Greetings. The answer is X = -3. We determine the value of X by recognizing and or rather converting 1/8 to 2^-3. Now, from the expression given, we have 2^-3=2^X. Therefore, since the bases,2, are equal. X=-3.

Another interesting thing: log base 2 of 1/8 = log base 10 of 1/8 divided by log base 10 of 2, which also equals log base e of 1/8 divided by log base e of 2. Handy to remember if you need to convert a log in one base to another. The base 2 log of 8 is log base 10 of 8 divided by log base 10 of 2.

I still remember from school The log of a number is the power to which the base must be raised to get that number

I would think easier is using the difference of logarithms with the same base log2(1)-log2(2^3)=x then is 0- 3=x

Please reread Why Math Doesn't Matter by Andrew Hacker then go to your local school board and reconfigure the math curriculum into a program that will make students proficient in math that they will actually USE in their lives or at worst not disqualify them from a higher education that will develop their talent which will enhance all of our lives.

What are you talking about? ALL the math taught in high school IS used in our every day lives. The entire world runs on it. Business, Computing, Engineering, Science, Medicine, National Defense, Video Games...

75% of people around the globe is earning their money without using math at level beyond (I suppose) high school student. Standard jobs don't require to have a PhD level of math. This is a real statement. Please ask your friends, members of your family if they use higher level of math at work so often.

I looked at the problem and x=-3 popped into my head. Problem goes into my brain and answer comes out. But because I can't "show my work" I failed every algebra course I took. I ended getting a degree in history but retired as an electrical engineer. Go figure. BTW, I agree with Higgins.
