    Hey, all! Before you leave a comment about the NX hybrid requiring premium fuel, actually take a look at the manual, linked below. On page 722, Toyota clearly states that the minimum octane rating for the NX350h is 87. 91 is recommended and you may see a few more horsepower with it, but it is absolutely NOT required. Link to the manual: assets.sia.toyota.com/publications/en/om-s/OMF6014U/pdf/OMF6014U.pdf

    Just got mine. Pros: 1)fuel efficiency 2)drives + looks plush and robust 3)daily and short trip capable Cons: 1)sport mode falls short 2)driver's seat fit adjustments are difficult to dial in 3)steering wheel is slippery. Overall, love it. Cheers!

    Great Review!! My luxury package 22NX350 is over 1.5 yrs old. I am still in love with it since the day I pick it up! Mine was one of the early roll outs made in Japan in 2021 during the pandemic when Lexus was only shipping out 15-20 NX to USA a month! My experience might be different since my NX is all gas powered. I haven’t noticed the loud vacuum noise on my NX lol. I wish the NX has a bigger gas tank too! But I have noticed the gas lasts longer if I don’t drive with a heavy foot. I commute 60 miles a day and can gain up to 3 more days of driving before filling up, which is about 8 days! I haven’t experienced the faulty handshake with Apple & ATT you mentioned but the problem I have is the sound (when I’m listening to music) from the speakers. It losses the bass after a phone call… I have to turn off/on the infotainment for the Mark Levinson speakers to reset and go back to normal. I’m not sure if anyone else has this problem? Other than that, everything runs amazing and absolute pleasure to own!

  • @joshjamescars

    @joshjamescars

    10 ай бұрын

    Hello! Yes, your 350 turbo has the 8-speed (I believe) transmission which makes a difference. The vacuum cleaner sound comes from the hybrid having a single-speed planetary gear-set transmission which is designed to keep the car in the most efficient gearing ratio at all times. So it’s a trade off, the turbo will sound better and have a more sporty drive, but the hybrid gets 37mpg and for me the efficiency won out. Also the speaker issue is weird! I would definitely take that back to Lexus, that sounds like a software issue to me where the software is glitching out after a call. The fact that they all work once you restart it is good as it’s not a hardware issue. But be sure to do it sooner rather than later while you’re still in warranty! Thanks for watching and cheers!!

    Nice to see your thorough 6 month review.& pleased you are still pleased with it , well mostly anyway. I was sold on the quality and refinement of the 350h the first test drive. As you say it’s a little small in the rear but for 2 people it’s more than adequate. I was very impressed with the build quality and comfort for the driver. We have previously owned MB, Honda & VW & Audi most recently & considered all of them when settling on a Lexus. The MB had an awful inside seating view, imho it felt like the sides were up around your ears, & I’m 5’11” the seats were not to my liking nor the instrument operation. One big rotary knob really, The Honda was very nice, good quality but the handling was very numb & in comparison to all. The VV was the same car as we had so would have been a slightly newer model, yes it’s got extras such as acc, lane assist, all the nav features & entertainment system but the seats were not even electric. I didn’t think it bothered me but it does. So imagine my delight when you referenced the quality diffenc between the Japanese made vehicles 😄. As I reside in England my Lexus app has jut advised us our 350h has just finished being built in Toyota City. (Aichi Prefecture) Japan. 😄😄😄😄😄😄 I think we chose the right car, it’s got Electics 8 position seats which have a massage function as well as both heated & ventilated seats. That alone will keep me very happy. Look forward to your yearly video update. Will be interesting to see what reliability is like .

    I’ve very much enjoyed your videos on our way to deciding to purchase an NX 350h. We were lucky enough to get ours last week and love it. Cool tip on the VIN#. Ours is a 2024 and starts with a J so one negative avoided! We are coming from a Honda CRV non-hybrid so we are getting more miles in a tank than we did before so we actually look at the range as a positive. I do notice that the car gets loud when accelerating but also appreciate the great MPG and happy that it does get up and going nicely enough. I have not tried sport mode but making it louder on purpose is just silly. Anyway, thanks again for your videos - they really helped us make our decision to buy an NX 350h!

