Life in rural Russia six months after sanctions | With Lars
Ойын-сауық
Let's see if the unprecedented Western sanction against Russia had any economic impact on the lives of everyday Russians in the countryside! Check out this video I made together with Lars from @SurvivalRussia. Lars is a Dane who moved to Russia over a decade ago and settled in a small village in one of Russia’s poorest regions. He knows this country better than many people.

When I arrived in a Russian village in the Arkhangelsk region, I realized that if there was an apocalypse in big cities from the disconnection of electricity, then these guys (residents) would always survive! They have their own cattle, their own poultry, eggs, milk, potatoes, and so on!

Interestingly enough, that exact thought came across my mind when I was visiting this village where Lars lives. It certainly lacks city comforts and it’s very unlikely I would want to move to the countryside anytime soon, but their survival skills are something else

Russia is big enough and widespread in so many ways that it can be treated as an independent country. It can be expected to make its own alliances. Doing that by force however, is not an option while it is so close to the European Union.

What's interesting to me is that rural people from Russia feel very similar to rural people in the US. I think we have much more in common with them than we do with people in our cities. Really impressed with their spirit of self reliance. Most governments tend to have crappy leadership, but it's not always a true reflection of its people. Wishing for peace in Russia/Ukraine.

This is exactly the sort of report I've been hoping for. My neighbors are foresters and small farmers, backyard mechanics, jack-of-all-trades. Money is always tight but their "make do" attitude usually carries the day. Our weather isn't as brutal but I see so many similarities. It would be great if you could do more reports like this, in even more depth. I am thinking the same thing about rural Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont -- there are a lot of similarities. Obviously, one huge difference is the opportunity to openly protest the war or complain about the lack of opportunity or things like decent health care. Makes me wonder what would have happened if the powers-that-be in Russia actually built a democracy in the 90's instead of looting the the carcass of the state and letting the Putin mafia take over. Would it be like a western European democracy, or would the rural poor feel isolated and marginalized, leaving them vulnerable to a Putin-type leader, anyway, the way we in the US have failed our own rural and working class people to the point where they can be convinced that Trump is their savior?
@ChrisGurin

@@johnnyrock70 Good points. Listening to the guy making hardware, and the brother farmers, I thought exactly the same thing! If they were here in rural PA, they'd likely be Trump voters, even if it didn't serve their interests. I hate Trump, but I get WHY he appealed to people who really have been left behind. @@ambercrombie789 I was not going to bother replying to your question, as all too often this ends up as nothing more than endless, circular arguments: true MAGA believers are immune to evidence and reason, and life is too short to bother with such obduracy. However, since you asked in a non-confrontational way, I will respect the effort and try to limit this to less than essay length. Trump is a liar beyond even the routine definitions applied to pathology. It does not matter even when he is confronted with multiple sources documenting his lies, he will respond with MORE lies. Multiple fact-checking sources documented more than 30,000 lies over four years. The "what-about-ism" response is usually something like "all politicians lie": true enough, but his lack of shame reveals a profound lack of respect for "HIS" people, in addition to his disregard of law. Trump is disloyal, to "friends" (rather what he momentarily calls people who parrot whatever toxic nonsense he wants to amplify), family (he squandered millions in inheritance, and stole money from family: see Mary Trump.), and most important-to the nation he took an oath to serve and protect. Trump is profoundly inept: as impresario of a gambling casino, where customers freely give money with NO expectation of return, HE LOST MONEY. Trump's knowledge of history, economics, foreign affairs, military affairs, so woefully deficient and defiant of correction, reveals he either has a life-long learning disability, or is simply too stupid to care. He should never have been allowed to run for any office, and we can blame his enablers and that insane cadre of voters for sustaining this toxic liar and thief. I'm done.
I loved this! I live on four acres in Michigan, collect mushrooms, heat with maple wood and wear mud boots most of the year. Inflation hits us, too! But, you have to laugh and carry on. I never did round bales for the horses due to moisture, but the Russian farms there are beautiful -- looked like Holstein cows -- good milkers! Tell Lars he is blessed! Your showing us real people and their everyday lives is an important window to the effects of the war (excuse me "special operation"). The Russian people are not the cause of the problems, yet it is they who are hurt by it. Best wishes for your continued success. A final thought: One of the early clips in your video shows a woman shopkeeper adding up a customer's purchase using an abacus. Living overseas, neither you nor most Americans have any idea what fascism is from which the USSR saved the whole world by paying twenty-six million lives of its citizens. Now America has staged a coup in Ukraine, overthrew the elected government and planted the seeds of fascism-Nazism in Ukraine. We Russians don't need it, so we will destroy fascism whenever and wherever it raises its head. You, like well-fed parrots in a cage, repeat only those words that the owner of your cage tells you. How can you say russian people are wonderful, they have a history of being barbarians, under Lenin, under stalin. Or maybe you didn't read your history when under stalin, they murdered through starvation, several million Ukrainians in 1931-33. So you say they are wonderful, in destroying a country and its people, in case you haven't watched the news, that Ukraine I am referring to! As I recall, it is russia and russians that invaded Ukraine, not the other way around. They are destroying cities, villages, schools, churches, homes, hospitals, power sources. raping women, children, even men, torturing civilians, stealing anything they can, and you manage to find them "wonderful" .I didn't know that "wonderful people act that way?? Suggest you google the term wonderful , for you next article.

