My grandfather had two Black mules about 1400 lbs i have seen them pull a mule drawn cycle mower until they were almost white salt coming out of them. They made sure them mules were feed good and plenty of fresh water. You do this for fun they did it to make a living!

If I remember an explanation I heard years ago the use of the spreaders from the hame ring changes the functional length of the inside line so that the mules should walk slightly further apart. It was said to save you having to change the location of the buckle on the inside line. Used for working a narrow implement and then switching to a wagon with a larger double tree. It was to allow the animals to work straighter and not be walking slightly tilted in or out. Not sure if true but that is what I remember reading/hearing when I started learning about harnessing. My mentor had me set one set of my lines for my cultivator (narrow evener) and a different set one hole different for the wagon ( wide evener). Great video always interesting to see how different people harness differently. I use a western harness and not a D ring which I think you are using.

You’re right in your thinking on spreaders. They do just that…”spread” your team. That is if you just throw in the spreaders and make no other adjustments. I use the short spreaders and then pull my buckles back, which basically pulls my team back in to their original place and allows use of the spreaders which in this particular case is for the reasons I mentioned in the video. Also it allows your check lines buckle to be closer to their hips instead of close to their hames. It does allow maybe a small easier pull for the lines and definitely allows the team to move a little more freely when going in and out of the woods. So that’s kinda helpful but idk if I’ll keep using them or not yet. In times past I’ve used them just as you’ve mentioned and used em on a wagon to spread on out vs having to adjust my lines. But typically I just assume adjust my lines. It’s pretty quick and easy to do for me. My harness is a Tennessee mule harness. Box britchen or some folks call it basket britchen. D ring harness or New England harness has the D ring in the traces where the belly bands and traces intersect. It has its own advantages for certain things. Back when I had horses I used regular western brtichen harness as you say you have. But I do greatly prefer this box britchen harness by far. And especially for mules. It fits a mules hind end better imho. And it def holds a load back better no doubt. Anyway, thank you for commenting and watching out video! It’s good to hear from you. Leather would be more expensive for sure. Mine is made of biothane. It’s stronger than leather and is easier to keep up. Leather lines are nice tho! They mold to your hands almost. Thanks for watching my friend

Thank you sir! Ya know, once you have a system down…it doesn’t take a whole lot of extra time or energy. I mean, if I had a skidder…I’d have to fuel it up and grease it everyday too. No sir, I’m usually logging…fixing broke logging stuff, or exercising my mules lol. There’s always something to do around here. And yessir, I started putting my collars on this way once my sweat pad clips started coming off because of me opening and closing my collars so much. Now…I just throw it over their heads and be done with it. It’s easier this way and don’t have to worry about the clips anymore. Take care my friend and thank you for the kind words! Hi I had this old man from Missouri tell me he tied his mules up with a bailing string and a snap hook, the trick was he put turpentine on the string and they wouldn't mess with it. Might make a good video if it really work's.

Thank you sir! The blinders are to keep the mules from getting distracted or spooked by whatever they’re pulling mostly. They also double as eye protection getting around in the woods. But it’s mostly for distractions. Some animals work well enough without blinders and some can’t focus without em: make sense? Also, pigeon wing blinders are made for mules whereas horses wear square shapes blinders usually. And that’s because a mule has an eye set more so on the side of its head. And they can see around behind themselves all but about 4” of the middle of their backs. That’s one reason they’re more sure footed for riding. And how come they’re such accurate kickers. Is because of their peripheral vision. Pigeon wing blinders cover more of their peripheral compared to square blinders likes on most horses. Did this answer your question brother? Okay that makes sense, I also watch Cowboys rounding up cattle and a lot of them use mules, they claim they are more smart than a horse, they learn fast for trail riding, rounding other horses and even more stamina than a horse. It makes sense for eye protection and keeping them calm, thank you for the explanation.

When I was a kid if we was off the mts on soft ground, my dad wud pull the shoes off our mules an work em barefoot.. claimed it tuffened their feet. Seemed to work.. you ever heard of that.?

Nah I haven’t. Two reasons to shoe is 1. For wear such as a animal that works on the road a lot and their feet will wear quicker than they grow. And 2. Is for traction. Which is why I personally shoe my mules. Because if they go to slipping and sliding on ya, they’ll safety up and won’t pull hard for you. Thanks a bunch for watching and the questions.

As always your videos are interesting, now I've been told that you always work or get on the left side of a horse, you rigged up Alice on the right side isn't that going against the left side rule? Thanks for sharing

For instance, the left mule will dress from the left and the right mule..from the right. Does that make sense? Now saddle stock, yes you saddle from the left side. What is the strap you put over the hames used for

Hey Ms Thomas! Ok, so that strap is called an “over check” strap. It basically keeps them from getting their heads down to low and getting into mischief but beyond that, it also aids in helping them learn to pull better also. Because if they get their heads down to low, they’ll transfer too much weight from their backend to their fronts and loose their balance and stumble more. It encourages them to squat their rear ends if that makes sense. And encourages a good safe headset. Make sense? Thanks for the question and I hope I’ve answered it for you.
