A new LGR video always feels like having some nostalgia time with an old buddy. :-) I guess that's the power of shared memories of an era passed.
Just wanted to say thanks to you and your strangely therapeutic yet entertaining videos for helping me get through a tough patch in life. It's odd how videos so unrelated to anything I'm normally interested in can bring me such comfort and enjoyment. You're the man, Clint.
I used to have one of those Game Star things when I was a kid. You plug it into your keyboard port then plug your gamepad and keyboard into the box, then you use the buttons on the box to map keyboard keys to your gamepad. I loved using it on old dos games with no (or difficult to get working) joystick support.
@BolbiiS
6 жыл бұрын
You keep calling it just a gamepad, which makes me wonder: are there other things that use the NES connector type? Is it not proprietary?
@homeycdawg
6 жыл бұрын
The Game Star unit , when new, came with it's own custom gamepad which was NES compatible, but an NES controller can be used with it as well. I don't imagine they got permission from Nintendo to use the port. They probably just copied it because NES was hot stuff at the time and using the NES port gave them a large and already existing collection of compatible peripherals.

I had Alpha smarts in Jr. High Clint. It was kind of a stop gap for a laptop on some cheaper schools. A student could sign them out and take it home to type an essay or something. Then they bring it into school and plug it in with a text program like Word open. Then, after pressing a button it rapidly 'types' what you have on the Alpha Smart into the document in a few seconds. It was an odd thing and something I had to write many, many book reports on.

Camoose yeah, I work in education and we used those alpha smarts back before laptops and chromebooks where around/affordable. It basically retypes the doc back into the computer, into what ever app you have open

I could be lost for years combing through your collection. I am highly addicted to tech and it is not limited to the new and cutting edge stuff. Older tech allows such insight into the progression of tech and even often time great ideas that have been abandoned that would b great if brought back.

Ah, I can tell you about alphasmarts! They're basically little word processors. The company has had a fair few names, but they made a bunch of different models over the years. They went from the early ones (like the one you have) to some which looks VERY oddly shaped and very apple-y, to some newer (but equally oddly shaped) ones. The later ones had touch screens and Wifi, even (I think they were based on Palm OS? Seems right up your street!). I used one in school for a while because it was cheaper for the school to buy, and easier for me to carry, than a Laptop. IIRC You could print directly from some of them, but I used to send the text to a word document. I think it might have used a PS/2 cable and then sent the text as though it was coming from a keyboard? Of course I'm sure you've found all of this out by googling it by now, but I've had first hand experience with a few models. Still, if there's anything you can't work out, I might be able to help ^^,
@jamiemarchant

I know one model did run Palm OS, you could run fullscreen apps made specifically for it or Palm OS apps, the Palm OS apps would be in the very centre of the screen.

LGR! I used a versionof the Alpha Smart in school! it was for children who had issues writing who were more comfortable with a PC so they could have somthing cheap and portable to take home and write an essay with and be able to come back to school with it to print out! This was back in the day when computers werent nearly as prevalent as they were in nearly every house hold.

Japanese instant noodle (called: Cup ramen) is very delicious. You will be happy after 3-5 minutes with pour hot water. ;) Caution: U.F.O. is "Cup Yakisoba". Pour hot water and wait 3 minutes, please put sauce after throwing away hot water. If you put sauce without throwing away hot water it will be a tragic food. (T-T)

My brother brought back some UFO from Japan. They were delicious. Why do I have to be cautious of "cup Yakisoba" if you dont mind me asking?
@ActualCharky
6 жыл бұрын
CalQaida I think they mean because it's not a Ramen type noodle- it's not meant to be a soup. If you treat it like a ramen it'll be watery and horrible- or as they put it, a "tragic food!"
@yutan15silvia

Yes. Ramen is soaked in soup and eat, but Yakisoba has no soup. It eat with sauce. If you put sauce without throwing away the hot water of Yakisoba, the taste will become very thin. Taste is very bad.