Your logic is completely backwards and faulty. The exact opposite is true. If your government was a really good government, there would be no reason to want it changed. 🤷♀️ Your government just preemptively attacked and invaded a sovereign country because that country is teaching children to speak the Ukranian language. You do not see something wrong with that? Your government has rounded up and put in jail at least 20,000 Russian citizens for protesting the war out on the sidewalks. You do not see something wrong with doing that? Your government is putting Russian citizens in jail for 20 years for calling the "special operation" a war. TWENTY YEARS IN JAIL. You do not see something wrong with that? My friend, if you do not see that these are problems with your government, you are blind. Here in America, in the 1960s, the citizens held large protests out in the streets against the Vietnam "special operation." Was there any fear that our government would round up all of the protesters and make them disappear? No! The American government is the servant of its citizens. You know what the American government did about the protests? They stopped the war. Furthermore, these "unfriendly countries" that you conjure up are purely in your imagination. Every country wants to be friends with Russia. 🤷♂️ Also . . . The United States does not have an "expansive policy" -- but China does. 😎👍🇺🇸 ✝️

@@Matthew_Loutner My logic is precisely logic, and not a retelling of propaganda for unintelligent housewives, as you do. Let me remind you who imposed sanctions against the Russians and wants to change the government: these are the countries of the NATO military alliance. Let me remind you a little more: this alliance was created against the USSR. But when the threat of war with the USSR disappeared, the alliance remained and began expanding, encircling Russia. And let me remind you again: most wars and coups in the world occur at least with the participation of these very NATO countries led by the United States, and are often directly organized by them. China is a kitten against the background of the American death machine🤨

According to the license plates, they're in Kirov Oblast where my ex-wife is from. Kirov isn't much of a city and most people want to leave, but compared to the countryside in that region, it's like Vancouver. It's not really necessary to go that far away from civilization but alas, some people have family there, which keeps them from opting for farm life in a place with better soil (Rostov Oblast), sunnier weather (Krasnodar Krai), better access to Europe (Kaliningrad Oblast) or more interesting local history (Yaroslavl Oblast). I remember taking a plane via Kirov's local airport once and there was literally a dog sleeping in front of the terminal. Granted, it was 7:00 am. I've got to say that I love their traditional Russian brick oven there.

@@chestnut4860 This person is definitely American. The reason they feel this way is because Fox News and Voter Maps have told them so. It is very unlikely they’ve spent any meaningful time in an urban setting. You’ll come to find that in America, regardless of where you are, everyone largely wants what’s best for themselves, their families, friends, and country. The disagreements arise with how to achieve that, especially when it comes to urban/rural, because the two settings have different needs. Our polar political system is no help either, all it does is encourage the demonization of the other “side”, and the general public isn’t smart enough to see past it.

I bought a house in a village 150 km from Lars. I learned that by chance when started watching his channel. Well, my village has 3-storey brick buildings and 1-storey semi-detached brick houses. I bought my half for $2700, it's 76 sq m, which is a big flat, and is easy to heat. We all have central plumbing, and all 3-storey buildings also have central heating. I have an opportunity to connect my house to the central heating system, and I'm saving up for that. Plus we have good Internet, a nursing station, a library with a concert hall for 1000 seats, a big 3-storey school and a kindergarden. It's a just a village in the forest built for loggers and peat extraction. Villages are very different.
