Lippincott Pass, Barker Ranch, Mengle Pass: Riding Motorcycles in Death Valley, Days 2/3

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Riding my Honda CRF300L Rally in Death Valley was an absolute blast. In part 2 of my Death Valley Noob Rally adventure, we tackle the Saline Valley and Lippincott Pass, visit Racetrack Playa, Teakettle Junction, and The Ubehebe Crater before hitting up the Goler Wash, Barker Ranch, and Mengle Pass the following day. I had an absolute blast riding dual sport motorcycles in Death Valley and am super grateful to ‪@BigRockMoto‬ for showing me around.
Riding motorcycles in Death Valley is an absolute blast. I highly recommend heading over to ADVRider.com and checking out details for next year's Death Valley Noob Rally!
Big thanks to ‪@SlowEddie‬ for the awesome editing work on this one!

I've ridden 45 years and have had more bikes than I can count. I have raced motocross for almost a decade when I was much younger and with that being said, I own a 300l, it can go anywhere. I'm doing the Nevada BDR on it in May and have no misgivings about it's capabilities.

The ROCKS at the lake are moved when the water collects and freezes a bit at the top, this slightly picks up the rocks from the dirt and then the wind blows the ice sheets pushing the rock.

Bought a used 300L with 600 miles on it 2 years ago for $4500. I've done literally everything to it except big bore kit. Rally tower, Yoshi, 550 perf everything, the works. Another $4500. $9000 total...still $6000 less than Big Rocks bike I'm guessing but I have Honda reliability. No giant ADV bikes or KTMs ever again at age 60.

A couple years ago I rode my Dad's old 1972 Suzuki TS400 thru the Saline valley. It ran out of gas about 50 yards from the gas station in panamint springs . Other than that it did fine. The following year I would come back to Death valley and ride mengal pass on a 1972 Honda XL250. Both bikes are far from cherry and have a lot of miles. But what a fun time camping and riding.

I wish that we had areas like that here, we kind of do... but all the land is owned and "private" mainly people either have livestock on their land so its fenced, or they hunt (or both) so everything is marked "no trespass" which really kind of sucks. The closest little bits of off road riding I have been able to find is new construction, but for some weird reason those guys call the cops on everyone. I guess I used to be a heavy equipment operator and a lot of my colleagues were old grumpy farts that don't even like anyone having fun near them.

For me the rowing machine is the best and quickest cut some weight get in shape for riding season ive found. low impact on the body and easy to pass time if you watch some shows/videos while doing it.

Lol, remember the BEST places to get to are always the most difficult. Remember over 40, weight loss in 80% diet, 20% weight training. Cardio will not burn fat. Cardio conditioning is totally separate. Love the content, keep it up!

  • @andyackerman7123

Cardio, alone, will not burn fat.* Using cardio to get your heart rate up, will help you burn fat, while weight training. I once gained 20 pounds, lost 3% body fat, and only stopped drinking soda. I did this, going to gym ONCE a week, lifting for ONE hour, Over the course of 6 months I opened with 30 mins of cardio, and I ran stairs, two at a time, between sets… I miss those days… I’m 100lbs heavier now. This will be my summer, though 😊

  • @philallen301

@andyackerman7123 cardio will not burn the fat stored on your body. I was a body builder in my 20's when diet didn't much matter except for enough protein. Got married and got to 300lbs on 5'10" frame. Changed diet a bit, increased cardio saw little change. Finally admitted to myself I didn't know it all. Paid for a coach. 1st thing they did in stopped all cardio, 2nd majorly adjust diet. And explained all the science behind these adjustments. In 9 months I was down to 175. Then, for cardio health I added in cardio. I rest at the 190 spot now, 3 years less restricted on what I eat, I like beer and sweets every now a then, less disciplined in the gym. For a lot of people cardio can actually make you hold your extra weight.