    Got my 2024 NX350h. Love it. I do find it a bit small though. I used to drive a RAV4 and this is smaller (the RAV was more boxy and more spacious), however, I love the luxury and the way the Lexus drives. I have the Ultra Luxury package. I should have test driven the RX but it was around $20K more (CAD). All in all, I’m very happy with my Sexy Lexy.

    Absolutely right about the engine. My 2006 Highlander Hybrid was a rocket, my 2019 Highlander Hybrid v6 was pretty good but NX350h sounds like diesel when going slow 25-30mph uphill. I use premium fuel.

    Love the 06 Highlander Hybrid. I’m trying to remember if that was the same generation I had; I had a 2012 Highlander Hybrid and it was one of my favorite cars I’ve ever owned. Same basic powertrain as the 2019 too. Also, in your NX350h, there’s no need to use premium fuel. Per the manual it runs perfectly fine on 87 octane, which makes sense since it’s the same engine out of a Rav4.

    Excellent review with discerning details and fair critique - thank you! Couple questions: Would you rate the Adaptive Cruise Control as reliable and competitively good/near-best-in-class for busy commuter city/highway traffic - especially in being better than the Rav4 Prime's ? And is the premium package with the larger 14" worth the extra cost to take advantage of anything functionally (rather than for aesthetics) ? Appreciate your thought process in these matters.

  • @joshjamescars

    @joshjamescars

    11 ай бұрын

    Hello! Thank you for the kind comment! Adaptive cruise is GREAT. There’s a big difference between Toyota safety sense 2.5 and 3.0; 3.0 is far more nuanced and natural feeling. It feels like if a human were actually driving. As far as best in class, it can’t fully drive itself like Ford’s Blue Cruise or GM’s Super Cruise, but against other adaptive cruise systems, it’s VERY good and very trustworthy. Put it this way-when I drive my 4Runner which has lane departure warning but not prevention, I end up in other lanes unintentionally because i drive the NX so much and it’s so good at keeping me in my lane. 🤣 As for the Premium package, I think it was worth it for me but exactly to your point, I like the aesthetic value it brings haha! I think the 14” screen looks better, the thematic ambient lighting is really fun, etc, etc, etc. but I don’t think it brings any major functional value. Unless the moonroof is included in it, then I would say yes. But that might be available as an a la carte item. The two things I do think are great functional add ons are the HUD and digital mirror. However, HUGE DISCLAIMER. Both of those CAN make some people carsick or nauseous so test drive if you can before you spend the money on them. Hope this was helpful!! Cheers!

    Hello Josh, love your videos. Super informative and helpful. Regarding the Nx 350h and regular 350 which one do you think will be more reliable in the long run? I currently drive a 2022 Acura Rdx aspec advance and considering switching over to the NX. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • @joshjamescars

    @joshjamescars

    Ай бұрын

    Hello! The hybrid 350h powertrain has proven long term dependability since it’s the same basic architecture as has been used in the Prius since 1997. The turbo engine in the non hybrid 350 is much newer and doesn’t have the same kind of longevity data behind it. However, if you’re coming from an RDX A-spec, you might not find the hybrid to have the same kind of driving experience you’re used to, especially if you haven’t had a hybrid before. Also, just personally I don’t think I’d take the loss on trading a 2022 RDX for an NX. I’d wait for the next generation of both.

    @@joshjamescars Really appreciate the feedback!. I love how the RDX drives and its the perfect size for me, but I've had so many issues in the past 2 years of ownership. In addition, their customer customer service is horrible. Willing to take a loss upfront to avoid most costly repairs int he future. I've only owned hondas and acuras, but I feel like the reliability is no longer there. Looking for a car I can keep for a long time. I like the size of the RX, but don't think I can get used to the next front grill.

