In my opinion the more focused mids of the Zoom are very useful and precious on stage (and in studio too) when there's another guitar, or a keybord, or both, it let your sound cut better through the mix.

I'm listening on really good speakers and I strangely prefer the Zoom. I actually think the Zoom would sit better in a mix and cut through much better. The Ampero was too muddy in the crunch and high gain settings. The zoom pops out.

I'm bias as I own a G3XN, but I genuinely preferred the Marshall tone on the Zoom in this clip. I love the 'less is more' ethos of Zoom with fewer amp and cabs but still plenty of choice. It's got a great UI that's easy to tweak on the fly, and zero lag in patch changes. Both of these sounded good though. Thanks for giving digital some love Andertons.

Haha, love these videos. The interplay between the two of you is great. It would be handy to have the active modeler somehow highlighted on the screen though. I have to say the Ampero sounds a bit better to me but the Zoom does have some great lead tones. Neither of these makes me regret my Quad Cortex purchase :)

Wow, what a difference - the Ampero sounds so much more open, large, transparent, better headroom, dynamic range etc. The Captain is right about these newer modelers sounding so much better then the earlier ones. And the Ampero 2 even more so. More processing power really makes a difference.

I got the Zoom G5n, although about 4 years ago. It still sounds great but things have moved on and now hasn 't quite got the quality of more modern stuff. I'm always using Neural DSP Plugins now and find going back to the Zoom pedal after that difficult.

This shootout confirmed exactly my own experience with the Zoom G5n. It sounds much, much darker than other things (like software, analogue pedals) and it can be quite challenging to dial in a very specific tone, especially with high gain, rectifier-type stuff. That said, I've had a lot of fun messing with all the dials and features and there's still a lot of stuff to experiment with, even if there's not as many settings as other modellers. I picked mine up at a relatively cheap price (~£200) and, because I'm a beginner, it really helped me learn a lot about different effects pedals, pedal chains, amp and cab sims, patches, etc. I would recommend it as a nice option for beginners looking to experiment with lots and lots of different effects without spending a huge amount of money, but I think if you're a serious musician wanting to augment your existing kit, you're going to want to get a more modern, more expensive modeller. Also, if you already have an audio interface and laptop, for the same price as the Zoom you could probably get a software solution (like Bias FX or THQ) and a stomp-box... just another option to consider.

I do like Zoom units like this. I tend to find that they have a nice range of effects based on various sources rather than being limited to a single stable (unlike Boss products) and be pretty good value for money. Unfortunately for Zoom I think that this unit is showing its age against the newer processing abilities of the Hotone. I feel like the Zoom would be easier for a gigging musician once set up but the sounds on the Hotone are very impressive. A retest with the Zoom G6 (£40 more than the Ampera so still within reach as an alternative) would be nice to get an idea of how much better Zoom's more modern tech is in comparison. You could add a Pod Go to the mix if you wanted to add another factor to the video as it is at a very similar price to the G6.

Listening on reference monitors The Ampero ( I think I prefer Hot One to Ho'Tone !?) definitely came across best but as has been said it's more recent technology so you'd expect that. I think some of the problems identified with the Zoom could probably have been addressed by tweaking the compression & EQ for each patch but the test seems to have been conducted using the unedited patches provided, so perhaps it's not a totally true reflection of the Zoom's performance.

I had a Boss ME, and man did I think it was great when I first got it. Over time not so much, didn't like the OD tones so I went with regular pedals. Last year I got the Zoom and it's fantastic. Can't find a bad sound and every time I play I'm still like "wow, that's great tone" every time I hit that first chord... And I play with my wah always on, so it's not as dark sounding as what you're doing here. I can get the same exact sound, just sounds like a treble boost once I click the wah on, toe down. Again, with the Boss I used the pedal for a volume because its wah wasn't the greatest. I'm sure that Ampero is a step up because it's a little more $ without the pedal and other features. But what it does do it does better, opting for more choices in less categories. The zoom, like the boss, isn't really pro gear, I think it's more introductory level giving average players a glimpse of the big boy toys. Nothing wrong with that for players like me who are not spending near $1k because now I need a wah and another this or that, and If you don't do the pepsi challenge with better gear, it sounds fine.

One thing I will say. , The reverbs on the zoom are better. the majority of the Amperos DSP power goes into the amp models... It's called an amp modeller, so don't expect spectacular modulation effects,.because they are ok . Zooms are a bit better.

