LG Mega Capacity 5.2 CU FT Front Load Washer and 9.0 CU FT Dryer Review

A review of LG's Mega Capacity 5.2 CU. FT. Front Load Washer (WM8000HWA) and matching Mega Capacity 9.0 CU. FT. Electric Dryer (DLEX8000W) after having owned them for over six months.
Like everyone else I was skeptical of the price of these units at first. But after having used them for several months I can confidently say they are worth every penny.
June 2018 UPDATE
After 3 1/2 years I had my first part fail. I received an "OE" error code on the washer which means it can not drain water. After a little research I determined the drain pump was bad. They're $20 on Amazon and I found one locally for $38. I installed that today and I'm back in action! If you find yourself in the same boat, please just tip the washer back 45 degrees and replace it from the bottom versus removing the top and front panels like some suggest. It could be that the pump just failed, but I fully believe it was a result of negligence on my part for only cleaning the filter on the unit twice in these past 3 1/2 years. It clearly states on the filter door that you should clean it monthly.

    Great review!! I've owned this duo for 3 years now and LOVE it. I bought through Sears, which at the time had an excellent warranty program and have only had one issue with my washer, which they promptly fixed. So far I'm so glad I went with these units... the extra capacity is bar none the best, it cleans better no matter the load size. I haven't tried the steam features in either. I just have a hard time not picturing my dryer vent tube not clogging up more with steaming in the actual unit. I really need to clean the filter on my washer, thank you for reminding me!

    7 YEARS in the business. I have gone threw lots of frontloaders. But LG has put some good effort on making these machines. It is awesome to see how much spin speeds they have added to this model. Simply the techniques of destributing clothes, sensing load, spin direction change and that lovely way of tossing the clothes from side to side explains how much technology has advanced with LG. On the tech side, SUPER EASY to work on. Love it!! All you other old school people with toploaders, not just because toploaders use more water means it cleans better. Remember engineers built these machines they are the smart ones! :)

Time . temp. mechanical action of the washer, detergent chemistry are all important. their only criteria is the price point they are trying to reach and the gross profit per machine, not the quality of product or cleaniness of clothes. We have had this washer and dryer for a couple years now and absolutely love it. We initially purchased this set because of its capacity. I was so sick of taking our king comforter to the laundry mat. We now have our first child who is 2 months old and we use cloth diapers. This washer does an incredible job at getting them clean. If there is one recommendation I would make for future washer and dryers it would be to invent a way to send an end of cycle message to your cell phone. My laundry room is in the basement and it would be so nice to know right when the cycle is complete so I can start the next load. One day I hope.

    +JJCoolStuff Im really concerned about the stuff I'm reading about the spin cycle. some folks are saying if you wash things like beach towels with your swim trunks or area rugs (we do often) that it will be an "unbalanced" load and the spin cycle will never happen. Is this the case. I don't want to be left with soaking wet rugs and beach towels. this might be show stopper for me. Also do you know if the kenmore is the same as the LG. They seem quite similar

  • @Jjcoolstuff

    @Jjcoolstuff

    8 жыл бұрын

    I tried to touch on this in the review a little. If you wash one really heavy thing by itself then you'll get an unbalanced load and it won't complete. We wash beach towels, oversized towels, blankets, rugs, etc with no problems. The only time I've had an issue is if you only wash a rug by itself or with just a couple of small items. Then it can't offset that weight and you get an uneven load error. Otherwise, this thing handles heavy loads really well and does a great job repositioning clothes if they get unbalanced and using bearings in the drum to offset uneven loads. I wouldn't be concerned about it at all unless you like to wash rugs one at a time. If that's the case then throw in a few towels with it to help balance things. After all, you've certainly got the capacity to do so.

    We just purchased and are waiting for delivery (next week) of the set... We purchased the WM8100HVA (washer) and the DLEX8100V (dryer)... We originally wanted to the 9000 model which I'm just assuming is the newer version of these with a redesigned look... We compared the differences and ultimately decided on the 8100 because they are stack-able whereas the 9100 is not and we also got a killer deal from Lowe's who had an ad that said they would beat any advertised price by 10%... Absolutely couldn't pass that deal lol... Enough about my story... This was probably one of the best videos I've watched on these machines... Very clear and to the point with all the answers I had in my head to ask... Other videos talk about all the features on the panel etc... This showed how it washes, the capacity, some great tips, and the dryer and a neat steam feature!! Thanks for uploading!