  • @joshjamescars

    @joshjamescars

    Ай бұрын

    @naruto2575 Wow! Sorry to hear that. I’d like to say I’m surprised but Honda’s had a myriad of issues with their turbos. There have been a myriad of fuel dilution issues with the 1.5T engine that’s optional in the Civic due to a design flaw that Honda still has not addressed. I’m also disappointed to hear that their service experience hasn’t been great too. You definitely won’t find that to be the case with Lexus. Google the Lexus Covenant. I’ve found most dealers really do honor that. With all that said, I can highly recommend the NX given your situation and I would definitely go with the hybrid if reliability is your biggest concern. But again, test drive it and make sure you can live with the feeling of the hybrid drivetrain.

I’m not sure if the 350 turbo needs premium either though because it’s the same engine as is in the new Highlander and I can’t imagine a Highlander needing premium. I didn’t feel connected to the road at all. It only had 14k miles on it, but I was a huge disappointment coming from a 2017 Genesis G80. Really hoping my NX will make me a happier driver! Hello! I can understand how the RX350 was a disappointment-you have to understand not all V6s are the same. Some use it for power, others use it for smoothness and comfort. You were coming from a pretty serious sports sedan with either a turbo V6 or V8 and now you’re going down to a 4-cylinder which is not at all about driving thrill. I might think twice about it if you haven’t signed the papers yet; I think you’d be much better served with a BMW X3 or Porsche Macan.

    First, it’s actually an eCVT which is a single-speed, planetary style power split gear and very different from a traditional belt-and-pulley CVT. And second, the eCVT is why we have both the super pleasant driving nature as well as the lack of refinement in engine noise so all the comments on both topics are directly related to the eCVT if that makes sense.

    Totally agree with the locking feedback! A beep is useful. And the unlock botton is not illuminated(but the lock button is), difficult to find in the dark. Also I don't like the AC temperature dial, lacking of some ratchet feeling is difficult to know how much degree is changed, and needs to be eye-checked. The start-up page of the display will not resume to the page before shutdown, which is inconvenient. The usb music will not stay in "random all", need to be changed everytime after start-up.

    Yet another great video and review! I did one on the Venza but afraid to post it lol 😆 So funny enough I had a regular gas NX 350 loaner when I took my 2010 rx for service and I did a comparison on Facebook.. but I did not like a lot of things and felt Venza was actually better in a certain aspects.. and as you know I don’t love my Venza. The NX road noise was so much more then the Venza would turn up the radio to 34 to try and drown it out. Materials like you said, I think could be better… the shifter was very confusing but I bet you get used to that. The door handles were fine to me but my husband hated them lol he got stuck in the car 😂. The doors on the lexus definitely feel heftier when you close them compared to the Venza. I rated the Venza Limited a better buy because of the wind and road noise on the NX. I get car sick a lot and that’s why I got rid of my 17 NX.. still made me car sick lol. I will say it is peppier then the Venza. You mentioned the X3 a lot.. I am still looking and considering them 😮 .. found a sweet M40i Brooklyn Gray.. they are giving me what I paid for my Venza, but I am scared of the BMW depreciation.. obviously the Lexus and toyota won’t have that. I absolutely agree with you and was mad to find out.. the 4cyl X3 gave me 25mpg range of 460.. Venza 44mpg range of 480 … I would have kept the X3 had I known Venza had a smaller tank. It equals out. But the Limited Venza has more accessories then the x30i.. like you said adaptive cruise control , 360 cam, HUD, ventilated seats.. but boy the drive on a bimmer.. no one understands why us BMW lovers sink our money into it unless you are gear head and love cars! The M40i I am looking at has everything but ventilated seats… I agree with you, BMW needs to add more standard for the price. To get cooled seats at a cheap price in Toyota makes no sense why you can’t in a luxury premium car like the M40i.

