship of his father, Germanicus. After Caligula became emperor, did anyone refer to him by this nickname? If they did, how did he feel about it?

Not hard to imagine him being touchy about it!

I'd love a longer video on the psychology of Caligula and how we interpret the sources on him, knowing their biases

We are left to guess at whether the Historia Augustae is making up stuff, drawing from sources that didn't survive or both. That said, calling a ruler by his former childhood nickname in front of others is a straight mark of disrespect and being "touchy" about it is not a remarkable character trait, more a necessary reaction. The nickname might have been real but the anecdote looks like someone was building up a fictional character for further development.

More than that, he's gotta be an actual scholarly type and it shows, but there's also clearly effort put into delivering things in an interesting and succinct manner. I'd bet he's had his share of bloviating profs. That's what really makes him stand out imo, watching one of HC's videos feels like someone's (good) introductory short presentation on a topic to start a discussion at a gradschool seminar.

What a fascinating instance of a change in the way Romans referred to an emperor centuries after said emperor's death! Thank you for the video :)

Read the preparation of Claudius invasion of Britain was Caligula's so maybe he was in touch with reality. Given his childhood, Caligula's insanity may have been same symptoms as child abuse survivor who has epilepsy of today suffers. Interesting speculation.
