Great update, such a wonderful adventure for you and your family. The time off here, and in most of Europe is mandatory, they see it as part of the health care requirement, they also find workers are more productive when they get more time off. Yes, we had the same difficulty with our marriage certificate, my husband said it would have been easier if we were just registered partners. When we moved here (The Netherlands) 7+ years ago, I decided to retire as a nurse, because of my age, I was soon to be 60, it just seemed too much to go through for such a short time. We were fortunate enough my husband's employer organized a lot of the INS paperwork for us, so we didn't have the same stress you have had. We are in Amsterdam, and love it here.

Looking good and relaxed Diane. Enjoying your job and life in the Netherlands. I am a nurse also, for almost 50 years. Taking care for yourself is rule number one in nursing and taking care for your patients. And also to support your team and colleges.

So great to see this update and the progression you made! You’re finally actually getting settled! I’m sorry to hear they’re still bumbs in the road, but am pretty sure the central office of de Gemeente will have more experience with US documents (I’m currently following a course to be an employee for the Gemeente). I’m sure you will learn Dutch pretty soon because you immerse yourself in the language through your work, and if you ‘go to the nurses’ you will quickly pick it up. Dutch sounds very different from English but linguistically it’s actually pretty similar. Keep up the good vibes. I’m very interested to hear about the rest of your yourney!

After your visit to the language school, the best way to get better at Dutch is to consciously decide to only speak Dutch for you all at home. This is what we did when we moved to Canada as a family. After we had the basics down after about six months, we sat down at the dinner table one night and decided to only speak English at home to get better at the language. That helped tremendously without accents as well, since we were speaking English so much more than only at work or school. Try to only read in Dutch, and consume as much media in Dutch as possible, and leave English by the wayside for six months to a year. You'll have great results due to the immersion!

Hi Diane, nice to hear you are doing alright, work is going well and Elyse is doing fine at school. You've been talking about several topics like drivers licence and vacation. With regard to driverslicence you've got to keep in mind that some rules overhere are different than in the USA. E.g. we don't have a "keep your lane". In stead here is the rule "keep to the right". For unneccesary driving in the left lanes on the highway you can get fined €220. Also overtaking on the right is prohibited (Fine €250). Holding a phone in your hand while driving will set you back €350... fines are expensive! There are more differences, so calling a certified Driving school for some theoretical lessons might be a good idea to keep you out of trouble. BTW.. speeding over 50Km/h will get your driverslicence seized (2 months or so) in the Netherlands besides a hefty fine. On going on vacation outside of the schoolvacations and taking Elyse with you, might result in problems when you do not get permission in advance. Check the proper procedure with Elyse's school. Permission isn't given easily. And Official red tape... yeah, if the right papers aren't present things get rather nasty... I hope you can sort things out soon. In the mean time , enjoy the great weather and living !

Good to hear you’re finally getting settled. Best way to learn Dutch is to work with Dutch colleagues. Give it some time. We work to live and do not live to work. Can’t imagine working all the time without vakantie (you pronounce it as ‘vakansie)’. Every summer I take 3 to 4 weeks off. I work ft meaning 36 hours a week. Boss doesn’t appreciate when I work more hours. Oh and ‘regels zijn regels en afspraak is afspraak’ in NL. Though it can be tough sometimes and doesn’t come easy, I am overall happy with the service of the gemeente I live in. Looking forward to your future experiences 👍🏻

It sounds all good. Besides burocracy. But you have that everywhere. So nice that you found a job. That`s always better than sitting at home. Just to be in the middle of somethink. And you have your good education. All the best to you and family.

Well one difference with the US is our Dutch directness, in your case they are telling you you are doing fine on the job will almost every time mean you are indeed doing fine. And don't worry if you mess up sometimes, they will tell you too, but just to learn from it, even when it may sound a bit harsh. You'll get used to it eventually. Keep it up, you seem ambitious, you will get there I'm sure!

Welcome to the nice big city of Rotterdam. Its good to hear that you like to settle down and yes the Dutch language is difficult but you'll get there. Give it some time and enjoy the great city. I live close by in a city close to Rotterdam. But enjoy and much luck in the Erasmus MC.

I had the same issue with my birth certificate that affected the relationship with my kids and husband. It took me more than a year to fix everything so it’s all Good now but I understand your experience.

Diane, Thank you for your positive update. Yes, the government can be a pain in the ass because they are totally stuck in procedures. They often don't get the freedom to use their brains. I think the nuns will help a lot with your Dutch language, but you'll still have to do the job yourself off course. Looking forward to any videos you'll come up with. Glad things are going well. Bureaucracy here can feel like you keep on having to jump through new hoops, but once you are in the system it will become much much easier. The system will follow you when you move to another place/city/region here, so they always register things in your maiden name. My passport is for me with my maiden name, but it says "spouse of" to indicate the name of my husband (which I took). The husband put in a bit of effort and his Dutch passport says "spouse of" with my maiden name. But all my medical info and all other info will always be registered to me under my maiden name. If we divorce, if I remarry, the system will just follow me easily and correctly. As for why the accepting of marriage certificates can be hard: In the Netherlands you *always* have a civil wedding first (proper administration, proper logging into the system) and after then one you can have whatever ceremony you want, religious or otherwise. In some other countries you can have a church wedding (or synagogue wedding, or Buddhist ceremony or whatever) that will also be seen as a legal wedding. But the legal rules are not always the same as the cultural or religious rules about marriage (child marriages, second wife or husband, etc.). The agreements about accepting other countries marriages legally here mean that there have to be more strict checks on how legal that marriage is. Before I could marry my British spouse he had to travel to Paris to solemnly swear in the Embassy that he had never been married before, so the British government could give him an official paper stating that he was not married. Sent us all in stitches because that is kind of unheard of here.

