Lightspace Venus RGB 22W Show Laser Repair Major Electrical Fault!

Ғылым және технология

In for repair is one of the most burned up show lasers I have seen come across my desk. This unit needed the whole galvo scanner system and low voltage signal wires replaced due to a major electrical fault. This is one repair you're thankful not to have smell-o-vision!

    High current source finding it's way to ground where it shouldn't is always fun. Everything is a toaster oven if you put enough current through it. Pick up a bag of mx1.25 5p connectors though, saves you from having to scavenge other stuff that's "probably still good" ;)

    What a bizarre situation. At first I was thinking maybe some super high-powered stage lighting was nestled too close to the back. Turning it into an oven.... the more densely wrapped wires touching each other and other things in the enclosure..... Allowed it to build up heat on those surfaces.. Because I saw more melting on the external surfaces of the connectors than i did on the inside pin/contacts. Like instead of the heat coming from the actual wire and connectors.....almost like someone held a heat gun or blowtorch over it. The outer surfaces look discolored and crusty more so. Usually something like that will heat the pins/ contacts inside the conectors.... and start to deform them on the inside to where they just want to pull apart. Or slide out of the little push connector sleeve. But in this case it looks mainly affected on the outside surfaces. Like it's burnt/singed and heat look to be more on the outer crusty surfaces of the connectors. Such a weird failure for sure

    damm never seen that happen to a laser before i see the hotglue was also on sale at time of manufacture lol

    Wow. Fuses should have prevented this from ever happening. Any idea what started this destruction? I would think some high power circuit used the low voltage wiring as a ground return.

    These Meanwell PSU RSP serie are prettu powerfull and can deliver insane stable high current output. I see it was replaced already so look like there was a bad ground connection and the ground took another path and burned all these wires that normally cary smaller current... in other words, a bad psu ground connection modified the current share along the various pcbs and have bragn a diffrent smaller path than it was designed for? i guess?

    The main 24v PSUs end up failing most of the time because these lasers get shipped very often and the large filter inductor breaks off. There was no sign of a short along that path, only from the galvo PSUs to the signal data. The RSP PSUs are built very well, certainly not on the low end of quality. I think they price out around $250, but they perform well!

    Nice job. Im amazed that board would draw all that current, what's on the board that could do that? all looks like low current stuff

    My best guess would be that one of the galvo PSUs had some short or breakdown of insulation which could of connected one of the power rails to signal ground through the case. I think this because of galvo common being +24V against ground where the new one I installed is actual common ground. I am betting water wicked into the original PSU's transformer somehow on the low side/secondary. That's my best guess as to the fault, but it was somewhere between the galvo PSUs and signal ground and it took out darn near all the data grounds. I wish I was there to see the fault happen.

    hey Patrick merry christmas and happy newyear i hope 2024 will be a awesome year for you quick question would you know a source for a 1 watt full diode module with fairly decent beam quality and a cheap ilda controller somewhere ?

    Are you just looking for a 1W laser module? Honestly most of 1W blues are pretty ok, even if they are from ebay. They tend to use the 1.25 W A140 which has pretty good divergence. The 1.4W 465/462nmnm laser diode is also pretty good and is brighter than 445/450nm. Both can easily be found on eBay. A cheap ILDA controller, like DAC? I have always sworn by my Pangolin FB3. There are other options like EitherDream but I haven't priced out any other DACs. There is also Ishow, but ~ quivers ~ it's probably the cheapest best.Moncha Box is also worth a look at.

    A what board? Monsa? "60lb beast" ah, you've met my ex! Was this previously fixed before sending to you, or they couldn't complete it so sent it to you? Might be something else very wrong with the unit to fail in the space of 3 months of having a whole new power supply being put in You said the supply was bridged by a yellow wire, that magically turned to black, did I miss something there 🙈 Don't think I'd seen white heat shrink before, will you keep those old power supplies or would you not trust them thanks too having been shorted? Are most of these units black because it looks better or because it absorbs heat slightly better than if they were white... Or are they black because it cuts down on light reflections 🙈 Sorry I ask lots of things, if you've gone to the trouble to make something for youtube, the least I can do is engage 😅

    Yes it's possible. Any Laser that isn't between 800-400nm is pretty invisible to the human eye.

    will a laser system run almost forever if it is underclocked?

  • @Zenodilodon

    @Zenodilodon

    4 ай бұрын

    It will get significantly longer run time. It's suggested to only do about 85% on the galvos. The Laser diodes themselves often fail during power up cycles, running them at 90% helps long term wear though.

    Why do you use such cheap thermal compound in a expensive laser? HY410 has a horrible thermal conductivity there are literally 10x more thermally conductive pastes out there (not even liquid metal, normal paste and for a reasonable price)

  • @Zenodilodon

    @Zenodilodon

    The glavo amps really don't get all that warm honestly so I use generic thermal paste for them. The things that get the hottest are actually the laser heads themselves as hey have multiple 50mm TECs in them.

  • @GermanMythbuster

    @GermanMythbuster

    Yeah of cause the Laser diodes and TECs get much hotter. I only had a cheap-ish laser and the Galvo drivers got quite toasty, I assumed this was the same with all of them.
