    I find it amusing how in 1940 the animators were like "well, we can't draw scantily clad women, the censors will never allow it, so let's use scantily clad horses for our innuendo; there's no way someone is gonna interperet an actual horse as sexy." I long for those days of blissful innocence again.

    They weren’t innocent. Have you seen the one with the stripper lizard? They hired an actual stripper to perform for them so they could draw the movements right. The truth is that before Disney movies and Hanna-Barbara cartoons made people associate animation with children's entertainment, most cartoons were made for adults and had a lot of racey material.

    I quite frankly don't that little moment of the dark horse to be all that racist on its own. It's just a 10 second black caricature in a cartoon where the whole point seems to be female caricature. The real issue is that this black caricature was everywhere at the time. Cheap humour of the time.

  • @TECH097
    @TECH0976 ай бұрын

    "WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING???" Simple: playing to the audience. It was the 30/40s version of 'edgy humor' that was all sorts of normalized by studios and was expected of the directors to include. There's a reason it's now realized that it was so jarringly included, if they wanted to be racist they coulda gone full racist! But nah just "we need another gag" "uh i dunno race?" and boom, the audience was sated sadly.

    Woooo! Sabercat's back! In all seriousness though, I think Covid-19 isn't exactly an aberration, and we had just been lucky to have gone on so long without such a large scale outbreak. It's hard to imagine but polio was barely 100 years ago, and that lasted for 39 years (1916-1955). My grandmother in 90 now, and she experienced it first hand, talking about how there would always be spikes in the summer, and how she would be shut inside (pre-A/C) for her own safety. Viral outbreaks happen. They happen all the time, all over the world. We've just gone long enough to start taking for granted that measures could be taken without disrupting the status quo.

    Influenza was worse, but nobody ever seems to talk about that. Unlike most contagions, (Barring HIV) it took out people all over the world en masse seemingly indiscriminately regardless of age group, region, overall health conditions or any demographic you can think of. But we harp on this thing that predominately took out asthmatics and others with underlying health issues with a pretty high recovery rate from those who are pretty robust and in the prime of their lives. Does no one see the irony in that?

    Idk, felt pretty much normal to me. You can't really blame 40's for being 40's. Also, I don't think making jokes of a race is inherently bad as long as it's not with ill intentions. Context matters.

    @@poochyenajones1362 Ehh. Reducing a race (or any group, for that matter) constantly to nothing but a goofy punchline does seep into the way people view them irl. It makes it a lot harder for those in the 'punchline' group to be taken seriously.

    I feel like the real racism was that the Dark Horse just popped up for one black joke and then disappeared entirly.

    @Saberspark You should watch c.o.w. boys of moomesa. Anthro cows riding non anthro horses in a world with anthro horses and non anthro cows. The 90’s were a riot!