You probably already have all your vacation days, but the administration systems adds days per month. At least that's how it is at my employer. Take care of yourself and be with your family, that's what those days are for. No one says on their death bed: I wish I worked more.

A copy certificate is a "Xerox" or kopie in Dutch. You want to confirm it is a Duplicate Original. That should possibly solve the problem.

Don't get frustrated about the marriage certificate. We live in Thailand and it took use more than 4 mounth to get our marriage certificate accepted by the Thai government i think it needed 4 different stamps from four ministerial departments and every time the certificate had to be sent (registered) back and forward from the Netherlands to Thailand vise versa!

Goed te zien dat het zoveel beter gaat. Not all public servants are smart and they tend to stick to official protocols. I see the same with my son who lives and works in Bangkok. They keep receiving official letters that they have to pay sums of money, while infact they do not have to pay because they hardly make any money. My other son studied in NYC for a couple of years and often had problems with his gov provided allowance. Het komt vast goed. Just one remark.. its the Netherlands, not Holland😊

​@@RogierYou eh, as far I know when someone lives in NL and work there you need to exchange drivers licences. The car her partner drives has a Dutch registration. However it is time-limited. Think it is half a year, or a year. In France there is a difference. Then it is dependent on the state the licence is issued.

@@Paul_C It seems so strange to me to have to give up your drivers license. A specially the US drivers license where its a legal ID needed to board a plane etc. Plus what happens when you return to the US? I am lucky since I maintained my Dutch and obtained a US drivers license. But for my American spouse it's a different story. Perhaps she could take lessons and do the exam in the NL but that is sooooo expensive and painful.

Things are sounding good, generally. I'm sorry to hear about the problems you're still having with getting things settled, but you'll find bureaucratic government (employees) in every country, not just here. It's just that you're probably running your nose into it harder than we Dutch do, simply because to the differences between how things are done here and in the US. Also, the way I see it, you're already in a much better position than a few months ago, when you had neither a permanent place to stay nor a job. It seems things are steadily improving and I trust your current problems will get sorted out in time. Also, it's funny to hear you mix Dutch and English, sometimes probably even confusing them inadvertently (for example when you say something like "Ingels" rather than Dutch "Engels" or English "English"). Strange though it may sound, and I'm no expert at this, bit I think this confusion is a _good_ sign and promises a lot for the future. It shows that even now, you are already engaging with Dutch quite intensively, and confusion between languages is quite natural at those early stages. Such confusion will disappear when you're getting more advanced and if you keep at it, in time you'll probably be able to flick your brain like a switch, choosing to think and speak in either Dutch or English as you choose without (too much) conscious effort, and without confusing the languages. And finally, don't be afraid to talk about the things you _don't_ like. No need to keep carefully wrapping it in disclaimers like 'I really like it here, but ....' . As it is, no place on earth is perfect, and that includies our country.

Going to the nuns always sounds scary. In the old days, we had schools run by nuns. They were super strict, had no humor at all and liked to slap the rod. I'm sure it's different now...

I don't think you will have the time and energy at the nunnery to do a vlog. That course is really intense. They will also no doubt tell you to use Dutch from now on for the best part of the day. Knowledge obtained quickly will fade quickly if you don't use it on a daily basis. So that is my tip for the day.

Nice to hear things are slowly falling into place. When it comes to the issues with the official documents...... All I have to say is: "yeah, ambtenaren" 🤦🏻‍♂🙄 I mean, I know they are doing their job and it's politicians making up the rules and regulations but come onnnn. "No you can only be 5 minutes late or YOU have to make another appointment. That's what you get for getting stuck in traffic" pffff. Tiring people sometimes. Wishing you good luck and fun at with the "Nons" 🤪 (from what I hear they are pretty good, but they are not magicians ok? The nuns are renown for their language courses. It sounds like you ran into a rather dull witted civil servant at the IND. Those are renown for that as well. I'd call the US embassy if there are hiccups, you will probably not be the first one to have their head explode when dealing with immigration papers related issues.

Well, the nunns, Regina Caeli, is close to where I live. Definitely not Holland, but Noord-Brabant! We are in desperate need of medical staff, so learn Dutch and contribute even more to our society. My admittedly primitive piece of advice in that respect: speak as little English as possible and switch to Dutch in everyday life activities. There is no better way to acquiring a language than speaking it!😊

Finally welcome in The Netherlands ! Please use The Netherlands when you refer to this country; Holland is the name of 2 Provinces in The Netherlands: South-Holland (in which you live) and North-Holland. Every time you refer to Holland it sound like you've been to the Provincial Government, in stead of the Rotterdam Gemeente or even the central Dutch Government (IND for example) To give you an comparison; The country you are from is called The USA, right? But what if people keep on referring to the country of the USA by saying Carolina. Well people may live in Carolina (North or South) and for what ever reason they may have to deal with the local Carolina Government or even with the country Government but Carolina is just like Holland nothing but a piece of The country... Nothing more and nothing less ;-) Talking about Holland as a country is like talking about Carolina as a country ! So please do not mix up these two institutions...

If i where you get some traditional dutch children books some even have audio with them so you can read and listen to on how its pronounced and what is said . Books from Annie M.G Schmidt ( our greatest childrens book writer and dutch version of roald dahl ) Or Dik Laan with Pinkeltje . tons of fun little books that learn children to read dutch , You might be surpised with how fast you learn dutch when using these books and learn new words.
