Fretlight 200 Series Review: • Master Guitar! | 1990s...
I was reached out to by the Fret Zealot company (as were other Guitar KZread Channels) to do a review of their product. In exchange for doing this, I would get a free Fret Zealot sent to me (a $200 value.) Seeing as I was already interested in this product, I thought I would give it a try. When I was finished filming this, I ended up just throwing it away though as I was frustrated with trying to fix it.
The Fret Zealot is a 'good' product. However, it is not quite as easy to install as they'd like to advertise it as. It is unforgiving if you mess up as it doesn't really leave room for any "do-overs." It is easy to rip the LED strips off from the system so please be careful with them if you have to remove it. The adhesive also doesn't really work well if installed a '2nd' time. It would not be possible to move this to a 2nd guitar if you decided to buy a new guitar. Also, the long term effects of having this mounted to a nitro finished guitar could result to some discoloration to the finish - especially with the capo mount for the battery.
A lot of the issues I had were user error though so you can't really judge the product based on that. If install properly, the app does work really well with the product to help teach you MILLIONS of songs (they do have a great selection,) scales and chords. My only complaint is when learning songs, it is a standard midi-keyboard recording which doesn't sound the same as what your guitar will sound like. Personally, I find these 'light-up' learning systems best suited for learning the basics before you move on to professional lessons.
My favorite feature is the 'fun' mode. It allows for crazy light shows that resemble sparklers, rainbows and sporadic flashes. This is a great novelty trick and worth half the asking price as a stage prop.
$200 is a little expensive for something so fragile - if they could sell these in the $50-$100 range - this would become the next big thing. This is very similar to the FretLight guitars and at this point in time, I would still prefer them - however, the Fret Zealot is in its infancy and I look forward to how they can improve the product.

The Fret Zealot is a cool learning tool. If installed properly the first time and just left alone, I'm sure it would do exactly what it was advertised to do. However, I'm not the only one to break it while installing it. It's fairly new so hopefully they will work on its durability in future generations. I was impressed with the amount of songs available to learn spreading tons of different genres. amzn.to/2Laq2ks

The Trogly's Guitar Show - I think it's s cool idea + I know enough from being a car painter putting on stripe packages , adhesive stuff will drive you crazy. Adhesive stuff is fragile + most of us don't follow included directions with anything ' we glance at them . It'll improve they gotta put some kind of fake non working one you put on first / remove + put the lighted one on. A practice install.

What I learned from this video: follow directions. I'm actually glad you didn't follow them Trog. I constantly work with people that don't follow directions and screw up simple things like assembling an awning. Yes I'm an old (50) grumpy man that is constantly telling my younger (30-35) coworkers to follow directions. I remember being young and not reading directions, I am grumpy, I need bran in my diet and now it's time for a nap. Great video. Love your show.

@@hortyist1 all you need to do is ask us :-). The adhesive is 3M 468MP double-sided tape. No chemical reaction like superglue, so if your neck is high quality and not already damaged, there will be no effect on it whatsoever. The LED strip technically protects your neck, so if your guitar gets exposed to sun, the rest of the fretboard may fade a little just as an example. TL;DR - high quality fretboard is best and the adhesive is tape 👍

It was a pretty crazy design process, but believe it or not, using a capo (it's a real metal capo) as the battery holder is the best solution to make sure you can clip the battery to any head stock and don't have to permanently stick it on there.

I have purchased two fret lights a number of years apart and was disappointed in both mostly due to the software, the guitar was fine. Even though it’s been 7-8 years since I’ve even tried the fret light I purchased the fret zealot guitar ... yes you can get a nice guitar with it already installed. This to me is the way to go. I actually build my own guitars and I think this was the proper call for this. The company made it very clear to me that the product is a one time use deal. Do not take it on and off!!!!! I love the different colored lights so you can determine root 3rd 4th 5 th etc. That was one of the things that I always thought fretlught should have done. I enjoyed the fret zealot so much that I purchased one for my nephew who has showed an interest in playing. I like that it integrates with the spark app which is a great way to learn songs . I wish this was available all those years ago when I bought my fretlight . This is in my opinion far superior technology that the wired fretlight that I have from a number of years ago. Fretlight , I think, is now wireless and I should go online and see if the app is different, but I really like this. Great for any level player and can help with creativity!

