I’m just going to pretend that I don’t want any of those pedals. I’m switching myself to see as a third person and and talking to him “I know you feel distracted and tempted by new rectangular boxes with knobs but I also know you’ve worked hard to own the other rectangular boxes with knobs that you acquired the other days. So I know you’ve the strength to overcome this predicament too.” Nowadays I’ve been repeating this every time I see those green boxes.

I used to have a Roland RE-201. That thing was in MINT condition. It was if it had just rolled off the floor of the Roland factory in Japan. It was unbelievable. I did replace the tape at one point on my own, somehow. Playing that through my vintage Fender Twin Reverb was so good. I miss both of those two pieces of equipment quite a bit. I have since purchased the RE-20 and it mimics the sound pretty well. I REALLY want to try that Boss RE-202. I love that it looks like a Boss CE-1 which I also used to have two of. I had a lot of vintage gear. I miss it all. Lovely video, Rhett!

Nice video. I had a 201, 301, 501 and 555 back in the late 70s/80s. It's a pity you're not running into the front end of the amp. Space Echoes and Echoplexes were designed that way. I don't think these quite get there, but they're funky. Now I have a few Echoplexes and happiest with the Catalinbread BED. Also I couldn't get my DL4 close enough to my Echoplexes or DMM so it went!

Both of the Boss Space Echos are my favorite here. Line 6 just doesn’t come close imo to the sounds of Boss even though the Line 6 can do so many more delays types.. and to be honest I just have never liked the Line 6 DL4… Strymon sounds better than the Line 6 but it is still missing some of the magic that both of the Boss pedals have. I must get the Boss, it’s just matter of which one of the two 🤷🏽‍♂️😁

For me space-saving is key and I go for compact models. I recommend the Digitech Obscura which is mid-budget and has an huge array of features, including superb tape emulation. I have a Dunlop Echoplex which I'm just getting to know - already loving its worn-out tape setting. My Ibanez Soundtank is nearly 30 years old, although it sounds a tad weak and has limited features compared to today's units. Tape emulation in compact delay pedals wasn't a thing back then.

seems like the space echo has a bit more low end thump than that volante, which is a bit more hifi. How does this translate in a mix? I'm considering trading in the volante for the space echo. I noticed the boss has true stereo as well, whereas the Strymon stuff generally has emulated stereo in the wet signal. But, the Strymon has a true bypass option, and I've been burned before with boss buffered bypass, which isn't switchable to true bypass. End of the day, you gotta go with what sounds better and is more inspiring, which is why I'm contemplating the boss.

He has the Eventide TimeFactor, the Line 6 DL4 MkII, the Boss Space Echo, the Strymon Timeline and a EHX Memory Man 1100-TT. Those are all his "high end" stuff. On another board he has the normal pedals like the Carbon Copy, the DD3, the Echoplex, etc. All of them on his high end board are just fantastic. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Having the Helix has taken me out of the pedal rat race, but I still enjoy them.

Its interesting to me all of these pedals have all of these crazy effects.. I often wonder who uses these in a live performance - or what the need for them is. I find that all that is typically used are a few "normal" delays and reverbs. For me the Line6 is a winner because of the price, the sound quality, and the MIDI functionality and being able to store a lot of presets. To be able to save presets for every track and use a switcher to control it is awesome. I know the Strymon and Boss can as well - but for $100-200 more.

I have an RE-201 in pretty great condition that I got shortly before this new round of Roland pedals came out. I got the RE-202 in the hopes that it would sound just as good so that I could sell the 201 and save some money. Trying them side by side, they are almost indistinguishable, except for a couple of key things: First, to me, the saturation sounds quite different on the two units. Neither is better in my opinion, they're just different. And actually, the fact that you can dial in how much you want on the 202 probably makes it an overall advantage. Second is that the self-oscillation on the RE-202 just....doesn't have the depth and clarity and overall magic that the RE-201 does. The 202's feedback kind of just distorts and converges around a specific tone more tightly, whereas the 201's feedback, while it can definitely produce distinguishable tones, seems to remain more spread out across the frequency spectrum, and all the imperfections of tape sort of get magnified as the layers of sound stack on top of themselves. s someone who likes to crank the feedback up a lot, this was a dealbreaker for me. Still, I think they did a great job on the pedal. It looks great, feels really nice to use, and is about 100 times as convenient and more portable, and probably 10 times as reliable, while being about 1/5 the price. As an all-rounder, the DL4 gets my vote. I get that the HX stuff has the same things but the interface on this is a lore more appealing to me.