    Omg!! First of all you should totally post it! Then send me a link so I can get to know you! ❤️ Also, as for the X3 I actually totally get it with the M40i. What I don’t understand are people who buy the non-M40 (The 30i I think?). That’s where I don’t think the X3 makes sense at all. You may also want to wait a few more months, I know a new X3 is right on the horizon so rather than flip now and end up with a totally out of date car (like my friend LOL). As long as they don’t get rid of the inline-6. As for the NX350 non-hybrid. I HATE IT. I literally hate the turbo-4 that Toyota is putting in their new cars. They sound terrible and I get that they’re trying to reduce tailpipe emissions and such but not a worthwhile compromise. If I wasn’t buying a hybrid I’d buy a Porsche Macan or X3 M40i over that any day. On that note, I need to make another video because I just put down a deposit on something else with Lexus that I’m SO excited about but probably won’t be ready for another year or more at the current pace they’re moving LOL. Anyhow. Thanks for watching as always! And seriously can’t wait to see your Venza review!

I still have to download the software you told me about for the editing.. so this will be unedited lol As far as the X3 M40i.. the 2024 has no changes to it, so I don’t mind. Plus it takes a price increase every year. They are trying to give me $1000 off too with tint, a new grill, and free delivery.. Lol The 2025 is when it gets the new system, which I don’t like first year models … so many problems. I see that going on a lot with the 2023 RX. Oh my gosh.. I am excited… I am guessing a 450h?? Hello! I recently purchased a 2025 NX 350h premium. It’s advertised at 38 mpg highway and 41 city. When traveling on the highway, I average 38 mpg. However, during my daily commute around the city, I average about 36 mpg on eco and 34 on normal. The Lexus app tells me I drive excellent and I use premium gas. Can you think of any other reason as to why I’m not hitting the 41 mpg in the city? I live in Louisiana so the weather is far from cold at the present.

    Hello! There are two things here-first, brand new cars (assuming since you have a 2025) always need a little bit of time to break in and for the computers to get used to your driving style. But also, I personally never manage to hit the EPA ratings. Also, I’m next door to you in Texas and it’s properly HOT here and so running the AC can also take a toll on fuel economy.

The only caveats I’ll throw in there are if you’re one of my European viewers (so your cultural norms may be different) and or you live in a dense urban core where the vehicle’s footprint is more important than occupant comfort.

If not, the Highlander Hybrid Platinum has all the same features as my NX (HUD, digital mirror, etc.) and is also around $55K. Plus you’ll get a pano roof and captains chairs. And the interior in the Highlander Platinum is actually nicer than the NX IMO.

As far as the handshake issue I think you should try a different carrier T-Moble / or Verizon if you can. have a question for you I drive in NYC say about 200 miles a year yes that little. Hello! To be honest with you, driving a car that little is bad for ANY car. It’s like buying a Rolex and leaving it on a shelf-the internals don’t get properly lubricated and worn in and at 200 miles annually, you won’t even go through one tank of gas so the gas goes bad and your engine can seize. The exterior and interior will probably be in pristine condition but that won’t matter if the mechanicals under the hood go bad from lack of use. If you really do honestly drive 200 miles a year, I wouldn’t even buy a car. It’s a depreciating asset. Why not just rent a nice car when you need one? It would literally be stupid to pay for an entire car to use it 200 miles a year. You live in NYC, put that $40-50K into property or something.

    Hello! Yes, it can be a valid concern, and the one they’ll go after is the one under the car which thieves have figured out how to slice out quickly. To protect it, you can get what’s called The Cat Shield. Go google it, it’s a steel plate that bolts on and essentially makes stealing it too much agro for thieves who want to get in and get out fast. Now, I personally haven’t had any issue with any of the hybrids we’ve owned but I admittedly live in a very safe bubble; we live in a gated community and anywhere the car gets left for prolonged periods is also gated and or patrolled (work, airport, etc.). Depending on how bad the crime in your area is (I’m saying this as you note that a few cars on your block have been hit) I might think about whether you even want to spend the money on a luxury car. Especially if you aren’t going to keep the car in a locked garage at home, I’d probably buy a nicely optioned Venza or Rav and throw the extra cash into a high yield savings account or something.

