Life in a Tiny House called Fy Nyth - My Parent's Tomatoes #2
My parent's lovely tomato growing operation. This is the second half of yesterday's video which you can find here - • Life in a Tiny House c...
***************************************************************
If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for over four years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.

Thanks for the tomato segment, your father is a lot like you, he explained things well. Learned a lot.
I can smell this video! I love smelling the tomato vines in my garden!
I have learned so much from your parents which will help a new gardener like me to understand the mystery of what's going on with my plant. Thank you
The source of your expertise and gentle demeanor, your parents, are truly impressive in their depth and breadth of knowledge, enjoyment of their work and genuine loving regard for each other. I always feel inspired to learn to garden after watching your tutorials and your parents have doubled that emotion.
Wow, your parents have quite the amazing setup!
Thanks, Ariel, for sharing...enjoyed and learned a lot. Take care and all the best at your new place...
Your parents gave a very interesting overview of their tomato garden. Would love to see more of them and how they live!
Thank you to your parents for all the tomato information on disease, pests, and how to take care of them. I will be watching this over and over all growing season.

Thank you so much for sharing Ariel, you and your parents are a well of knowledge 😊🙋☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️💗
That was great, your folks are extremely informative. I always like the way you explain things now I see where you get it from. Thanks for your Chanel
First ! Ariel , this was super informative, your folks are a wellspring of knowledge! The apple didn't fall far from the tree! Or should I say tomato! Lol ! Thanks for sharing this with all of us !
Well now that answered a lot of the questions I have had about tomato growing patterns, blight, preventative methods, terminology, and interesting varieties. They certainly did their research well. Here we generally have start our heirloom tomatoes from seed because most places don't sell them or they don't carry much variety. Thanks for all the help. If you could please pass my thanks to your parents I would be most grateful. 🍅🍅🍅

Thanks for a very enjoyable Part 2 Ariel 👌 your parents are a wealth of knowledge, as well as yourself! What an amazing range of tomatoes!! 🍅🍅🍅👌❤
Educational videos! I like how neat the tomato areas are kept with the mulch in the paths and growing areas. Thank you, to you and your parents for sharing your knowledge and years of experience :-).
Great information that will be put to good use. I am so grateful to your parents for sharing their knowledge. I personally look for the tomatos with the belly buttons or cat facing, lol, Mmmm, love me some yellow german tomatos, they're my favorite. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome parents with us Ariel♥
Thank you for the last two videos featuring your parents. I learnt a lot about growing tomatoes.
Your parents are lovely Ariel😘 The videos were really interesting. I got answers to a lot of questions😊 You definitely had excellent teachers! Many thanks to both you and your parents for sharing!
Mercy, I didn't know there was so many different types of tomatoes! Your parents seem like lovely people Ariel and we so appreciate them sharing their expertise. Very interesting. Now I'm hungry for a big fat juicy tomato! lol
I love your parents expertise/knowledge, same as your videos, so much knowledge. Thank you for your time, and sharing I truly appreciate it you can feel the love of others in everything you do. Thank you Ariel, have a blessed day!
There's a lot to learn about tomatoes and your folks have gained a lot of knowledge with their growing operation. I wish them all the best and high tomato yields. Thanks for sharing them with us.
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS PART! THANK YOU AGAIN FOR SHARING!
Ariel, there was a lot of good information in this video. Thank your parents for doing this. It sound like there is a gun range near by.

Glad you enjoyed it! I don't know of any very nearby range, but most folks do shoot....
I am learning so much just from listening to your Parents ! I never heard of the little Pink Bumble Bee Tomato ( How cute ! A new one to try out ! ) and I have had to deal with Cat Facing with the Mortgage Lifter Tomatoes and many of the Large Russian Tomatoes just naturally do that. I am okay with it as it doesn't effect the taste . If your parents ever start a Seed Saving / Selling Business please let me know !
Thank you for making this video of your parents tomato growing! Very informative!😀
Thanks for this, it was very informative. Growing up we had Roma and Beefsteak Tomato plants growing in pretty much identical conditions, and while the Beefsteak always split no matter what, the Roma never did.
I loved all of the information your parents offered in this video!!
Very imformative and nice to see your parent's growing operation. Thanks for sharing.
I was super impressed with your parents and their set up, now I'm so impressed at the variety of tomatoes that your parents have grown. Your mother was right, it was super wet last year from spring to now. Still wet! I sure hope it dries off soon and your parents have an ever better year this year with their tomatoes. Your parents are very knowledgeable as well but your mother said it best, in that she had more to learn about those darker tomatoes. Yep, we all can keep learning. Like I learned from your dad about cat facing or something to that effect. Never knew what that was on a tomato! Now I do. lol And like your parents, we would cut that part out and still eat the tomato. But we wouldn't give those away or sell those. Still a good tomato though! lol Thank you so much for sharing your parents with us Ariel. I can certainly see you in both of your parents, or should I say I see both of your parents in you! I know you are proud of your parents and I know they are proud of you as well. Well done to you and your family!!! Hugs, Brenda
Very nice outing to your parents and the subject of tomato growing! Thanks.
Thanks Ariel, great video. It's got me wanting to grow tomatoes again. But right now I sure want a big 'ol juicy tomato sandwich on soft white bread, lots of mayo, salt and pepper!

ty, I sure learned a lot. you come from good stock Ariel.
I see where you get your interest in detail/knowledge from. Your parents seem like good folks. How does your dad keep his shirt white though? I would be a messy wreck after even walking outside! Anywhere near dirt...it just jumps onto me!

