    Years ago when I still lived in Bavaria I did a lot of logging for firewood with a single horse, the team mate waiting at the wagon. Snaking the logs through the dense forest I had to jump from left to right and vice versa ever so often. Can't do that anymore. Your mule is really a willing animal, those logs are rather heavy for a mule that caliber. Good that the distance is not so big and that you give her frequent stops. By the way, I could NEVER start my Stihl chainsaw with just one or two pulls.

    Thank you sir for sharing a quick story with me! I always enjoy hearing other’s experiences. Yes, some of these logs were a pretty good load for sure. Butttt, that’s where we’re at right now is learning the bigger loads with good form and technique. Then, when I put them back together we can move the bigger loads as a team with confidence. As far as the saws, most of mine will start on one pull after they’re warm anyway lol. Some Stihl’s will start better than others tho. I’ve ported and polished almost every one of mine. And done exhaust work on them, to make them really run good. Most of my saws are older saws. But still do me a good job. Thanks for all the kind words my friend and for always watching

  • @zachodom7486

    @zachodom7486

    I do. I use them quiet often actually especially on low grade stuff or if I am ground skidding and wanna pull doubles. I haven’t used em on this particular job as much as I have in past. You use the tool that is best for the job at the moment. It doesn’t make sense to drive grabs if you don’t need too. If you watch some of my earlier videos tho, you’ll see me using grabs. Head grabs, and even double grabs on big timber. You just use the tool that best suits the situation. If that makes sense. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend

    If you’re not hooked to a tongued implement then the britchen is useless. Fact, my pa always had “plow harness” on his mules and it didn’t even have a britchen at all. Just back bands, trace chains, and hames. If you’re using a plow or log cart with a tongue..then you’d need a britchen. They’re use to being worked in the woods, and have had limbs, wood chips, and a whole lot of other crap hitting them lol. So they’re use to it. Thanks for watching and commenting! And the kind words. • @zachodom7486

    @zachodom7486

    9 күн бұрын

    Probably the easiest way to hitch them tandem one in front of the other would be with pulley ropes. You can buy these from various Amish suppliers. But you’re gonna have to have two sets of lines to drive them. And it is harder to drive two single animals tandem than it is two teams tandem. Because when in a team, they have each other to steady the team. But single, they can twisted up pretty quick. Not saying you couldn’t do it. It’ll just take some practice to get use to it and then use to it. Anyway, hope this helps you understand. And maybe I’ll do a little video of my mules using the pulley ropes. That would be fun. There are advantages and drawbacks to using the tandem hitch. But anyway, I hope this helps at least a little. Thank you for the question. And thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please!

  • @zachodom7486

    @zachodom7486

    Well, mainly because my off mule Alice..hasn’t been worked to one line. Because she’s always been on the off side. And I’m working on getting both of my mules to where when I say “come up,” to ease up into it and get the load on their hips, then shove on! It’s easier to teach this particular thing with two lines vs one line. Now, Kate, my lead mule is broke to one line really good. I just didn’t have enough timber cut to justify all the swapping back and forth yday. But I do prefer working to one line, especially when they’re right. They’re learning to really pull hard now and stay with it….so I intended to introduce one thing at a time especially with Alice since she’s never been driven with one line. Thanks for watching my friend and commenting. Always good to hear from you.

  • @zachodom7486

    Well, it’s mainly because mules are more popular south. And back when people worked mules for a living everyday…leather was very expensive and chain was easier to come by. @@jacobkennedy112well, mainly is weight because it’s lighter yet stronger due to the chains carrying the weight instead of the wood. The wood is just for spreading the chain apart. But also, because there isn’t a pivot point like a single tree or double it’s more stable and you don’t get any isolations or rocking side to side in your evener. Be it single or double. Also on a double stretcher, since there is no pivot point per say…when one mule gets ahead of the other, it will get more of the load discouraging that type of behavior. Plus back in the old days before steel came out, it was a lot stouter using chain with wood spreaders vs using traditional wood single or double trees. So two main things are 1. Strength to weight ratio and 2. Less rocking (or see sawing on a double). And on the single stretchers it will help the mule or horse turn more square because it’ll put more pressure on one side of the collar in a turn vs a traditional single tree with a pivot point. So the more an animal gets worked with one, the more square they’ll turn encouraging that side stepping motion if you will. Does that make sense? I plan to do a video soon on this subject. Just because I’ve had some questions on it.

    @@zachodom7486 yes sir. I’ve always used stretchers working double or Steel trees single. I was thinking like you said about that being stronger before steel come out. I’ve never thought about it keeping them square though. I’ll definitely have to try that one out single.
