LIGHT a Refleks Diesel Stove on your narrowboat (and other HOT tips)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

After installing our Refleks Diesel Stove on our narrowboat we received some questions about how to light the stove. Is it hard? There is a lot of misconception online about how 'tricky' these stoves are to light. So we are sharing our FIRST ever attempt at lighting Maybel.
While we are at it we thought we'd answer some of your questions about the chimney, blow back and ventilation.

Any heater that vents out of the boat will produce a "dry heat" its gas hobs and the like that produce water in the air that can ad to condensation, along with cooking of course. Some kind of heat exchange ventilation could allow you to move more air, not lose heat and reduce condensation.

Hi girls love the vlog.We have had a diesel stove on our narrow boat for over 20 years now and can’t fault it it’s brilliant on every level. One thing to say is obviously meths is extremely flammable, you can only use it when the stove is stone cold or vaporises and will ignite instantly, taking your eye brows off as i can confirm. I found a small piece of fire lighter , lit and dropped in is far safer.Got rid of need for hair removing meths!!

me & my wife been enjoying your videos, y'all are a riot, love it, anyway let me see if I can give you idea to extract more heat, first I would use a few more fans, I get 10-12 hours out of my battery pack to run 1 USB fan. I would try 2-3 in your primary area, with 1-2 more to push it farther away. towards bedroom. now for the diesel heater, dont do this without securing it while moving, however should be ok while stationary, this will sound weird, but very effective, the metal wood stove pipe. 6" that come off back of wood heaters, or stoves, get 3-4 sections, but do not lock them together, just stack 1 over the other, staggering the open section on each one, now, use pieces of "bailing wire" or coat hanger, to tighten the pipes loosely together, so they can be lifted off & on, now place it on top of heater, you may need a metal pie pan? then on top I place a pie pan on the top, the heat builds up & the pipes radiate a lot more heat, plus a fan helps heat my whole house, I use a portable kerosene heater, I tried this over a decade ago, & worked on it & yes it heats my whole house, provided I leave doors open, the bathroom or bedroom will cool off if close the door, but I do have electric heaters to use if needed, but that will work well, & all I do is move air from room to room with fans.

I.v got the smallest heater refleks diesel do (66mk) with cooking plate. It was a replacement for a larger model on my 12m fishing boat I work on out of Newlyn in cornwall.I had the top guard ring alterd to take a large kettle snugly,it will easily get hot enough to fry on if you want! when it comes to lighting i just turn on fuel wait till i can see it seep into the burner pot, light the chunk of fire lighter I,ve speared with a length of wire and gently insert chunk into the bottom of the burner and replace top.I have never used meths, I dont carry it, the fire lighter method works very well and completely burns away.It never smells of Diesel unless its gone out (usually due to poor weather and time to go in!!!) I leave it on all winter to keep electronics n bunks dry one word BLISS! I am a big fan especially when your sailing in the early hours, you open the wheelhouse door and its toasty.....the flue runs up the corner of the wheelhouse from the cabin below and its lovely to rest your back against it! It aint called cozy corner for nothing!!!!lol. i highly recomend them the previous one lasted 30 years, testament enough i would say

Great video and very informative. Pleased that you can cook on the new fire and thanks for showing the chimney on the outside / roof of the boat. It is good that the chimey can be made to a smaller size, if need be. I prefer the diesel heater to a multifuel stove as the diesel heater is alot cleaner, no need to clean out the stove after use, to remove all of the burn't ash and no need to have the hassle of getting and storing logs and coal.

When I lived on my boat with the same brand of stove I was shown how to light it with small bbq style firefighters. Not on the boat anymore but I recall dropping in the firefighter and then throwing in a couple of 🔥 matches. Interesting video, answered lots of questions I had. I admit I am biased against diesel because of how smelly and noxious diesel cars are, so I would always be concerned about diesel fumes inside the boat. Plus using meths and chucking a match at it puts me off. My Dad liked to see a stove lit for cold evenings. Our system was to light the stove 2 hours before we planned to stop and open all the windows in the hope that it had died down enough for the interior to be bearable and not roasting. (A metal box, with a heat source is basically the same as an oven).

There are several chimney cap designs (for boats with marine diesel stoves) that are aimed at reducing back-draft from windy conditions. When I lived on a houseboat, a number of boaters liked the "H" shaped chimney cap. Some liked the "wind-vane" style. If back-draft becomes and issue, something to investigate.

Hello dear hearts. Thanks. You got the Sunday morning feeling just right. You boat is way too clean. I worry. Webasto produce a dry heat too. Any heater that does not put water into the space it is heating is a dry heater. Like how the tiles are reflected in the reflex. Today is deep sorrow day for me. I have had to sell Mrs Mouse and, maybe, my Porsche' too. Loads of good sensible reasons, still recoving from my cancer and need checking up on, lots of friends and my wife are seriously ill and need support, had a foreign friend who had to go to hospital and had no insurance, so I'm broke. Thanks for sharing all of the info, although I'm sorry the situation even came up where it was cold enough in the boat you had to have the scarf and headbands back on before lighting the stove! As always, great to see you two doing well :)

I had a central heating water jacketed wood furnace with circulating baseboard heat hooked in tandem with my oil furnace. Great when I was young. I really enjoyed splitting oak. But where I lived I went through about 7 cords a year. Eventually I got really tired of emptying the ashes... :)

@@sleepy314 I only do about 3 cords a year. LOVE the heat and the low cost, but there's a lot of time and labor involved. Pellet stove requires power, which can be problematic here, but a gravity fed diesel stove, on the other hand............

Great video very informative looks like a good heater and easy to use once you get used to it. A lot cleaner than your other fire and no coal and logs to lug around. You could do with one of those long gas lighters to light the meths just lower it down the fire and light it. As throwing the match down isn't ideal as the charcoal from the match will block the holes in the jets over time where the diesel comes in then it won't burn proper and you don't want that. Something like this just google Refillable-Plastic-Kitchen-Lighters the one's you put gas in and give you a flame should be much easier than a match hope this helps. Stay safe and warm and see you in the next.

We think your new stove is wonderful. Less condensation and dust to deal with can only be a good thing. Seemed very quick to light too and if it only took an hour to warm the whole boat that sounds very efficient. Not surprised we didn’t see the kitties if they have the warmest place in the boat. I have to agree with Kath, not a big fan of cold bathrooms. 🥶

As the smell can sometimes flow inward when its windy, it is not 'room-sealed', meaning the air intake is not direct from outside, as in a modern domestic gas boiler, but from the 'room'. This necessitates the ventilation you speak of, and should have a Carbon Monoxide Detector nearby too. I assume you have such a device, and check its operation regularly. Oh, and, "one big puff" - very funny. :)

Got to be better for Cath's back not humping bags of coal around and cleaner too. I've visited some narrow boats and they have been very smoky. There are some near to me and you can smell the log burner all the time when the wind is coming in my direction. On my cruiser I use a tiny electric bar and plenty of woolly pullies or just shiver. Great vlog as always and well explained. Thanks guys take care. Alan x