    Thanks for your thoughful reviews. I feel that your ambivalence about the NX is somewhat related to your purchase of a 350h rather than a 450h+. The 450h+ is appreciably and noticeably quicker making the 450h+ much more fun, and resulting in the e-CVT/4 cylinder settling down more quickly when merging. Every 450h+ has supurb Japanese build quality but most 350h's do not. I purchased a 450h+ with all of the toys a year ago when the full US tax credit was still in force (a definite help!). Its EV range is more than sufficent for my daily drives, yet one obtains very good fuel economy on the road with no range anxiety. Re: Your revisit with the 2022 RX350, I had a chance to get back into one as a loaner recently and although there is no denying the positive attributes of the last generation RX (I happily owned one), I found the more nimble and quicker response of my NX450h+ to be the more satisfying drive. Bigger is better only if one requires the space. And, the Infotainment systems are leagues apart, as you also mentioned, so I have no desire to go back. Just yesterday I had some passengers and they immediately volunteered strong positive compliments about the vehicle. As you say, one's personal circumstances will lead to a determination between the two, but price aside the 450h+ is the better automobile compared to the 350h on an absolute basis. Thanks for listening.

    Hello! I have a whole video on why I didn’t buy the 450h+ here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6pkt7iYcbW8o9Y.html and while I understand your points, I have no regrets about choosing the 350h over the 450, and would take all the things I dislike about my 350h over the 450h any day just because I don’t think it’s worth the price without the tax credit. Even with the tax credit, I still thought it was a little too expensive because we only paid $30K for our Rav Prime and that’s basically the same car underneath. I personally couldn’t swallow more than twice the price just for the Lexus interior. But to be clear, that’s solely based on what I value in a car. Also, I want to clarify the note about me being ambivalent toward the car. I love my NX even though it may not have come off as such in the video. I try my best to weight my thoughts equally positive and negative because I think I owe it to folks to give equal consideration to both sides, and that might have come off as me being lukewarm on the car, which I am definitely not. That all said, I do agree with you that the plug-in hybrids are fantastic, which is why we’ll be trading in the NX for a TX550h+ plug in hybrid which will have the same V6 as the old RX (so ultra refined) but with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain which will give it incredible power. Lexus says 409 horsepower, with all the electric torque it’ll likely be near 500 pound feet, plus 30mpg and 33 miles of EV range. Which will be more than I’d like but only $15K more than a loaded NX450h. Video on that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKdh2MywiLjKc9o.html

You really need to close it a little harder for the door to be fully closed. Also, if you used 87 Octane gas, would it reduce the fuel economy? • @joshjamescars

    @joshjamescars

    Ай бұрын

    Thank you! The door close issue may be because of the gaskets that Lexus puts around the doors for added sound insulation. If you look around the door sill and compare what you see to a Toyota, you’ll see more seals and other rubber insulation which can kind of make the doors harder to just push closed like on other cars. My GX is the same way. I wouldn’t say it’s hard but I definitely have to push the door for it to close and latch. Also for the gas, no engine knocking and you shouldn’t see any difference in fuel economy. Remember that the engine and drivetrain is straight out of a Rav4 hybrid which gets even better fuel economy than the NX on regular gas (due to the Rav being slightly lighter). So run premium if it makes you feel better but as the manual states, the minimum required is 87. When Lexus cars (like my GX) actually require 91 octane, they’re explicit about it in the manual and on the fuel filler door.

    @MrSonnyTa I just looked back at the manual to verify. It says use of fuel with an octane rating LOWER than 87 can cause engine knock which can lead to damage. But anything that is 87 and above is fine. Here in TX, our regular fuel is 89. The only place I know of where regular is lower than 87 is at altitude in Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. In that case, I’d use midgrade. I traded in this NX for a GX in August of last year. Wanted to get the last V8 Toyota SUV before it went away and was okay letting the NX go since we also have a Rav4 Prime that I use for daily driving now!