He's been wearing the exact same white shirts and dark pants every day since before I was born. And since he doesn't like to worry about clothing, once a shirt gets enough wear or stains to not be a good go to work or away from home shirt, my mother sews a red line around the base so he knows that's a dirty project work shirt now till it's totally worn out.
Great tips here. Tomato growing problems were helpful.
Thank you
I think that German Striped tomato is perfect just the way it is. I know grocers will say no to those features, but there are companies like Misfits Market that specialize in the veggies that are perfectly fine but don't meet the "beauty standards" of grocery stores. Don't worry, strange tomato. There will be a market for you. I'd love to make some fried green tomatoes from these varieties.
And I thought the Indigo tomato had blossom end rot! Never knew there were so many varieties! I love pear tomatoes, an indeterminate, and is a bright yellow and sort of pear shaped. As to the blight, it’s everywhere. I’ve seen it in Southern California where there is little ground splash, so it’s a problem everywhere. I’ve been growing tomatoes and other vegetables since the 1980’s and I learned a lot from this video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Yeah there are more than 3,000 varieties of heirloom or heritage tomatoes in active cultivation worldwide and more than 15,000 known varieties. :) You might enjoy checking out some more varieties here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tomato_cultivars
Just to let you know, I water my tomatoes with a 4 liter milk jug every day. I have no splitting or cat facing at all. With the jug watering I have found to be more consistent than any other watering. And have never had any blossom end rot issues.
Enjoyed both videos...u're parents explains things very well!..informative
excellent video! your parents are fine people! thank you for sharing
Ariel thank you and your parents I learned so much
So very informative, Ariel! Thank you so very much for sharing this series with us!
That was fun! Thank you for sharing how your parents raise tomatoes! Lot of verity also :)
Wow the only tomato 🍅 I ever seen is the one on my cheese on toast its red and round 🤣I just see funky Tom's 😆👍
Thank you and your family.
Fy nyth translates to my nest in Welsh ☺
Awesome 👏!! Love your parents. 😀
I had no idea there were so many tomato varieties.
Despite the bits of blight those plants look extremely healthy. By October my plants in a similar growing season look very sad. The hoop and irrigation system definitely pay off. And I suspect they take better care of their crops than I do. 😉
Liked these videos. Lots of info.
Tell your Dad to be careful of brown recluse spiders with that wood mulch.
I think I bought a tomato like the striped one at the farmers market and the interior was absolutely beautiful. (and delicious) I didn't know what cat facing was called, I thought it was just the way those tomatoes looked.
Very informative. Thank you for that!!
Great content....
Great stuff 👍👍👍😃
The video was so informative
Very informational video.
Thankyou.

This is my favorite part! How did they choose the varieties they chose to grow? Based on color? Size? Will they grow they same ones this year? Jeeze I wish I knew them and could ask advice. They seem to know everything. Now I can't wait for that first garden tomato!

Nest Lady, A very simple yet concise lecture of growing hoop house tomatoes! Your dad appears to be a quiet commanding father with much wisdom and your lovely mom emulates modesty and humility. . . You definitely come from a Godly "nest!" Am curious if you can grow tomatoes in your land? Thanks for sharing! Phil S. Carolina

I do not have a long or warm enough season to produce tomatoes here.
The blight has made growing tomatoes difficult. The minis don't seem affected by the blight. I'm going to try the big guys at a remote property without gardening neighbors, in hopes of producing a beefsteak worthy of a BLT. Your parents are a fount of tomato knowledge. I live for the day I can have a hoop house. Thanks for sharing. Where are your parents growing?

your parents are so skillfull…..I learnt about greens and root vegatables and flowers from mine ….they were war teenagers ..my dad learnt to hunt the land out of nessesity ...my mom learnt from her grandmother..me and my sister ate pure food growing up...off the land ..fuelled by the sun..

Hydrogen Peroxide? Never heard of using that before. Thx for the tips
Can they replant next year in the same greenhouse? I’ve been told to rotate planting areas but I’ve always wondered if this is true.

Yes. But you do have to be somewhat careful to avoid getting established pests that keep multiplying and make sure to replenish any particular nutrients in the soil that that particular crop depletes.
Would love to know what kind of dishes and recipes ??? Tomatoes are my #1 favorite anyway you can use them !!!

Well you can check out the whole tiny house cooking playlist I do kzread.info/head/PLahYrM1qHHGOwEfjzW9MKoPYC7m9C4AIV . Though these are being raised for commercial sale, I know my parents make and can spaghetti sauce, tomato juice, salsa, etc
Horn worms! Hate them.
I need to be better at this.
Does your dad garden in his white shirt, and if so, how does he keep it white?
