This Professor gives the best advise out there online in KZread for free. Gem of a human being. You won’t see a lot of Professor doing what he does. A lot of Professor only gives advice in office hours or if you are lucky enough to be the Professor friend, student or family.

Great video Professor ! Could you please make a video about how professors maintain a healthy research pipeline, get their teaching done and also provide service to the school/discipline ? How do some prolific scholars publish one FT 50 after the other? Is publishing more about smart work than hard work? Request you to focus on fresh PhD's / young faculty. It boggles my mind to see how some scholars work on multiple FT50 papers in the US while in India we struggle with 2 or 3 'A' manuscripts. Is their a secret sauce? Is it a product of their training as PhD scholars? Any advice would be much appreciated ! Regards, Sudeep

When choosing advisor make sure that the student chose a professor who is midway through his career . Working under an Assistant professor is a bad idea and the same applies to the one who is close to retirement. For mental health one has to make sure that they don’t work with a micro managing advisor . You don’t want him to check on you every day , texting or giving you phone calls . He should only give you direction and then stay way until one on one meetings to see progress . Usually when you have a micromanaging boss the student get exhausted , they overthink , experience insomnia that even effects their personal life . Check what the lab alumni is doing if they still continue in academia that is a great sign - it shows that they loved the experience in the lab prior to where they are now . Usually Indian students need a push to work because that is what they experienced in India . but what research actually needs is self motivated individuals - this has to come from inside and not from outside . Only self motivated individuals become ultimately successful in scientific research at least .

Can you work part time after u got the stipend ? And with the stipend will you able to save some money after 4 years for future as u have said u should have one year rent to survive . IF you could spare 10 minute and make on this question will be grateful

too many factors come in. How much is the stipend? Depending on the university and the department stipend could be as low as $12k per annum and as high as $50k per annum. Depending on the location, your expenses can be low to high. I cannot tell. You can get to know all this only when you actually get admission and they mention your stipend in your admission letter. Regarding having enough savings for rent, it was not for students. It was meant for working professionals. It is hard for students to save that much if not impossible.