The Ampero is a great unit, more open sounding, more amps & cabs, touchscreen, bit more expensive. Zoom is darker sounding but doesn’t bother me, as others have said use the exciter and opens up a broader tone spectrum, for me it has more than enough individual FX, I don’t need hundreds, we tend to use a range of our favoured FX once you get to know it well enough, maybe 20 FX at a push, the zoom is better for live being able to turn each individual effect on/off in stomp mode like individual pedals, ampero you need to really have all your presets already setup which can be a bit of a pain in the arse! I don’t know about the ampero looper functionality but the Zoom Looper functions are excellent, various modes of how to use, especially if your looping along with built in drums. Can record drums in or not and just play along to drums and not record them by changing the pedal order and placing the looper either at the start, end or other points in the pedal chain will give different results, you can set a 1 bar count in before looper starts recording, can set how many bars the looper records for before stops recording and starts looping round, thus making much easier not having to stomp on pedal to record and then stop at exactly the right end point to get perfect loop, so no foot stomping to record and stop is a lot easier and you have the perfect loop with no timing issue that maybe out by a fraction of a second. The Zoom totally works for me and what I need it for and my style, sounds good enough for the cash compared to a lot higher priced alternatives. I got a hardly used G5N few months ago for £120 great price cos a decent looper pedal and tuner individually would have cost just as much if not more! Then plenty individual effects, more than I’ll need. I don’t want for IR loading or tons of different amp models, a small few will do me. For the low price of the Zoom G5N and number of FX and overall functionality it’s an excellent unit.

John's a fantastic addition to the team, whilst I know he's the digital guy... it'd be great to see him in some acoustic videos, he's a fantastic player. Maybe an acoustic amp/pedal special?

2 things. First, at the beginning of the video when you talked about the units baby brothers you showed pictures of the two units being reviewed and not the baby pictures. No big deal. Second, I had an Ampero but the lack of an fx loop became a deal breaker. I sold it and bought a NUX MG-30. I think the NUX actually sounds better, probably because it is one of the only multi fx units I have used that had factory presets that are quite usable. This is most likely because NUX commissioned real players to create them. The only 2 things that I found lacking in the MG-30 were the lack of both balanced and unbalanced outputs and the lack of a T-Wah effect which I use a lot. The lack of the outputs was solved by purchasing a two channel DI box on Amazon for only $20.00 USD. Now I have both balanced and unbalanced outputs on both channels. As far as the lack of a T-Wah, I contacted NUX tech support and they informed me that the next firmware update coming out will be adding that effect. Win, Win situation. Also, I got the NUX brand new open box for only $225.00 USD, so my total investment including the DI box was less than $245.00, which was less than I was able to sell the Ampero for.

@Mark Seymour The sound of the ZOOM is the sound of the cabinet, and the Ampero gave me the impression that I was listening to the sound of the cabinet being picked up by the microphone.

Digital effects have come a long way in the last years so it's a bit unfair to Zoom. I'm so glad I waited to get the Hotone Ampero. The company I bought it from didn't understand the product they were selling and mistakenly sold it to me for 200 quid lol. I remember having the cheap Zoom 505 back in the day. Back then multi effects units could not do a decent overdrive. Now it's a different ball game.

Why not compare against the Zoom G6? Seems like it's still in a comparative price point? I've heard the navigation is overdone, but sound wise is quite excellent. Seems like an "uneven" shoot out, just my opinion.

I want to perform live multi track and song based looping. I play a baritone and regular guitar plus saxophone and I like to sing. I need a drum machine for sure. I can't decide if I should go for a traditional multi track guitar looper (Boss rc 10r, rc 500, rc 505, or rc 600)) or get into ableton push or maschine mk3. I am worried about latency. What do you recommend?

  • @GATvsGAT

Nice comparison. Gotta say though…. Despite the sound difference, the Zoom (which I think sounds warmer anyway) is super pedal board friendly as it is able to be powered off a standard pedal board power supply (500 mA at 9 V DC centre negative). In fact… I’m powering mine off a 20,000 mAh power bank on my gigging board via a USB 5 V to 9 V scale up cable… Imagine being able to rock up to your session without having to worry about yet another power source for your modeller 😁 Remember every extra cable/power source is another opportunity to create ground loops and unwanted noises…. I don’t see any other “high end” modeller board with this practicality.

Great info, thanks! I love my G5n. I'm trying to use a battery to run it. It recently started having terrible noise when I use both outputs. It started when I plugged into my church's "upgraded" house sound system. Poor grounding? Any help?

Interesting review but not as good as I expected... You can get much better tones with both units to be honest. It would be good to spend a bit more time to equalize the two units both in terms of volume and frequencies. Like this, the only thing we learn is that by 'default' the Zoom is darker and the Hotone is raspier. A good approach would be to have a common reference sound (real amp?) that you try to match. And also try to play the same kind of riffs with varying levels of dynamics (and use the volume pot of the guitar to see how it cleans up). And if the units accept IRs, try to use the same at least in one comparison (high gain)