    I have, and personally I think it’s garbage. Not because it’s not a good car but for me the RX is a non-starter without a V6 engine in it because of all the same commentary I have about the NX. But even moreso in the RX which was always designed to be a refined, serene, and effortlessly powerful cruiser, it’s ruined by a lineup of only 4 cylinder engines. You can pump a lot of power out of a 4-cylinder but there’s no way around the lack of refinement. It’s why I think we see Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infiniti, and Hyundai/Kia sticking with V6s in their midsize crossovers. And why others who have gone with turbo-4s like Volvo in the XC90 and Subaru in the Ascent don’t have nearly as good a driving feel to them. Because they’re wringing out little 4-cylinder engines in cars that are too big for them. That all said, I have a video coming up this Friday on what I will be buying next because it has a V6, though. So stay tuned for that ;)

The Crown Signia is going to give you the nicest interior but will be loud and underpowered based on my experience driving the newest RX350h which it is basically identical to mechanically. It’s also a midsize which has a much bigger footprint than the other two. The Rav4 Prime is fast and can run on pure electric but is way too expensive for a Rav IMO, plus you NEED to be able to plug it in at home to make it worth the price. And the NX I’ve talked about a lot in this video. For me it would probably be the NX or Crown Signia.

    just curious, but what are/were you expectations for this engine? I know a lot of car reviewers on youtube like to knock on the cvt drone and the struggling sound of the 4cyl (esp in a heavy vehicle). Their concerns are fair and valid. HOWEVER, if "you"/other reviewers are going to complain about it, then why not voice what you would have wanted. Did you want a turbo 4? Inline 6 (n/a or forced induction)? Would you have preferred a throatier exhaust note? Would you then make a comment about the fuel mileage? Consider the vehicle also, from an engineering perspective; how would you install the engine you would have wanted along with the hybrid system. Any thoughts thereafter about reliability when slapping on turbo/supercharger? Yes, I'm fully aware that Toyota has gone with turbos for their 4 cyl.. so we'll have to see how well that does. The one thing I've learned personally and from mechanics more knowledgeable than myself (I'm a 17 year technician at a German dealership) is that there's "no free lunch".

  • @joshjamescars

    @joshjamescars

    5 ай бұрын

    Hello! Before I get into answering I want to set the record straight on what my dislike actually was. You’re incorrectly assuming I have a problem with the engine itself. I did not say that anywhere in this video. I think the engine is fine and necessary in the hybrid for it to get such good fuel economy. The problem I actually stated in the video is the lack of refinement (mitigation and elimination of NVH) on Lexus’ part (and thus I think it’s pretty clear that’s what I would want to see them improve). Historically, Lexus would go to the ends of the earth to isolate out noise from their engines. They were an early pioneer of thick felt lining in the wheel wells, multiple redundant rubber gaskets around the engine, door frames, and the ES Ultra Luxury has specifically designed etc. to isolate the cabin and its occupants. And it worked. My 2023 GX460, for example, is bank vault silent inside even though it has the same 1UR-FE V8 out of a Tundra. So the fact that the NX isn’t significantly more refined than a Rav4 hybrid (I also own a Rav4 Prime) is a problem because if I’m not getting that luxury class refinement, what exactly is one paying the premium for? Now, I understand that adding all kinds of sound deadening adds weight which would reduce fuel economy. But I’d be okay with 34 or 35mpg instead of 37. The refinement is also just one piece of the larger problem I have with Lexus right now, which is that their cars are no longer meaningfully different or better than their Toyota counterparts. The materials in the NX, the new RX, TX, etc., are also subpar compared to what’s in my GX. Thinner, lighter, cheaper plastics; lower tolerances for final assembly nowadays, etc. As someone who’s owned 10 Toyota/lexus vehicles over the past 15 years or so, it’s my opinion that Lexus is no longer the luxury heavyweight it used to be but merely a more premium alternative to Toyota. And, shortly after doing this video, I ended up selling this NX (for almost exactly what I paid for it).