That socket is funny, like that one centimeter of pcb is saving any space, while the socket still makes it bigger xD But a really nice board, there is only missing one SDRAM Slot to be better than any 486 board I ever had, but the IDE controllers onboard was a dream in those times.

Cheers for the video. Fascinating as always 👍
You were exactly right with what the Alphasmart was. I had a later version when I was in high school. It's a portable word processor with several files (Mine had 8) and a few basic things like spellcheck and a calculator. As for the direct connetion, it downloads by emulating a keyboard (Mine did it over USB), and simply typing out the contents of the file at high speed.
Glad to know that there are other Turkish people like me who's following your great content, Clint. Cheers!
@Mimsi

I didn't expect so many Turkish people as well. But I am actually surprised that I was the first to send a package. Dude it isn't that expensive to send it over. PTT charged like 120 TL, the other firms charge 3 times as much. Just saying trust PTT :D
I use to use the alphasmart and a similar item in school, mostly it was so you could type up notes and projects in class without the extra distractions that a pc would give you, then you uploaded it to the computer, usually via a ps/2 conversion and it just typed the keys for you.
Always enjoy watching these :D
I know this is a tech show mostly, but I'm PUMPED to see that food stuff used in a potential LGRFoods!
Amazing items! Love the artwork items! Looking forward to the oddware type items being featured.

My friend found a AOL branded digital camera while thrifting that we weren't sure if you'd be interested in, since we know you cut down on donations. I'm pretty sure he picked it up.
I love these unboxing videos. Don't turn down too much, please!
Borland...brings back some magazine coverdisk memories!!
Thanks, I really enjoy your stuff!
The unboxing videos are right up there with the thrifting videos for me.
Just finished restoring one of those 5x86 AMD systems recently, and am getting ready to build a genuine 4x86 from scratch. I love these boards because they're so easy to work with - compatible with all Socket 3 CPUs and modern enough to have a built in disk controller and a non leaking lithium battery. Not to mention the PCI interface for easy setup!
I just got the biggest nostalgia wave thanks to that Alphasmart. Most of the stuff you look at is a tad before my time (born in '98, I'm a young'un), but the Alphasmart continued to be produced for a while. Don't know the specifics, but I do know that I had a couple of them back in middle school for my IEP. It's basically a dedicated word processor, in my case meant to allow me to take notes in class. In reality, I ended up converting a lot of ebooks into files readable by it and... well, I didn't get much work done. The ones that I had were the Alphasmart 3000, which was less capable and pretty much exclusively a word processor, and the Alphasmart Dana, which had a touchscreen and ran (based on a quick google search) Palm OS 4.1
what does a guy have to do to get their hands on a set of those awesome coasters!?
There is a later Alphasmart called the Dana that is like a TRS-80 Model 100 and a Palm PDA had a really awesome baby together.
You need to setup a pc museum, such a shame to have all this goodness locked away. Great vid as always Clint
Anyone notice that the type-written letter is perfectly justified on both margins? That indicates some serious hobby psychosis and I applaud that.
I used one of those AlphaSmart Pros back in early highschool in 1999. It is a word processor of sorts, and it plugs into a Mac or PC. You open a word processor there, and the unit basically types at fast speed into the computer. Crude, though mostly effective.
I remember those PhysX cards well, I had one for a time which I bought for about 30 dollars or so? I had the ASUS P1 version. My friend had one and was in awe when playing things like Bet On Soldier back in the day. Awesome to see the more expensive XFX one after so long.
Hey Clint? I don't know if that AlphaSmart Pro is the same, but they're effectively word processors that transfer data by _pasting_ the contents of the internal file into whatever program you're running at the time. I know later AlphaSmart models could also be used as a keyboard outright when connected. In fact, the AlphaSmart 3000 is something I want to go with my bondi blue iMac G3. They're definitely worth looking into for something like Edutainment Month, since they were made for the education sector.
@ActualCharky