    My parents replaced their poor performing SpeedQueen front loader with the LG with the normal sized drum and I was blown away. The water during rinse makes an amazing difference. With the SpeedQueen, soap never came out of the towels - they were matted down and musty smelling. With the LG, on one wash they came out fluffy and smelling better. In fact the same towels wouldn't fit back in the cupboard they came out of (heck yes I rewashed them all - worth it!). I have a Whirlpool Duet HT that is still chugging along but the violent spin cycle on it has me wishing my Whirlpool would break and give me an excuse to replace them. The LG's are absolutely silent when washing, and you can barely hear a faint whir on high speed spin. Simply amazing. Never thought I would gush about a washer/dryer combo, but they NOT all built the same. Whatever they are doing, LG stomps the crap out of any other set I have used.

The only difference at 10 years old it is not so quiet, but its still not as noisy as other machines, you can spin at 1400rpm and still wath tv. I highly recommend the direct drive models. I love the tinkle notifications too. I can wash a king size 10.5 tog quilt with the special function.

    I love your review, just got my duo with pedestals on the 23 of this month! I had Maytag top loaders and i could not stand them and after two and a half years i decided to purchase another set. I am so pleased with them thus far..just wondered if you know of the light turning on when opening the door?? Or do I have to press the power button? The Maytags did turn on..that all I really liked about them. Thanks for your review even though I had already purchased mines, i wanted to see if you would shed some light on the light feature if any.

    Thank you so much for your review! It was very helpful. I did have a question about the detergent pods, can you use them in the washer? And if so, do you just put them in the machine like normal? Also, would you recommend only using the regular liquid detergent?

  • @Jjcoolstuff

    @Jjcoolstuff

    9 жыл бұрын

    You're welcome. You can definitely use the pods. I've used them a few times with no problems. Just throw them in the drum with the wash like normal. I prefer liquid because I can control how much I use and therefore use a much smaller amount. I had heard that the reason people have smelly towels with front loaders is because of soap residue. I always make sure to use a minimal amount of detergent (it still gets very soapy) and sometimes will even do an extra rinse. We've never had smelly towels with this washer.

    I know this is a 5 year old video, but I have to put in my input on it. I got my first front loader in 1999, a Frigidaire model, and at the time, was only 2 models available made for the US market (the other was the Maytag Neptune made by Maytag). Compared newer washers, it filled s third of the way up the tub, and did a good job getting my clothes clean. The longest cycle was only 50 minutes. I only replaced it, because the bearings were about to give out, and my 15 year old Hotpoint dryer stopped working completely. In February 2012, I bought the entry level LG front loader, which at the time was 3.6 cu. ft., but now 4.5 cu ft is now the smallest size. Anyway, the entry level model doesn't offer turbo wash, and LG makes the entry level washer to fill in a rising effect. So when I did my first few washes, I saw no water on most of my clothes. After letting my washer fill without clothes, and the tub had a shallow amount of water. Makes me think whoever at the EPA thought front loaders are only meant to be filled at the most, half way with clothes. Front loaders are meant to be filled loosely to the top, then when wet, be 2/3 of the way full. So I went against the manufacturers settings, and adjusted the water level to closely match the water level of my old washer, just so every piece of clothing got wet. I'm happy to see my clothes get clean. It's now 8 years old, and still working. My next LG will have the turbo wash, but I expect to still have to adjust the water level, if the factory settings are not able to get all my clothes wet. My next washer will be bigger than needed, since they're (washer makers) not making many washers less than 4 cu.ft. I just wished washers didn't have all these extra settings that I feel are unneccessary. I got by just fine with just 6 cycles on my first front loader, though I only used 2. On my current model, I only use just 1, and have to manually add an extra rinse, so it does 3 rinses.

