    I actually bought it last year. It has made a huge impact on my riff and melody making. The notes and scales is like he states, what’s making this worth it for me. You can instantly seek out of your standard and comfortable intervals and create something that you normally wouldn’t do. If you’re a guitar god who knows all modes and stuff, you probably don’t need it though. But it’s a cool thing.

    The Fretlight guitar came out decades ago with built in LEDs (red only) that could outline scales selected by a rotary switch switch. Of course, there were no mobile phones back then. This product is cool because you can add the feature to your own guitar, and the app adds the song instruction capability along with a versatile interface. Considering the money I spent on instruction books and video tapes back in the day, I think $200 in 2023 is a fair price. And I imagine new songs could be added (or corrected) over time, for playing in every imaginable alternate tuning.

    Interesting system. There are two questions which leap to mind. The first is whether the power supply at the headstock end messes up the weight balance of the guitar? Perhaps more important, I'm wondering if removing the fret zealot would leave marks or other damage on the neck?

  • @onerandombruh

    @onerandombruh

    Actually the only problem with removing that thing is it could leave some traces of glue that can easily be cleaned with some lemon oil... Other than that, there's not that much of known issues related to using fret zealot.

  • @MashaT22

    @MashaT22

    I can answer. It doesn’t leave marks. It also doesn’t have to be mounted on the headstock. You can attach it anywhere on the body with various methods. I even saw someone who installed one into his sound hole and another in an f hole. I think the company gives you a way to stick it to the back of the guitar if you like. The app is really great actually. It has lots of content for players of all levels. I don’t think you even need to own the hardware to subscribe for the lesson content - or it was that way for a long time. I haven’t looked recently.

    This would be great for a beginner. Especially, if it has the option to show you every chord, scale, whatevs in every tuning you might be in (drop, double drop, open, dadgad, etc.), that would make this an amazing learning tool. But for 200? Who would buy this? Not a beginner, that is for sure. Make this into a windows or apple program, would be more relevant, more long lasting and upgradeable. This way... no. Led strips can break, tear, etc. Glue could lose it's strenght. So... no. Software version? Absolutely. This way? No. I could absolutely use it, but... no. Maybe if you build a full guitar with this system built in, as a practice tool, not a 'true guitar". That would be very good as a learning/teaching tool. But that would also be out of budget for most beginners.

    You can often find them for sale for much less, both new and used. Also, like many others, you’re missing the point. Fret Zealot is not a gamified approach. Ola didn’t look at the lesson content or else he wouldn’t have compared it to Rocksmith. It really teaches you with actual teachers and has content that’s relevant for all players - I don’t even think you have to own the hardware sign up for the content. The point is that it’s better to look more at your guitar and not rely on a game. Their app has video content of teachers actually teaching, and FZ is used as a visual practice aide to help learn chords, scales, and memorize songs beyond lessons. If you look at their demos, you’ll get it - and start to see it can benefit players of all levels rather than just beginners. The hardware is more robust that you’d think too. I had one at one time. It won’t tear the way you’d think. The company is really good about helping if something really does go wrong.

    How could the direct competitor NOT be Fretlight. They be doing built-in LED's on thier own guitars (acoustic, Tele, Strat, and "metal-ish" model, for over a decade. They have software for scales, modes, chords, songs, & various albums for it, like Nirvana, Beatles, Sabbath, Santana, etc. I took one, added the actual fret note strips to it, lacquered over that, so now the LeD's light up, and you can see the actual note names on the lite frets.
