@Aaron Choi He’s still a phenomenal player and can still be considered the most achieved player in the world. I think a lot of the times people begin to reconsider wether a player is still playing at a great level based on their team’s performance, which without a doubt is important; but, Football itself is a team sport. You can’t put Messi on a poor team and expect him to single-handedly lead them to the Champions League Final. At the end of the day, it’s still a team effort. To really prove wether Lionel Messi is still doing well, we would have to see how much he contributes to Barcelona. Look at the past decade and in practically almost all of the seasons, Messi is the player with the most combined goals and assists. Even check his ratings for the games he’s playing now. Most of them are in the high 9/10’s. I think it’s safe to say that Messi is still the best or one of the best footballers in the world. Decent isn’t a word that I would necessarily use.

@provoke opiopi99 I’m not sure wether you mean that Messi is not at his best now or he’s not the best now. Nevertheless, I’d beg to differ if you’re saying that Messi isn’t the best player right now. Sure, Haaland and other youngsters are beginning to dominate Football scoring countless goals every game, but replace them with Messi and put them on the current version of Barcelona. Do you think that Barcelona would be able to achieve what they are doing then? Probably not. I don’t think Ronaldo, Halland, Lewandowski or any other world-class player would be able to do what Messi has done with arguably the weakest version of Barcelona in a while. However, if you mean that Messi isn’t at his best now, then I’d agree because he’s obviously been more dominant in other seasons with the consideration that he had Neymar, Suarez, Iniesta etc.

That's true but one has gotta have the upper hand they are 2 different players with 2 different playing styles. Comparing them statistically is just absolutely ridiculous to say the least.. messis playing style is 100% based on stats or what one would call "on the ball" and people enjoy this the most I do too hes amazing il admit and ofcourse his stats are going to be superior than ronaldos. But what messi lacks he doesnt make up for it.. like his off the ball movement. His leaping, etc.... he is a ghost when off the ball useless. Ronaldos playing style is both on and off the ball he couldnt be more complete and is hated for it.. whatever talent ronaldo lacks that messi has ,he makes up for it with his off the ball movement, speed strength, leaps for offensive and defensive reasons. There are no stats for any movement off the ball. Okay for the last time ronaldo is not a poacher. It’s his intelligent runs and finding as well as creating space abilities that makes his goal seam effortless and merely tap ins. What Messi does is run into space but what Cristiano does is create space from nowhere. Just compare their stats against the best defences in the world like that of Italian sides (June or I don’t know maybe ROMA). All you have to do to contain Messi is stop his supply of the ball as perfectly displayed in Chelsea vs barca first leg. He benefits from team making mistakes in defence but he can not make the best defensive team make mistakes and which is exactly what ronaldo has done. And it’s not like ronaldo can’t dribble.we all know he did precisely that in Man U and earlier in his career but he knows himself fully so keeps evolving his role. And I can almost bet Messi wouldn’t last as long as ronaldo in terms of age

Unknown Person THANK YOU! Messi plays the game more. He uses quick foot skills to get by 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and even 9 defenders! Messi being a midfielder also controls the entire game. Without a good midfield, you cannot control the game. Messi sets up his players to score with beautiful passes and it just goes to show how Messi really understands the game. Ronaldo is known for scoring (even though it is statistically proved that Messi scores more), while Messi is known for being an overall player. He’s not just known for goals, he’s also known for assists, foot skills, speed, passes, and his amazing placement. That is why I value Messi to be a much more valuable player. Ronaldo can only finish, but Messi can do so much more.