    I purchased the 4.6 cu ft. version of the washer and could not be happier. As the reviewer says, use the Turbo Wash whenever you are able; it thoroughly saturates the clothes and shaves off 10% of the washing time. Regarding the water hammer sound, I have high water pressure, and I did purchase the water hammer arrestors, however, when the installers came they told me they would not install the arrestors because that would negate the warranty, so I decided to not install them. Did NOT need them at all; the sound of the water being pumped was no louder than the top loaded this washer replaced. Cleaning is excellent; pre-treated stains come out and everything smells fresh. I do recommend you use much less soap - no need to fill the soap cup to the normal line; when the Turbo Wash is on there are plenty of suds even using as little as 2 tablespoons of detergent. Very happy with this washer: its fast, quiet, well-balanced and cleans amazingly. I have not used the steam feature yet, but I am looking forward to it. Yes, I am a laundry nerd, I admit it! LG - you made a great washer!

    I have a ridiculous obsession with laundry. I love bleach, laundry detergent, fabric softener, ext. I love the smell, cleanliness, softness. I love everything about it. I like to over use everything I just have this need to basically triple the amount of what I use. I rigged my top loader so I can watch the clothes wash with the lid open. I always reset the washer before it drains and I do it as many times as I feel. So instead of the washing cycle lasting only 16 minutes it will wash for 45 minutes. Then continue the cycle. But after watching your video I would like to purchase this set. Do you think it would be good for me? Considering my habit? How well does it wash whites? Will I be satisfied with how much product can be used?

  • @Jjcoolstuff

    @Jjcoolstuff

    9 жыл бұрын

    The normal cycle on this unit is around 45 minutes anyway. It has a clear door obviously and you can turn on the drum light to watch things. With the six motions it has it can be mesmerizing. My kids and I used to watch the laundry as it washed for the first few minutes. You don't want to use too much product, but you can always do multiple extra rinses. I really only use about a tablespoon of detergent each time. There is a bright white cycle and with the bleach compartment it will wash your whites well. I hope this helps.

    I have been a tech for 37 years and according to Consumer Reports the LG is the top rated front loader. The unfortunate thing though on front loaders is they use a cheap cast aluminum inner drum bracket called a “spider bracket”. This is consistent with about 99% of all brands. As soon as you add your first dose of laundry detergent it attacks the bracket, corroding it and causing it to break over time. Sometimes it will happen before the bearings wear out. Diagnosed a Samsung 2 year old front load washer which had this catastrophic failure. This whole problem could be solved if the manufacturers would paint the bracket before installation with an epoxy aircraft paint. Makes it impervious to the chemicals in the detergent. They have to know this, they just don’t do it for the simple reason... greed!

    Really good review. A lot of info. I'd probably add, they are a couple of inches deeper as you say, but they are a couple of inches wider (each) than standard. 27" wide vs 29" wide. It isn't a big deal to me, but mine are in the garage. I hear 4" total can be a difference in the house. Just thought I'd stress that a bit more. I'm deciding between this and the LG 4500 series set. I'm still up in the air.

    Hey, I love this video and thanks for the satisfyingly in-depth review. Does this wash a full king bedding set of comforter+blanket+sheets? Does this alert your phone when clothes are done? And does it still run fine? I'm trying to decide between this and the samsung 5.6 from the same year. The samsung doesn't have the cool light inside, but it seems like it may be less finicky about load balancing? Maybe? My 3.7cf samsung just continues after trying unsuccessfully for too long to redistribute. No errors ever. Also, and probably my most important thing, how long does this make you wait before unlocking the door when you hit pause? My 3.7 does it almost immediately.

    @Zaphariah Ephraim Problem? My samsung has no problem, when I try and do a bunch of rugs and it gets confused, it eventually just says "fuck it" and slow spins until it can rinse and finish as normal. No error, no "hey mess with heavy soggy wet things because I am retarded and can't figure out how to slow spin for some reason." Just finishes. You're saying you have this LG, and it just finishes when it gets confused too? Glad to hear it has app integration for wifi alerts. Does it do a full king set for you in one go? Like a comforter, the sheets, and one blanket?

