Great update, such a wonderful adventure for you and your family. The time off here, and in most of Europe is mandatory, they see it as part of the health care requirement, they also find workers are more productive when they get more time off. Yes, we had the same difficulty with our marriage certificate, my husband said it would have been easier if we were just registered partners. When we moved here (The Netherlands) 7+ years ago, I decided to retire as a nurse, because of my age, I was soon to be 60, it just seemed too much to go through for such a short time. We were fortunate enough my husband's employer organized a lot of the INS paperwork for us, so we didn't have the same stress you have had. We are in Amsterdam, and love it here.

I "studied" Spanish there for 6 months, but that was 44 years ago. I lived at a 30 minute drive from Vught and went twice a week. Useful? No. First they asked me where I was going and I told them Mexico. Apparently that kind of Spanish was not on their menu. The first day in Mexico I had breakfast and ordered "zumo de naranja". The head waiter had to come over and explained that I wanted "jugo de naranja". Total failure. So I got myself a Mexican girlfriend (later my wife) and learned Mexican Spanish in 3 months. I've been living in Mexico for 43 years now.

There is a bicylcle path that runs between the two rows of windmills at Kinderdijk, but I seems to me you've attempted to approach the windmills at the wrong spot. I think you've entered the side road called 'Overwaard', where you should have entered the side road called 'Nederwaard', which is just one intersection before/to the west of where you've attempted.

Toch moet je jezelf precies in dat soort situaties brengen om dat probleem uiteindelijk te overkomen en creatiever te worden je te uiten in de betreffende taal! Geen zorgen om het lijden, dat komt wel goed.

You look fragile, so I'm sending virtual hugs. Yes,. the language is hard, but the culture is a threshold too. It will come, in time. If you had moved within the US from one state to another there would be a learning process too. Getting to know the local memes (like the song Flappy), get a feel for what motivates people and what they deem normal, it is always hard. I think eventually you will be really happy here, but adjusting is a hard process, always. I *am* glad you miss nursing when you see people doing what you want to do. That feeling is universal and will help you a lot getting through the rough parts of moving and adjusting. And your daughter will help too. The Netherlands is very much aimed at family, and I'm convinced she will grow and that will help you adjust too.

Really a fantastic video. Bit long though. But the scenery so close to a metropolitan like Rotterdam speaks so much more than words. It reflects everything The Netherlands is really about and not vloggers that make videos of what is already in the brochure of the Dutch Tourist agency, completed with hagelslag, stroopwafels and haring. I wish more expats would put videos like this online. And as a very important tip: kids in The Netherlands all learn to swim at a young age with so much water around. It is absolutely necessary that you do the same as fast as you can. Kids will love swimming lessons anyway. She might have learned to swim already but lessons here are somewhat different and certified as well. In the Netherlands, there is always water somewhere close and you cannot keep an eye on your child 24/7. It is a very important skill and a tremendous (p)ease of mind. And your question about the mosquitos... We do not use aerosol for that. It is just a fact of life. Hard to avoid it on a bike on a windy day anyway. Just don't cycle with your mouth open🤪. Mosquitos (=muggen) are seasonal anyways. At home you can use a cream (non Deet) or a repellent on citrus basis. Just be careful with the 'Aedes albopictus" mosquitoes, known as "Tijgermug". They have a white striped body and can cause dengue (known as "knokkelkoorts" in The Netherlands) and seem to appear more and more these days although they are not local, inherent to The Netherlands and still pretty rare. Most are not infected with the dengue bacteria anyway so no need to panic. A lot of Dutch put a "Citroen plant" in the window or close by. I think it is officially called "Pelargonium graveolens" and can be bought in most flower and garden shops. It deters the mosquito from smelling the human body odor.

I’m Dutch, and I visited Kinderdijk for the first time in 2020 (I thought it was perfect giving it was nice and quiet during the pandemic- locals enjoyed it too, the lack of hordes of tourists). I honestly never realised that it’s super close to where I was born (Dordrecht- recommended! It has beautiful old architecture just like Amsterdam but it’s way less touristy, and not focused on tourism, dr*gs and pr**titutes). If it wouldn’t be flooded with tourists every year I’d enjoy visiting it regularly haha