I use old DL4 mainly as a looper. No other loopers on the market have topped og DL4 in my opinion. TCElectronic, EHX, Akai, Boss, none of them have the same functionality as DL4 looper with the half speed/reverse and retriggering options. They come close, but its not the same. Other loopers can't do what the DL4 does. (Check out recent Dave Knudson vid on DL4 and you'll see what i mean.) Can't wait for the new one!

  • @kennywowie

    @kennywowie

    Жыл бұрын

beware, if it's not too late, as far as I can tell, there's no way on the new DL4 to adjust the looper to defuse ( don't how else to put it) the way the old DL does, in other words, I LOVE that the older loops get replaced by the newer ones. I use that ALL the time. I don't like using static loops that just stack parts though it has its use. Other pedals allow you adjust this, like the E. Harmonix 22500 or the worthless piece of junk that was the Ditto 4x, which to its credit allowed a simple turn of a knob to adjust the corrosion level of a loop, brilliant. Too bad the pedal was junk and glitched and died soon after warranty ran out. anyways, the new DL4 looper won't diffuse and that maddens me that Line 6 doesn't mention this particular change in the literature, as if it's not important. Makes me crazy. Don't put out a pedal that claims to be the same ( but BETTER) pedal. Spent so much energy hyping all the new stuff that they forgot to mention they trashed a feature that I loved most. AND, I've yet to figure out how to access the reverbs on the new one. No manual, no intuitive solution, and a cryptic quasi-instruction on the little picture card. Maddening. Sounds great.

I saw Josh using the DL4 MkII on the JHS show and thought it was a vintage unit! I guess I didn't look very closely. I'd have the RE-202 if I was going for one of these - I don't see a reason to go for the RE-2 - less is less. But, in the end, I'm not going to buy any of these, and that makes me sad.

The HX Effects is massive, wouldn’t fit on my board, & a nonstarter. Tried the HX Stomp & found it to be one of the least intuitive & user friendly devices I’ve used. I don’t care about 99% of what’s in it & have no intention of working that hard to access the things I do. The DL4 MKII is considerably cheaper & has everything I need at my fingertips, including the looper I love. No extra switches, midi, or an even more expensive XL model required, to do the things I want to do. The 202 does variations of 1 thing. The DL4 MKII is considerably more versatile. I’m not buying a 202 just because it looks cool. It’s an easy decision for me, but to each their own.

OMG I totally agree on the Stomp. I would just look at it and think “I have no idea where that setting is” after weeks of tweaking LOL. Ya gone!

If Anheuser-Busch ever get their act together again they should get Rhett to do some Bud Light adverts for them. You know that would work. But only if there's no creepy guy on the beer can stuff again. Rhett could do the whole advert on his own. Film it. Score it. Star in it. You know why that would work from watching his channel. Maybe get the Strymon Deco in with the RE202 for that?

Boss all the way. The 202 actually has 5 different reverbs (spring, plate, room, etc.). You have to hold Tap when you plug it and select the reverb you want from the presets.

With that comment are you implying most boss pedals arent musical? And if so, why do you say that?

@@strazburg Over the years have owned a fair few Boss Pedals. And generally my opinion of most, is they are an Affect rather than an Effect. Sort of the best way to describe pedals and units from Boss/Roland. There has always been that certain something that is taken away from the quality of the instrument, that something that is lost. And what a great many Boss pedals tend to do to the guitar signal. Dare say, that in this case because certainly with the 202 it is achieving the classic unit it harks after, they have been able to attain what initially brought many to consider Boss “the industry standard”. As I say have owned a number of Boss pedals and units over the years. Each of which no longer own. Think there is only one pedal that sold that would have kept. Ultimately though experience has also taught me that there is a reason certain classic bits of kit that enter musical mythology. And why certain items are so sort after.

If Boss had included emulations and features from the 301 and 501/555, then it’d be a no brainer. So the Volante makes more sense with the extra features unless you specifically require the sound of a 201. I don’t think Line6 updated the original emulations in anyway, some colour the dry signal so disappointed to not see that updated. So no, not the best modern delays, just welcome updates for people into the OG DL4 and RE20, but nothing to convince detractors otherwise.

I would buy the Boss over the Line6 simply because I know the Boss will be reliable on tour. Ive had countless Line6 devices shit the bed on tour over the years. I wont buy another Line 6 product. Boss on the other hand Ive owned a ton of and still do and Ive never had an issue. Some of my Boss pedals ive owned for over 20 years.

I don’t get to play enough! These toys would be REALLY fun, but I don’t even get play with the ones I have. Any one of the three big ones would be great. Stand outs are the Volante, and 202.
