If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for over four years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.

    What did you but under as a barrier under concrete block raised beds before you placed them besides the mesh (is that wire)? RE: salt - wouldn't that migrate/flow across the rock under the surface, possibly to under the vege beds. The wind sounds almost like the beach, ocean waves. Wondering how long the dead ground - stays dead in case the ground is later re-purposed. What is the white material and when/why do you cover the plants?

    Good job, Ariel---yet again. The Romans used to sow the conquered cities of really hated enemies with salt (like the Cartheginiams) and those cities, basically, are sterilized even to this day. Oh, a few weeds sneak in, as usual, and the dry southern Mediterranean climate further helps keep those pesky Carthage streets clear. But they really knew back then, how to put the 'whack' on anything ever growing back and salt was the tool.

    Ariel, this couldn't have come at a better time. I just discovered a stand of Siberian thistle in one of the big piles of wood chips where I'll be starting my Back to Eden orchard in the Fall, and I have to get rid of it (quickly, before it goes to seed) and refuse to consider synthetic chemical herbicides (it is to be an organic farm, after all). Thanks so much!!! from Sherry at Dragonfly Eden.

  • @FyNyth

    @FyNyth

    5 жыл бұрын

    If the thistles are really tall already, you may want to cut them off (and even bag the tops if they are anywhere close to flowering as they will try to produce mature seeds) rather than trying to spray a 5 foot tall plant. At least that's what I do when I get a really tall one to prevent more seeds. Just because it takes a lot of spray to cover a mature multiple feet tall plant. :) Then use spray to control any smaller ones as they pop back up. Just a thought, as the horticultural vinegar isn't super cheap. Best wishes!

    This is the best video! For so many reasons. 1--The time lapse.So good to see the before/after. 2--A TON of information!! 3. The safety info and the organic nature of 'the cure'! I wonder does it also deter critters? By critters I mean insects as well as the gophers/chipmunks that were such a problem in the other garden. Any info on that? And I found 30% vinegar on Amazon. Is that better or overkill? Hi Burley!

  • @FyNyth

    @FyNyth

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! I would imagine that this strength of vinegar could give a bug an acid burn if you sprayed it directly on to them. Unless the things that have an exoskeleton are not harmed by it, I'm not sure. In any case, as soon as it dries a few minutes later, I don't know that it would have any effect at deterring bugs or anything else. If you get 30%, it might kill bigger weeds faster. But since most things I've used it on die within hours, I'm not sure how much faster you can get. :) Or you could just dilute it more and have to buy less gallons.

    Just don't use salt if you want other things to grow in that area in the future! Yes, when it's a warm sunny day, the plants are thirsty so they drink up any available moisture quickly, drawing the acid down into their hearts which helps kill the whole plant.

    I believe you have your herbicides confused. Glyphosate (RoundUp) is a nonselective herbicide which will kill or damage any plant. 2,4-d is a selective herbicide used for killing broadleafed weeds (dicots) without damaging lawn grass. This is a very important distinction because people could easily destroy their entire lawn by spraying RoundUp/Glyphosate on it as you suggest.

  • @FyNyth

    If you reapply it often enough, or maybe it varies with the kind of grass? I have a friend trying to clear crabgrass from their yard by killing everything and then replanting. They've sprayed it three times now and the crabgrass is still growing. Though it certainly does long term damage to everything living in the soil and everything and everyone who feeds off of anything grown in it or drinking the water it washes into. I don't recommend anyone ever use glyphosate on anything at all.

    I do use vinegar to kills weeds and I knew that the grocery store vinegar wasn't always strong enough, it did work on more "tender" or young weeds, just not the tougher ones like mares tail, thistle, etc... though. But I didn't know where to get a more acidic vinegar....why I never thought about Amazon if beyond me! I will be getting some of this horticultural vinegar for sure as well as the orange oil to mix up and make a spray to spray with. I hate Round Up and don't like messing with it because I don't think it is safe not to mention the cost of it. Weeds are not stop here at my house, the wind blows those dang seeds like crazy as it is always windy here. I don't mind some weeds in my yard, but don't like them in my flower beds. lol As always Ariel, I learn so much from you and I appreciate you! Hugs, Brenda

    Yeah the less strong stuff can sometimes be enough for very young tender weeds. Just be very careful if you are going to use this in a flower bed as it will kill anything it touches! Including the flowers.

    Well that is a good tip. Vinegar. Not poison. It works. One good thing about grass clippings is that it can be added to the garden to add carbon to the soil. So, keeping grass has it's uses too.

    Thanks, Ariel. I'm going to get some strong vinegar and try it out. Do you think the acid stays in the soil for long? I'm wondering if we could end up with super acid soil where nothing will want to grow, like you said about salt.

    From what I've read it breaks down quite rapidly in the soil. And you can plant new things to sprout within 24 hours. I suppose if you sprayed the same area repeatedly for years you could have a problem, but I can't really imagine a reason to do that.

    Thank you for this excellent video! Was considering using this type of mix for killing back sod on the edges of roads in our road district, and am confident it will work as I need it to based on your excellently detailed formulation information and application advice. Much appreciated!

    Grass is a tough weed to get rid of! Another option you can use, if you are in an area up against something non-flammable like a paved road, is a weed burner which also works quite well to control weeds without chemicals. Best wishes!

    Ariel I’ve got a lawn infested with spiked thistle-like weeds. I don’t mind if I get dead patches after spraying the weeds, but I’d like to eventually reseed with grass after a month or two. Will the horticultural vinegar break down fast enough to allow me to reseed?

    After the vinegar dries onto whatever you have sprayed it on, it rapidly breaks down into it's component molecules. You should be able to plant anything you want into the area in a day or two after spraying with vinegar.

    If you reapply it often enough, or maybe it varies with the kind of grass? I have a friend trying to clear crabgrass from their yard by killing everything and then replanting. They've sprayed it three times now and the crabgrass is still growing.

"Glechoma hederacea also has a long history of use for food and medicine - with some precautions, as noted above.Food UsesThe Weed Cookbook suggest steeping fresh or dried leaves in hot water for 10 minutes to make a tea. This looks to work well. But it sure is not very cost effective. We spray waaaayyyyyy more than a gallon around our place. It would cost us hundreds and hundreds of dollars (possibly could hit 1,000 at times) if I used that. I srayed around our yard and fence and landscaping, I went through 6 gallons. Our driveway would take a lot more than that. We have a very long driveway. Like nearly 1/2 of a mile. But for very small areas, it would be good.

    Maybe letting it ferment longer? I don't know if there's a limit to how strong the acid will get from that. You might have to evaporate or distill some water out? Yeah I've seen wildlife come directly to human urine and eat all the dirt around it for it's salt. I know some folks say it deters wildlife and I wish them the best with that. Doesn't work here. :)

    Really there are only a couple of decent weed killers, by far Roundup and it's copies is the best and not toxic to humans if used with respect. As it will not kill everything, you also need some kind of 'hormone' quick knock down stuff. All of these hippie recipes are just a waste of time. Do it right and do it once,perhaps twice a year.

  • @FyNyth

    @FyNyth

    Well as you can see this "hippie recipe" did indeed work if you watch the video. I'd also encourage anyone who things glyphosate is not harmful to humans to do their own research about things like the soil microbes it kills, all the beneficial bacteria (that does things like regulate your brain chemistry among many others) in your gut that it kills, the super high cancer rates that are skyrocketing along the whole delta that drains the commercial "bread basket" area of the States and much more.
