This Dirt Bike Training Was the Hardest Thing I've EVER Done on a Motorcycle

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This past weekend was the hardest thing I've ever done on a motorcycle. I signed up for the Shane Watts Dirt Wise dirt bike training because I always want to improve my skills and learning from a former world champion enduro racer seemed like a great way to do that. I was not prepared for the absolute butt kicking I was about to receive over the course of two days. I was so over my head at this off road motorcycle training.
I entered the weekend 100% sure I'd never do a stoppie, a wheelie, or ride my motorcycle over a 2 foot log and by Sunday afternoon I had done all of those things and more multiple times on my Honda CRF250F. I always recommend that people get as much off road motorcycle training as possible to increase their safety and enjoyment when riding dual sport and adventure motorcycles but I was in no way prepared for how far I was going to stretch my personal comfort zone at this training.

Props on doing the hard thing! re: Your venting at ~10 minutes - I used to road race sportbikes. The skills learned there never really directly applied to riding on the street, but getting into an exit ramp too fast, or having to brake hard because someone stops for no reason in front of you, etc. and knowing that you're really only operating at 50% of what you're capable - because you've put yourself and the bike to the test in a safe environment - is a HUGE confidence booster. So even if you never have to wheelie over any 2 ft logs in the future, every 8-12 inch log is going to feel like an absolute piece of cake. =)

As a fellow try hard that enjoys being challenged, this was so fun to watch. You demonstrated the benefit of coaching and formal education. Having a coach show their confidence in you can really help you press on in situations that you would have otherwise quit had you been on your own. None of these skills come naturally. Everyone has to start as an amateur. For me, that’s what really keeps riding exciting. Being a beginner is scary, but being intermediate is reinvigorating. Keep having fun, Ben!

It takes lots of guts to stretch your comfort zone, and I particularly liked your honesty after day one! " 45% ibuprofen and 55% caffeine" made me laugh out loud, as did your comment at the end about going into a 2-day coma! It's amazing how physically taxing riding can be. That’s how I learnt on my 1974 CB125S when I was 10 years old riding it off road. 😃 I was also riding it on a frozen river in the winter when the snow was not too thick. No studs. Just rubber and ice. Crashed like 987 times over 4-5 years. Completely destroyed the bike (which is what appears you are doing as well 😉). But I rebuilt it in 2009. I leant everything I needed to lean during those years of formative riding 37 years ago. I have had a great deal of pleasure riding a bunch of bikes including my current CBR1000RR around canyon twisties and CRF300L Rally. Never crashed on the road. It pays to learn young. Too many people just walk into the dealer at 45 and decide they are going to be motorcyclists. I sincerely believe that’s what makes motorcycling dangerous. Practice on something small at first. Preferably off road. As young as possible. No need to take classes. You’ll learn the techniques yourself. Best of luck out there people. 😃

Oh boy, this brings back memories from about 40 years ago. I didn't do any training like this, but learned on the trails. Popping the front to scramble over logs and climb river banks. Remember my first power wheelie on the road when I just bought a new 200cc enduro (110kg/240lb wet weight, 905mm/35.6" seat height, 24HP, and me at a whopping 64kg/140ld). I was on the inside lane coming to the red light and it changed to green; a twist of the throttle and I covered about 50m on one wheel. After that I figured the front wheel was only there so you had three points to park it on. 😈

Thank you for sharing and the inspiration. Signed up for my first off-road course with DC Dirtcamp in northern Virginia. Nothing crazy like this course but will hopefully work my way up in skill…in my late 40s so let’s see how it goes! Been riding almost 20 years but never in the dirt.
