Professor, I have a question. I have an idea in my mind that I want to pursue a PhD in. This idea might lead to a product down the line and I would like to establish a company that sells this product, after my PhD. There is a professor that has done work in this field and I would like to have their supervision for this project. Should I disclose my idea to them in hopes of getting a PhD offer with them? If I'm not selected, will my idea be used by them? If I end up doing a PhD with them, how will the royalty be split? Sorry for asking many questions at once, I hope this is not too annoying.

Typically PhD students do a Postdoc following the PhD and during the Postdoc period look for universities. This Postdoc period itself can take 3 years. But as mentioned in the previous comment, it is advisable to extend the PhD another year, where he can improve on his final project to improve his research profile. I’ve seen students who could have graduated in four years extending to six years, just so that they could continue to improve upon their research idea and complete it fully.

Good video... but Ph.D. is just one factor, the person has to be very well rounded for performing any job.....good communication, interpersonal skills, creativity, and team work are also key factors in finding job here in US!

In india ,prof .s starting salary is 1.00 lakh above if you get into good university after writing exams,what would be the salary of american prof.s.,is there any scale of pay for university .pro.s.,in india based on the purchase power parity you are as good as American rich man in india.you can have 3 maids to take of your household and may be you can appoint a driver sometimes.please let me know what is more attractive in usa.please do not tell me cutting edge research or hygiene, sanitation or something else.kindly reply so that i shall clear my mind.

A professor job in the US is usually a research focused job and pays 10 times or more than a professors job in India. Regarding drivers and maids, you can always find maids in the US as well to come to your home weekly or biweekly to vacuum and clean. There are usually no drivers. You need to drive yourself but the traffic for most part is very easy and it is actually a pleasure to drive. I will be happy to make a video on why I decided to be a professor in the US and what was attractive to me.

Academic jobs in sciences are much harder. People with PhD in physics take industry jobs or become post docs. It is almost unheard of someone becoming an assistant professor of physics right after finishing their PhD

The short answer is how strong (renowned) your network is and how good (unique) your research is. It is important to work with a well networked professor so that you may get access to the network, as they are the ones who will possibly hire you. Once you have the network, you need to make sure that you have good research, meaning you have a paper on a Novel idea, that the network you gained is interested in. Number of papers is not as important as few good papers in renowned journals (Nature, Science but at a minimum Phys review). I feel a good number of citations for each good is about 20 within a year. An average PhD who does good research will have 5 papers. Even if you are good in the aforementioned factors, you will need to wait (6 yrs PhD and 2-3 yrs of Postdoc) and then try hard for faculty position openings. You may want to consider applying to unis in Canada as well. The job search for prof will be done during your Postdoc.

Check individual universities brother each univeristy have different criteria.choose the best university according to ranks.For usa the criteria your overall achievement like previous research experience peronality extracarricular strong sop.in some European countries they only Consider marks.so decide wisely.

Depends upon where you are getting ur Ph.D in India.. If u get ur Ph.D from , IISc, TIFR, IISERs, Top few IITs, HBNI, IMSc, ISI etc. then you have many oppertunities abroad PROVIDED u have a very good research as well

Brother select your phd in top universities don't go behind top countries. There are universities in usa ranked below 200 whereas iit bombay ranked 172 iisc 185 and iit delhi 193 undoubtedly these universitys are better than lower ranked us univeristies.but if we talk about elite us universities there is no comparison.if you want more opportunities after phd choose any low ranked us universities way better than indian institutions because of employment opportunity but if you are passionate about research then choose university according to ranks.peace.
