Some of what I loved about it all was not just LGR's enthusiasm, but you could see the enthusiasm of the previous owner. The pins in the map, the meticulous notes in nearly every game box, the trinkets for each game still there; all of this tells a beautiful story. I'm sorry for your loss, I know how hard it can be to lose someone you're close to, but, in a weird way, they definitely live on in the things they loved. It's wonderful that you could share that love with the everyone. I really enjoyed seeing the little things.

Thank you for your kind words! Honestly, in a way, that's another reason why I sent it to LGR - were dad still around, I know both of us would be watching and loving his videos, so they seemed like a great sendoff. I do miss him - but I am incredibly thankful for the time I had with him, too. :)

Not only an amazing collection of PC history, but also a nice tribute to Jackson's father, even though we didn't know him. It's so cool to look into the past and think about the person who picked out and played these games, including his awesome handwritten notes. Great video. Thank you Jackson and LGR!

I was commenting something similar, but I stumbled to your comment. Aside from strange and wonderful boxes (the first three ones from infocom weere amazing), I started thinking "who was the owner of these games? what is that beautiful calligraphy?" Wow. A glimpse into the past.

  • @BouncyTEM

So, I can answer that directly, as I am the Jackson that sent all this. =p Dad was a programmer most of his life, and was a serious tabletop rpg geek too, so when video gaming started to be a thing, naturally he'd dive right into it enthusiastically. As for that calligraphy, that is actually my mom's handwriting - she's a geek too, so this huge set of games was actually a mix of both of their collections. (if you want to get an idea just how geeky both my parents were, that's simple enough to answer too - they met online doing rpg stuff back in the day of 300 baud modems.) I've been talking with mom about seeing if we can get a font made of that calligraphy, too.

That is very cool and seeing all this stuff brought out some emotions in me thinking about all that time they spent pursuing their beloved hobbies while computers were starting to be developed. Nowadays we have so much choice and accesability in so many different media forms (especailly video games) that quite a few of us struggle to find a game to dedicate time to, but back then you had mostly limited choices in video games and it was common to sink hours into single player games which would let your imagination run wild without much distraction. I cherish the time when I didn't have many games on the family computer and would play and replay my favourite levels from classic games. Much love to the appreciation your parents and yourself have for these things as well as this awesome channel.

I have fond memories of playing games like Wizardry on my Apple IIe clone back in the mid 80s as a teenager. I must have clocked about 200 hours on that game alone. Ultima 4 was probably the other game I spent countless hours in as well.

Donating to LGR rather than selling is an awesome move. Sure you can sell and make a mint but, like all future artefacts, it's important to send them to a good home where they can me treated well and archived. We wouldn't have half our historic cultural knowledge if books weren't preserved by libraries. Archiving is awesome, 10/10

THIS IS AWESOME! JACKSON IS AWESOME! Where do I send pics for LGR Thrifts? I have found a couple GREAT things in recent months! I found an old Packard Bell PB300 in great shape today, though it seems to need a new power supply. 25mhz i386 and a whopping FIVE MEGS OF BALL-BUSTINGLY FAST RAM WOOOOOO! Oh, you may know of something that has been wracking my brain for years now. There was a game I played back in first grade, so maybe 87/88, and I'm pretty sure it was called Brain Drain, but I can't find crap about it on Abandonware sites or anywhere else. It was a puzzle game, and there was a bit where you played as a detective trying to solve a case, and I'm almost certain the part where I was stuck was trying to track the perp down from a shoeprint that had been left in wet concrete. It had rudimentary graphics, and relied on a text parser I know for sure.

This made me think of my dad. When we moved back to Italy from the US, back in the early ‘80s, he was one of the first and earliest IT consultants around in our area, here in Central Sicily. He was not too much into videogames, but he did enjoy one of the earliest versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator, which came into a ring binder book, CGA graphics and stuff. I remember my brother and I messing with all his Lotus, Works and other diskettes searching for some games, and he gave us Alley Cat and QBasic with Gorilla and Nibbles... so sweet and fond memories. Nowadays all that stuff is just gone, as well as my dad, and I miss him and all that so bad it hurts sometimes. This video made me both happy and a little sad. Thank you, Clint for all the sweet memories! No wonder you’re the only “KZreadr” I follow so regularly!

The handwriting of the original owner marks him most likely as an engineer. Before CAD, engineering students had to have a lot of drafting classes including ink lettering resulting in some sublime penmanship from that generation. They could also sketch 3 dimensional assembly drawings on the backs of napkins.

This video took a lot more than 34 minutes for me, because I had to check out at least the Mobygames-page of every game that I wasn't familiar with (which was most of 'em.) :D So cool haul, congratz.

I wasn't too into any of the games as you were showing them, though they were all my type of topic (Fantasy is my go-to genre), but I freaked out when I saw Ys in the collection! I've loved that series from when I first saw the artwork for Ys II back in the mid-90's. It's actually what spurred me onto drawing my own anime style art, so it is something special to me - though I only have one of the games (the one for PS2)! Thanks for the video, Clint! ^_~

Super-late reply to this comment, but I'm just now catching up on this video! Add my sincere thanks for sharing these with LGR, and consequently to LGR for sharing them with the rest of us. I have fond memories of a bunch of these games (often their Atari ST versions rather than PC) and it's also cool to see stuff I've never heard of! Your dad was clearly an awesome geeky guy, and I take my hat off to him and his collection.