Teradyne Ezeri from what I can tell that's exactly what it is. He should look for a few more to cover all the apple-imitating goodness and the palm OS Functions on the Dana!
PhysX cards were around for such a little time. I remember seeing tech demos for how they worked cloth and such. I love seeing your boxed copy of Shadow of Yserbius there in the background. I used to love playing that on The Sierra Network back in the day along with Red Baron. THE LAGGGGG! :) I also see Alien Legacy. Bought that new and tried for a week before returning. It just wasn't Master of Orion lol.
holy shit Violet Crumble is my favorite candy and I'm in the US! Found it at a random gas station in Vermont on a snowboarding trip over 10 years ago and been hooked since. Can only find on Amazon now
I had an alphasmart 3000 in school; in my region they were distributed for all kinds of individual educational plans to help kids with writing. I typed at about 60 wpm even in elementary school so I managed to squeeze one out of my schoolboard. You could use it for writing documents, and the documents you saved could be sent to a computer by loading it, plugging into the PC as a keyboard input device, and pressing the 'send' button while at a empty word document. It'd then spit the whole document out super fast for you to continue editing or print. It also had a converter cable so you could plug straight into a parallel port and interface directly with a printer; I don't know if this earlier version can do that however.
The Alpha Smart is basically a small portable word processor. I was in an experimental class from kindergarten to 6th grade, and we were required to do all of our school work on an alpha smart. We used them all day in school, and we took them home at the end of the day. It was an experiment in comparing student grades and achievement via pencil and paper work versus digital work. It was a completely flawed seven year test, because we were still required to do each assignment pencil and paper for penmanship. Of course our grades were going to improve, because we had to do the work twice.
Awsome haul. So cool that people send you this stuff.
That's a nice sign. Really pops out on the shelf. Nice.
Today, I can officially join the club of watching one of your videos minutes before you upload a new one.
Hi Clint! The Alphasmart line was a wordprocesser/keyboard. To upload your 'file' you used a cable to hook it to the computer, then hit the 'file' button that would then type the whole thing in by, well, typing it in. I had one as a high schooler before I got my first laptop. They were mostly marketed at LD classrooms and similar. (I actually had my own of the Alphasmart 2000 if I remember correctly.)
I used to have an alphasmart 3000 for school (which was usb based, but it works the same way as your alphasmart pro). It's a dedicated word processor (only does word processing, some came with a calculator program and the 3000 series came with spell check and even had programs you could buy and add on to the alphasmart.) Once you were done typing and were ready to get your document off it, what'd you do would be to unplug your keyboard from either a Mac/IIGS ADB port or PC PS/2 port and plug in a fancy "y-cable" box that would connect to your keyboard but also have a free cable to plug into your alphasmart. You'd then open up your word processor program of choice on the desktop, and hit send, and it would "type" your document up in a few seconds. Of course you don't need the cable box, a straight connection will work, and the alphasmart is seen by the computer as a keyboard and registers all (except for alphasmart specific keys) the keys. Hope this helps you.
That Alpha Type Pro. We had those in 4th grade. They would bring them around on a cart and we would practice typing on them. You could write an entire document and then upload it to a computer for printing. It was a more portable and fully digital word processor. I don't recall any ability to code on them, but that may have been outside the scope of what our school used them for.
That Ageia physx card in the box is an awesome display piece!
Oh man, I used to use Virtual PC all the time on my old G4. I even ran 3dsmax and Unreal Editor under it so that I could make my own Unreal Tournament mods. Yes, it was VERY slow.
I never comment but wanted to this time, I used to be a Staples Electronics Supervisor from 1997 to 2001 and many of the things I see on your programs I used to sell, or in many cases not sell at all :) I forgot about the Ditto Drives and then Jaz and Zip Discs, these came out as rewritable CD ROM drives were coming down in price and many times after purchase the items would be returned due to it being easier to burn a disk then use the external drives. I have a suggestion for Oddware, look up the PalmPilot Phone, we never sold any of them and I think the two we had were returned.
OMG! :D I used to have an Alphasmart back in elementary school! I'd completely forgotten those existed. Lol