    Great video.....I just think Lexus cut too many corners to save a couple of cents on gas which made this SUV less appealing and annoying. If one is willing to dish out this kind of cash for a car, saving a couple of extra dollars on gas consumption is not the reason to buy it. People are still purchasing the compotators offers which are bigger, more luxurious and more refined. Lexus focused too much on efficiency which is only slightly better if so.

  • @joshjamescars

    @joshjamescars

    11 ай бұрын

    Thank you! And I have to point out a few things in response. 1. To your point about dishing out this kind of cash, $50K isn’t a lot of money when you look at the market for new cars today. The average new vehicle price in the US is around $50K today. My NX cost less than a fully loaded regular, non-Grand Highlander ($54K MSRP), less than a fully loaded 4Runner ($56K MSRP), about $5-10K less than a comparably equipped RX which shares the same engine and drivetrain (about $60-65K MSRP) and a good $15-$20K less than a Euro luxury compact crossover (let’s say $65-70K for a comparably equipped X3 or Q5) Which is why I don’t consider it to be a luxury car and so I don’t really think it competes with luxury cars. It’s kind of in a class of one because no one else does a premium/luxury full hybrid. All that said, I absolutely agree with you that Toyota/Lexus could have done more in the refinement department and I hope they improve on it. However, after seeing the new TX and GX last night that also look really cheap inside IMO, I’m not sure Lexus is going in that direction which is a shame.

    I don't understand ... nx competitors like X3 or GLC, at least in Europe, are a bit cheaper compared to the same equipment, and taking into account the size, the differences are marginal, and in my opinion, in terms of quality, both inside and BMW (quite recently a 2-year-old BMW series 5 burned down near my town, self-ignition so much when it comes to BMW, a car that is only premium by name) and GLC are worse made than Lexus NX. For me, a premium engine is one that is reliable and durable. And it has NX. The sound does not bother me, there is no car that is quiet when it accelerates hard, maybe LS, S class etc. Although I agree that the Lexus could have just quieted it down better. Especially now, German premium brands are a thing of the past, only the name and a million screens remain with the interior glowing at night like an 80's disco :) Anyway for me, in general, there are no real premium cars anymore, only tricking people into strange, overpriced cars with lots of unnecessary technology. If I had known that the GLC or BMW had such reliable engines as Lexus/Toyota and all the rest I would have reconsidered their choice, but I prefer a louder engine and real reliability, so I did not hesitate for a long time to choose Lexus.

  • @joshjamescars

    @joshjamescars

    In Europe you all pay a huge premium for both Lexus and Toyota and I’m not sure why. I believe it’s a combination of the German cars being “domestic” to the EU and the EU having tariffs on imports. In any case, here in the US, Lexus is substantially less than BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche. Also I agree with you that BMW interiors are cheap feeling inside. MB and Porsche do better interiors than Lexus, though. And I don’t think I said the Euro cars are more reliable. Lexus is always going to be more reliable then any of its Euro peers. :) Hence why I buy Lexus as well.

  • @joshjamescars

    Dislike #2 is all about the unpleasant engine noise. I don’t know if you know how it really works, but the CVT (which isn’t a real, belt-driven CVT but a planetary-style single speed reduction gear set) itself doesn’t make noise, but it creates the vacuum cleaner-like drone of the engine due to the way it handles power output from the engine, which is what I mentioned. The turbo engine on the other hand, is mated to a true, cogged automatic with 8 gears and that’s why you have a more traditional delivery of power and sound output where you hear the engine revving up while stepping from the “bottom” of each of gear to the “top” before shifting to the next gear, from 1-8. The single speed reduction gear, on the other hand is a single (1) speed that can create and variate ratios infinitely so it doesn’t have gears to step from and so it’s all one noise that just varies slightly in its frequency. That all said, the turbo most definitely sounds better but that comes at a 13MPG difference between the 350 turbo and the 350h and for me, the hybrid efficiency is worth the trade off since this isn’t my only car and only used for daily commuting.