    So far so good with the set! I did have to add a small foam pad to the inside of the dryer door to keep the open door/light button pressed down during its cycle. The clothes would press up against the door ever so slightly making the dryer think the door was ajar, when it was still locked, which resulted in the dryer stopping mid-cycle. I have them stacked and they hardly move around at all. So far, its been a great purchase.

    This is a great washing machine as well as a dryer and after a lot of research I have to say this video was the one that convince me to purchase this particular model washer and dryer. I purchased the laundry pair January 2017. Between then and now the washer itself has had two service calls for the same issue. Today, I have to go where I purchase the laundry pair and get a whole new washer because according to the retailer I can only get a floor model because they have decided to discontinue LG washers. At first I thought I just received a defected washer but I’m not so sure now. All I have to say is I’m glad that I got the extended warranty otherwise I would’ve had to come up with another $1300. In fairness to the machine it did a pretty good job of cleaning clothes my machine shut down within 15 minutes of the wash cycle and water had to be drained manually. Primarily I bought this model washer for sheer capacity as well as its ability to determine water level and time of wash.

  • @Jjcoolstuff

    I’m sorry to hear you’ve had these issues. That’s certainly not been my experience or I wouldn’t have recommended them so highly. It also sounds like you are working with a poor retailer. sprinkleonthesparkle I'm guessing you mean front loaders in general. These washers use plenty of water and your clothes get very clean. Maybe you were using the wrong cycle or something. My kids and I constantly put muddy dirty clothes in these and they come out very clean. We do occasionally use the prewash if the clothes are very dirty to wash off the excess dirt first. But it's far from just rolling around in a semi wet ball. The dryer also has a temperature sensor and you can adjust it to not get your clothes so dry if you'd prefer. Ours never come out too dry and smelling burned. Occasionally they will come out not quite dry enough if it's just one or two things in there, but you can increase the amount of dryness on the sensor and all is good.

    I am in need of a new washer dryer. Looking for one that can handle a king quilt. There’s a 5.8 LG mega washer but I see this one is already huge! Thanks for your efforts and time to make this video . Your child is adorable 🥰

    How’s this going 5 years later? Doses It Still preform just as good? Have you had any major problems or fixes?

    No major problems. I had to replace the drain pump on the washer from never cleaning it out (my fault) and that was under $30 and I did it myself. The dryer also doesn’t always get towels dry if you use the towels cycle anymore. We just use other cycles and it’s fine. Not sure what’s going on there. Otherwise they are still going strong!

    @@Jjcoolstuff I have an older model but you should check the a hot air outflow thing. The one inside can build up lint as well as the connection going outside to get rid of the hot air. You probably need to clean that. The tool works with a normal drill and costs like $15

    crushu2D i absolutely agree i got a uk LG frontloader with 11kg 6 motion direct drive and spins both directions depending which way is balanced, And its worth every penny. But because mine is newer it has a different but simular finish tone. JJCoolStuff I totally agree it's worth every penny. That's interesting that the finish is different on yours. I knew they had silver and white but didn't realize they had changed the finish on the newer models.

    Thanks for the excellent review. You've had this machine for a while. Will you comment about any mildew or moldy smell that may or may not be present. My current front loader is an older model that I am unable to get the moldy smell out of which has made me consider buying a top loading model. I like the front load but not at the cost of smelly laundry. Thanks again!

    Our washer doesn't have any mold or mildew smells that I'm aware of. There is a very small amount of mildew inside the door seal but it's very minor and nothing like our last LG. I'm guessing they've changed the materials to make them more mildew resistant. Also, we've been a lot more diligent with this model at leaving the door fully open after use. Not all laundry rooms are well suited for this though. If we do later come back and close it we almost never close it fully. We rather leave it resting against the magnetic bumper as shown in the video. These two things will make a world of difference. I do believe that once you get that moldy/mildew smell it's very hard to get rid of. Thankfully ours still looks and smells great after two years of use. I also don't use the tub cleaners. I demonstrated it in the video but haven't used it since because of the strong chemicals and smell.

    Cadon Barton Correct. Front loaders are all that has been used in Europe since the 1970's. They use much less water, care for clothes better, spin much faster so save on drying, heat their own water (more economical than using tank hot water). A decent one will last ten years plus, a Miele twenty plus.
