Tradition tug style narrowboat (what's it really like) | Narrowboat Experiences [4 of 4]

It's important to talk about what really matters. Today on 'The Narrowboat Experiences' we talk to Margaret and Chris about living on a tug style narrowboat. They share their experience of buying 'Herbert' their 70 foot narrowboat tug, and what makes her a special narrowboat. Margaret and Chris both agree that one of the benefits of living on a narrowboat, or living this kind of life style is the benefits it has to their mental health. We have to agree with that!
Plus they have an adorable cat called Holly! What's not to like.

Margaret was talking about 'getting older on a narrowboat', and adapting the boat later on. I would like to see you interview long-time-boaters who are getting on in years. How are they coping with bridges and locks and gasbottles and so on. Thanks for this informative and personal info.

@@diaryofaherbert7423 Margaret, I missed your absolute best reason for living on a boat... is it the ducks, lol! I have Canada geese and mallards sleep on my pontoon every night, I guess I encouraged them by feeding them but its a joy to have them as my neighbours.... been on my boat since last july now and I feel so much different already....why it took me so long to get to this point is the only thing I would go back and do differently. Chris, what a lovely boat you have, I adore the tugdeck style.

This was not only a very open and interesting vlog, but for whatever reason, this was also extremely moving. The whole story from start to present time had a sincerity to it that was almost fairy tale like........ I'm one to those individuals stuck in the rat race, competing with everyone else in life, fighting for that last parking space in Tesco's, however at 60 this year I see very little changing. Circumstances are such that I love the idea of a boating life, but my nearest and dearest, would never warm to the idea of a liveaboard as a permanent thing. I would never put my own wishes ahead of anyone else's so I see us down sizing and hopefully getting a small bungalow with a bigger garden for our retirement. Thank you so much for your current series and I will pop over to see Margaret and Chris on their channel. Be safe.......

Thanks so much for your lovely comments. We are still partially on the hamster wheel as we work Monday to Friday and because of our choice to live where we do have a minimum three and a half hour return journey to work everyday so we take advantage of every possible weekend to get away from it all. I was 57 the first time I stepped aboard a narrowboat , just turned 60 now so please don’t let age put you off. Of course the needs of your family will always come first so if you could perhaps consider a share boat to see if you can get them (onboard) with the idea. Alternatively, when you did downsize, you could maybe find something close to a canal so you can have the lovely walks and maybe help out with locks, I’ve found it a great way to meet and chat to people. Margaret

That is a beautiful Russell Newbury engine and, while I might be inclined not to worry over it, he seems to love polishing it to a spit shine. I’m sure that work and the scenery along the canal help keep one from having mental health problems. Engines are not as capricious as people can be. Of course, Holly must help keep their sanity the way Munchy and Alice keep yours. Those of us who do not have canals to live on keep our sanity by watching videos like these. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I think polishing is his therapy, he can be in the engine room for hours. You are so right about Holly though, at his darkest times when I was still living in the north east, it was her that kept him going.

What nice people? And I love 'Herbert', especially that immaculate engine room. I am an engineer and appreciate that sort of thing, but I'm not sure I'd have the patience to keep it so spotless. Oh, and I wouldn't have 'hurricane lamps'; I'd have the real man's lamp, some Tilley lamps! The rest of the boat has, what I would describe as, 'an old signal box feel' (the phrase just came in to my head - sorry) but it is clearly an all 'mod con' home. Very nice. Couldn't handle the 'sleeping under the tug deck, though - I'm already too old! Great vlog as usual girls.

Thanks for your kind words Roger, spookily Chris is in the process of acquiring a Tilley lamp and is always talking about getting a set of Class 37 horns (demountable) - can you imagine hearing that coming towards you as you approach a bridge or junction.

Thank you for the great video. What a moving story, I am in a similar situation to the one Margaret was. My partner is buying a narrowboat (it won't be ready till 2021) and I will have to decide if I want to live on it. It would not only mean relocating from one town to another but from another country to UK! My plan is to spend blocks of 2-3 weeks living on it before I decide. See how we manage to be in such close quarters all the time as we have never officially lived together. For now, we are navigating the distant relationship challenge...

Hi MunichStar73, you are absolutely doing the right thing by spending time on the boat before making your decision. I can honestly say that even being cooped up together throughout lockdown when we couldn’t go anywhere or see anyone else, it was still the best decision I ever made. When space is at a premium, it makes you realise that people and relationships are what’s important not material things. I really hope it works out for you both and we get to see you on the cut next year. Margaret

For me I'm mostly interested in the views along the canal. So beautiful. Still I enjoyed this. I don't have a canal but I live in the woods. No sirens. I can't hear most vehicles on our little road. Lots of birds songs. An occasional moose passing through. More rare a few bears over 40 years.I understand mental health. If I was made to live in town I'd just fade away.

Yay, I took it to 1000 likes! I loved this little series you put together. It's been wonderful listening to other narrowboaters stories. My one concern is vandalism and anti-social behaviour. I remember an incident with Jono when kids run across his roof at 2.00am! It would be interesting if this is a rare thing or not, because otherwise, it seems so idyllic. Hoping you girls are keeping safe during this virus panic. Please stay safe and keep well.

Yes, I hear or read of things, but we have always been fine. We are pretty safety conscious and I think sometimes women just learn early on in life to look out and trust that gut feeling. So if it feels like not the right place to stop we don't. We are ok for now during the pandemic, but thank you for asking. x