Great job at getting to the point where you can receive items from companies. Saw a video of this the other day, doesn't seem all that much useful, especially for some $200. You could get nice lessons for a bit for that much money. If I were a beginner, I don't believe this is that useful. Those are just my thoughts. Nice video either way.

The 25.5 fitted perfectly up behind. the frets. Regarding breaking mine did not and has been tryed on 2 guitars of mine. The guitar I tryed it on was a yamaha electric and a crafter semi acoustic. It fitted but once you get past 4th fret it left small gaps which I did not like. The second one I put on not only looks good but plays OK as well and the application is very good and informative. My conclusion is I'm happy with it. It

Those strips are very weak compared to the Force restraining it. To avoid tear outs, I would not take the hole tape cover off at once. I would install one by one and peeling as I go down the frets. That will give a better chance to get the strips right the first time. Now for removing the hole system, I would rather peel the strips from the tips, not the back bone. From there I’ll do the reverse installing procedure and you would be good to go. Whether is a sharp angle on a structure it causes that weak joint, is prone to crack or rip off from there.

As a novice picking up the guitar once again , 25 years after the first time, I must admit I was inspired to try once more before I “kick it” after seeing this product in a number of other review videos. The emergency nature of my work has kept me from committing to scheduled lessons on a regular basis, but having an “AI” teacher to learn from at 2:00 a.m. with interspersed lessons from an actual human teacher might just keep me going. I purchased one and received my “Fretz-Alot” last week. (WTF is up with these guys and their pronunciation? In another video the presenter calls it “Fret Zee-lut” - I chalked it up to his accent but was so distracted by his repeated use of “Zee-lut” I just had to quit watching.. I’m still trying to decide on which guitar to install this product, since it does appear to be a permanent fixture once the adhesive tape has had time to cure. It can’t be a cheap guitar because I’m a novice and I need something that won’t frustrate me so much I just quit again. On the other hand, I’m a novice and wouldn’t choose too nice a guitar unless I couldn’t walk through the house without stepping on one. I think I’ll go back down to the local guitar “big box” and discuss the issue again. Nobody there had heard of the “Zee-lut/fretz-alot” yet, so now I can take the product along and at least let them visualize what I’m thinking of doing. Maybe I’ll buy a cheaper and a more expensive guitar and install the Fret Zealot on both.....but that could get expensive for an avocation I might not keep up, like before. That is, unless the Fret Zealot truly makes learning and playing guitar much more enjoyable for novices. I really hope it does as advertised, help me to achieve this goal. Such a device was not available the last time I tried! As regards this hapless reviewer, I knew he was done for when he called the processor bracket a capo, then proceeded to strip off ALL of the adhesive backing before really checking the fit. I am quite fortunate that his was not the first video I saw. There is no way I would have purchased the Fret Zealot if that was the review I had to base my decision upon! Actually the first installation video I saw was on the Fret Zealot website. The directions were quite explicit, the lighting and video very clearly demonstrated what should and should not be done, and why. If the above was my video review of this $200 product, I would not have been so irresponsible as to have posted it publicly. It was clear that the reviewer did not read the installation instructions, and he admitted as much. So why do a young company the disservice of posting it publicly? There may be some issues that need work, but this video does not help to resolve any possible manufacturing areas that require strengthening due to the simian nature of the installation. I must agree with TIMExBANDIT’s comment above. It is not that this review did not help the company, but the fact that it did not help those of us who might be considering whether or not to spend our hard-earned money on this new product. Which brings us yet again back to that timeless conundrum: Just because one has the use of a video recording device and a KZread account, should the two necessarily be combined? In all seriousness, before I came across these “lesser” reviews of Fret Zealot, I’d seriously considered recording and posting review(s) of installation and “ease of use” on a more expensive / longer - necked guitar vs. a less expensive / shorter-necked guitar. Since I’m a novice guitarist and novice video editor it seemed like it might be helpful for those who, like me, might’ve thought about picking up guitar for the first or second time. But then some smartass would likely come along and make fun of the way I pronounced Zealot, or say the subject matter was not centered in the field of view ;-)

I think I am Psychicly linked to you Austin, I guess we need a break lol! "I don't like it going on the headstock" - then you say it. "That top edge looks uncomfortable" then you say it. " You have to peel all that tape off then apply it?" then you do - we both were wrong, lol! - Anyway, I could definitely see the advantages of this, or a similar product, for newbies and it would help me with scales and those oddball chords only the show offs have memorized. As for the actual playing a song part, I think it would get annoying with all those lights on. $200!! No, I mean the technology is good but not at that price. One thing that you didn't mention is that the problem with something like this for newbies would be that it sort of teaches them to stare at the fretboard all the time. Im not one of those die hard " don't ever look at your guitar" type guys. Good review and yes you are indeed a typical guy - "directions? who needs those"... fast forward a few minutes..oh hmm guess I should have checked the directions, lol. I worry about putting it on a nice guitar but I bet with a neck like the maple fret board of a typical Fender it wouldn't leave any of that residue.

