    I once had an absurd commission for a Suess style rhyme-story about Jew, The Scottish Ninja. He was a Puerto Rican orphan adopted by a Japanese rabbi living in Scotland. He ate a lot of haggis empanadas, then adventured with his pet slime, Fluffy, and his effiminate vegan werewolf friend. (Who happened to be a gigachad and accomplished milf-hunter.) Off on a quest to find the legendary Kilt of Muramasa.

One side tells me that the show, despite the absurdities, was made with good intentions… meanwhile the other side tells me that this is an absurdly (maybe intentional?) poor-written satire. I unapologetically like the theme of ‚unity from different beliefs‘ as this is supposed to be a good message along the occasional posts… but I can’t disregard certain executions that makes this too… again absurd to be NOT deliberate (I‘m mean it’s weird to call a character Taekwonhindu or Ninjew and NOT intending it comedical and/or parodical) What do you think? It's a no from me because the religious elements come off as purely cosmetic. If you switched the names and pitched it as a show about heroes that represent the STEM disciplines, you wouldn't have to change a single thing. The closest we really get to the characters actually representing the religions they follow is that throwaway conversation at the beginning where they talk about how boring their religious education was, and the Hindu girl doesn't even have anything to say there. It kind of comes off as them not really caring for their own religions when you frame it like that. Hell, in two seconds of research, I can think of a way you'd make this at least vaguely educational about the different religions they represent. The premise of the episode is that it's their "day off," so you have them compare or even argue about how they all traditionally spend their different days of rest, whether it's Sunday, Saturday, Friday, or the 11th day of the month. Then you end it with the punchline that it's actually Tuesday, so they can all just go to the carnival together. It sets up that they have individual differences in their beliefs, but they can still find ways to come together without compromising or belittling any of their faiths. It's still something you'd have to be cautious about and probably wouldn't work regardless, but it would show an effort that this pilot distinctly doesn't have.

    @stuffynosepatrol I think the problem is more that the main characters are all religious and (at least in this episode) the bad guys were scientists. If it is just a one off and there are other atheists in the show who are good then I would agree with you but there just isn't enough context and I feel like weve had enough hyper-religious propaganda in kids media over the past couple years for it to be understandable why people wouldn't immediately give this show the benefit of the doubt

  • @stuffynosepatrol

    @stuffynosepatrol

    5 ай бұрын

    @@ooppoop4522 the show never states that the scientists are atheists, that's just a joke Saber makes. I don't think this show is at all hyper religious or counts as propaganda, it doesn't push the message of any one religion and it seems to portray every religious belief as just as valid as one another. I think people might be reading too much into this, villains who are "mad scientists" are a staple of many children's cartoons. They likely just added them in since mad scientists are a generic children's bad guy. overall people saying this show is propaganda or something seem to just be jumping to conclusions because they have had negative experiences with religious media in the past.

  • @ooppoop4522

    5 ай бұрын

    @@stuffynosepatrol you could be right. I'm just saying that there are a few things that leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth still.. The scientists being the bad guys is just one of them. Yes, you are right, mad scientists being a common villain trope in cartoons which is why I said it's hard to judge with little context... but there are other small things like that which point to this being a little 'iffy' - the Christian character being the defacto leader who is introduced first and usually positioned at the front of the group. - all the other characters wearing traditional clothing whilst he is dressed in more regular clothes (suggesting that christianity is the norm). This feels very othering towards the other characters. - as someone else lower in the comments pointed out, partnering Judaism with a group of assassins known for being secretive and mysterious - the Muslim and the Hindu characters being the only two that show some sort of supernatural power (telepathy and... honestly, I'm not really sure what the cloud clones really were but it did invoke this strange sense of mysticism), while the Jewish and Christian characters seemed somewhat more like regular fighters.. I cant quite explain why these are all problems individually but just with everything added together it feels a little bit... bad? Outdated? Icky?

    I went into this worried it would be an example of "bad perennialism", that promotes a spirituality that takes the least common denominator from various religions for a sort of feel-good "Be Nice" message, while ignoring what makes each faith tradition unique. But I guess I didn't need to worry about that, since it never gets that deep, and somehow religion plays a very small role in the story itself, other than the character origins. It was a short clip, so hopefully in later episodes you get some character building that explores the faith traditions of the various characters.

    It's kind of weird how this genuinely has potential to be a somewhat good religion-focused animated show, considering those are almost non-existent. The art style has something going on for sure, the animation isn't too bad as well. Just tone down the cringe and put effort into the quality and sending a good message, and it could have been an interesting show about how there are different religions in this world, but they should all coexist in peace and work towards a mutual goal of humanity's prosperity. They definitely ruined it by making science the villainous side. If that's what the creators genuinely believe in, I'm out either way.

    Here's a rough breakdown on some of the religions: 1. Christianity believes in the Holy Trinity of God the Father,God the Son,and the Holy Spirit. Basically three in one. Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God. 2. Islam believes that there is one God,Allah. Muslims believe Jesus was a holy prophet but not God's son. They don't believe in the Holy Trinity like Christians do because they believe that Trinity means that Christians are worshipping three gods instead of one. 3. Judaism believes in God and the Trinity (as far as I know), but they don't believe Jesus is the Messiah. 4. Hindus believe in and pray to multiple gods.They also believe in reincarnation. Hinduism has many,many gods. This isn't a perfect breakdown butI tried my best. 😅

He wields a holy Katana that he uses to literally slice out the demons within someone’s soul. And he also has Sharingan eyes because he’s from Japan, and haha funny anime reference

    if this show included Gilgamesh as a sort of connecting point it'd make a lot more sense. I know that sounds like a joke but if you read the epic of Gilgamesh and do some research on different religions including Abrahamic and native American ones you can find a surprising number of similarities like great floods and mass extinctions and beings from on high creating and eventually casting out mankind its kinda shnuts

    I'm from a Jewish/ Iran/ serbian and Osage mixed family. We have people from Italy, Turkey and Germany who are Christian, and I myself am a Jewish agnostic who is trying out different religions and faiths, including Wicca. What I'm trying to say is there is no way on earth I could be insulted by this show because I can't take it seriously. What I AM insulted by is the blatant propaganda aimed at children. Don't lie to kids that religions from around the world will be able to see eye to eye. because in almost every religious scripture, they say they are the only TRUE religion. It's why I became agnostic in my teens. It's also very rude timing to release this considering what's going on right now. Sorry about the rant, but instead of the focus on religion they should be focused on being good people, South Park is way better. Love your vids Saber.

    I agree that it's a lie. However, I think that presenting people of different religions not fighting each other, but instead being friends, isn't inherently bad or propaganda. It's very idealistic, but most kids shows are idealistic like that. Maybe it should've released years earlier or later, though.