@@philallen301 yeah, I had a trainer, and he had me going no rest. To be fair, I was much younger. I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been, because I haven’t done well, taking care of myself, as a truck driver. I have to get jump started. Last time I dropped weight, as a driver, it was a ton of walking and carb watching. That worked too. I went from 260 to 211… but once I started eating carbs again, I ballooned to 300+ in 2 years. Definitely have to keep on it, to maintain it.

We have a "snowmobile park" down the street from my house but barely got 2 good days of snow and the temps were below zero this season, the park is technically open until May 1st and you would think that nobody would care if you rode your adventure bike on the trails back there, but even during snowmobile season when we had snow the entitled pedestrians will sometimes stand in your way and yell at you, and I used to stop, and try to explain to them that these Pink Ribbons on the trees indicate that this is a snowmobile Path, and if you notice the reason you can walk here is because snowmobiles have packed it down. They just couldn't wrap their heads around it, or read the signs, especially on the other side of the bridge that leads over the big Sioux river, people would think that was the area they could yell at you and put sticks in the path and whatnot. I was just riding through the park camp ground slow and quiet on my KLR and there is nobody there and some jerky old man just gave me a dirty look and signaled for me to slow down.. All the creepy old men that have small dogs carry a sidearm out in the open too, so they are particularly dangerous to confront but Snow or no Snow I am 1/2 tempted to fire up my Twin 800cc 2 stroke and go Rip through the park just to Spite him. hahaha. No, I have outgrown that stage, but good grief please put me out of my misery if I ever put on hunter orange and a side arm to go walk a small dog through the camp ground.

Great entertainment as always. I’m an old fart with too many joint replacements to keep up. Still love it though. I’m in central Idaho with miles of maintained dirt roads riding a Tiger 900. My question for you is boot break in. Just bought a pair of Tech 7 Enduros and it’s like riding in ski boots! Breaking and down shifting is a total pain in the ass but up shifting is just a crazy chore. Each shift takes a couple of tries. Any tips on break in? Do I just go after them with a sledgehammer? Maybe run over them with my truck a few times? Back in the 70s I soaked my Fullbores in a 5 gallon bucket for a while and the rode them till they dried. But these things are all plastic and I’m not sure how to proceed. Thanks

I don’t understand why people are so concerned what someone else’s bike costs and/or the cost of the upgrades. What may be “expensive” for someone could easily be “budget” for someone else, it’s all relative. Riders have different value propositions when it comes to everything related to riding. Someone may spend $$ on custom suspension because they believe it’s a safety upgrade and may bypass other things in life to prioritize their passion of riding.

Still cannot believe you chose the Honda 300 Rally over the Honda 450RL ….

@@clvrswine - the only advantage the 300 has is the price point - in all other respects the 450 is the grittier light adventure dual sport animal.

I do not want to go as fast as I could ride on that 500. I don’t want to wipe out at that speed. Can’t afford the bike not th hospital bills that would generate.

If you need an expensive and powerful bike to be fast off road your not as good as you think you are. Maybe a spicy take but I said what I said 🤣

It's not that you can't go anywhere on the CRF, it's that it's slow and isn't a ripper. It's for a certain buyer and not for most and that's ok. For some it's boring.

Rocky Horror ;-) as for your fitness or losing weight, i assure you that diet is equally if not more important - no offence but i have seen you eat and your weight issue is your food choice, stay away from saucy foods and breads and shi7 like that - just drop to a protein only diet and let the body burn the fat for energy - it is very easy after the 1st couple of days and you will be amazed how much lighter you feel allowing the body to do what it was designed for, we don't need to store fats, we should use them. - I ditched 60lb in a 4 month period by exercising and eating only protein 2 x a day (fish n eggs at 2pm, a piece of beef at 6) , i was 17.5stone and have settled at 13stone now, i am 6ft and 48 years old - you are a lot bigger than i was so your weight should fall equally as fast if not faster - just ride motorcycle, ride a bicycle and eat well - watch what happens - +ve mind allows +changes

On the death valley website it still says Saline valley road is closed. They are letting people through the bottom section? You guys rode from owens valley into death valley? That is awesome. I need to get up there. I thought that was still closed off.