Nice review as usual. I'd pass on this and find a decent Fretlight guitar on the used market. A friend had a Fretlight and it was a nice learning tool. Since the Zealot is not reusable, once its stuck down, you can't move it to another guitar. Horrible idea that you can't remove it and reuse it. It looks far more fragile than my ambient lights I bought for behind my TV off Amazon for $12. If they could make the light strips cheap so you could easily replace that part they may sell these. As is, not worth the money in my opinion. Rock on bro.

I bought the Fret Zealot LED Learning system installed from Fret Zealot on a beautiful Yamaha (inexpensive guitar). The guitar is great. The Fret Zealot is just a device that I cannot deal with. As It is cumbersome, and has not really taught me anything yet. The lights are too bright to look at, the application has a lot of faults, and it sounds, as a cheap keyboard (try playing BB King like that). It did not come with the black glasses. Also, I bought the guitar from Fret Zealot so that FRET ZEALOT would PROFESSIONALLY install it. I was thinking that they were going to do a good job, as this was done in the factory, but I was surprised, the installation looks really bad. The tape is not properly placed on the top of the fret board, so it does not contact the wood, and the dots from the Fret Zealot do not match the guitars dots on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 12th, fret. The worst is the fact that is really not a teaching device, and the fact that they sell it as if it was is deceiving. It is very expensive, this device to me is not worth more than $50.00, and that is because it is an electronic flashy toy.

Lol well Dash old boy did you know that on one particular Japanese game show the contest is for you to sing along with your favorite song? Yup, you stand there and sing along with it. If you finish the song , you win! If you cannot finish it, you lose. So, what is the "sport " of it? Well while you are standing there singing, a beautiful young Japanese girl is umm, using her hand on your happy place! Ankther game is quite simple, you stand behind a table that has a cloth on it draping to the floor. The audience only sees you from your stomach up.. while you are standing there you are receiving some oral gratification. What's the goal? You have to not climax while this is going on. The other person, who the audience can only see the feet of while they are umm "performing " is doing their best to cause you to lose by climaxing... oh the catch? A straight guy is standing while it's a gay guy on his knees!! Yuckkkk.... the beautiful Japanese girl you initially see though is standing behind a board divided up. A group of men ate tossing like bean bags at the board hitting segments causing them to break away revealing this beautiful young, and naked, girl . Lol.. they have some very perverted and sexually intriguing games over there!

It's more like a $20 thing than a $200 thing...the money is for the stuff you can do with the phone/library of songs, learning materials etc...It would be better, in my opinion, as something that was $20 and had 4 or 5 levels of scales and chords built into it with 10 songs and you choose which one of the 4 or 5 levels you buy based on your level when you start and where you are as you progress and wear them out, with no apps or heavy deals hanging off the headstock. I'm sure that they can get that much memory available without anything bulky and let's be honest, How long would they last anyway?

yea it seems helpful but its 200$ and not reusable? thats a lot...for something not reusable i would rather pay no more than 80-100. but if it was reusuable and not so fragile id pay more for something like that but 200 is a lot. good vid man, i saw philip mcknight make a review as well. similar criticism to you i think in some ways

Strangely, current Gibson doesn't seem to like me that much. Maybe if we get new ownership in and my channel continues to grow things like that can happen. Once I hit 20k subscribers, I think I'll reach back out to Sweetwater to see if they would let me borrow guitars for the purpose of review. Only problem with that is they don't seem to get the 'cool' ones in any more. The 2018 LE Line up had some great ones in it!

I had never seen nor heard of that word before this product. Pronounced incorrectly (frets-a-lot), it sounds like a fun guitar product that will make me into a highly skilled Guitar-Playing Knight. Pronounced correctly... honestly, I probably wouldn't even have taken the free product sample for review - the "name" was a huge 'selling' point to me
