If humans want everyone to have a chance of satisfying basic needs and improve their quality of life, universal access to contraception must be made possible, in addition to empowerment of women, improved education, and access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Her Tedtalks makes me expand my understanding and knowledge about contraception. Each of us has individual understanding ang I really agree to what she said. It helps every women to expand their prespectives in life.

Women have a right to their body and their choices that regard their body. It astounds me that birth control is not more readily available for women. There is a long process that women must go through in order to receive the type of contraceptives they want. Also, it makes me sad to know that women in rural areas of the world do not even have access to contraceptives for most of the year.. This creates unwanted pregnancies and distress among those women. Women should be able to decide when they are ready to have children. They should not have them due to default. It is appalling that in the United States African American women were sterilized without consent. This type of thing should never happen to anyone. It is a painful procedure and it is unethical without consent. Lastly, with control over when a person has children and how many they want to have, a woman can provide a better lifestyle and education for her children (or child). Control is key in this scenario. We need to make contraceptives for women more accessible and affordable, without the hassle of waiting months to schedule an appointment with a doctor and without running into troubles with "out of stock" order.

The real issue is actually this. Go look at the Georgia Guidestones. They are planning to kill off most of the world's population through these methods. Go look at Japan and China. There are already not enough women to replace all the ones they aborted or stopped through birth control. If allowed to continue the world population will start to get below replacement levels. Japan is already below replacement rate, not enough women and too many men without wives. Japan is going extinct. If Gates really wants to improve the lives of all people, you can't do that abortion and birth control, that doesn't change the fact that their governments are so corrupt that they won't allow their economies to grow and people to innovate. Take a look at the Health Care Law mandating Birth Control funding. All of this stuff has been confirmed. This is exactly what the elites believe. Well here is the thing, we have off the shelf technology that can improve people's lives right now, that costs next to nothing to improve the quality of people's lives. Take a look at Africa, in the 1980s we had all these people starving. 25 YEARS later, its happening again. The countries of the world have lent over a TRILLION Dollars to the places where these people live, Why can't they get out of poverty? Its because all that money really goes to the war lords and people in power. They've used that money to build themselves palaces, fancy cars, and even more ability to clamp down on the population who are sick and starving, and Gates wants to hand out contraceptives to these people? When you really look at who is offering us these solutions, its people who have BILLIONS at their disposal. Money most people will never see. I don't have kids, never used any contraceptive pill and never will. We should be educating people about how to understand their bodies, or how to strengthen immune system etc, instead of giving them pills or injections

My parents had 5 children, some people may think that that’s a lot, but it’s something that I am always grateful for. My siblings are the best gift that my parents had ever gave me. My mom did sacrifice her career and we were not all planned, but she always says that she never regretted it. We don’t have to plan everything all the time. We don’t have to be always in full control.

I agree there has to be a reduction in wasteful spending. There are 2 sides to getting out of a financial hole. One is to waste less money. The other is to invest wisely. Businesses have learned the lesson the hard way that it's smarter to spend wisely and invest money now to prevent problems and maintain the flow of income than it is to skimp now and pay more later in reparations. There is a balance to be struck, but reducing waste AND risk are essential parts of that balance.

That's easy to say in an environment where you can take such things pretty much for granted. She's talking about places here where many of the things you take for granted are not granted and can't be earned because there's no way off the bottom rung. That's all that's being proposed. Governments spending tax money on such initiatives could be seen as an extremely smart strategic move because it means making less enemies and spending less on aid in the future. It's win-win.

I disagree, I believe big families in Asia or Africa are really not a problem, but infertility because of postponing the time of having a child, as well as the focus of Melinda on economic growth

Maybe it's what ISN'T being said that tells more about the Gates' real motivation then their fluff pieces like this. In an article on the link between poverty and population growth in the Guardian, a site that's heavily funded by Gates, I believe, the Overseas Development Institute is recorded saying "Despite economic growth, one in five children will live in poverty because of high fertility rates, inequality and deep-seated privation." Interestingly you never hear either of the Gates talking about the economic inequality or deep-seated privation this quote refers to, especially in a country where they have the heaviest footprint in terms of vaccinations and birth control. Bill was even recently bragging about how his initial $10M investment in vaccines, some two decades later, has made him over $200 million in profits. How altruistic! Better than what he could have done in the stock market alone, he exclaims. For a country like Africa that's RICH in raw resources, the real reason poverty exists here is not population growth (or laziness as is often accused), it's this "deep-seated privation," by Western countries, mind you, and subsequent corruption that's been going on since the Scramble for Africa in the late 19th century. Anyone with honest motives to make a difference in a population as destitute as Africa, is going to have something to say about that. Additionally, any deep study into the subject of population growth will highlight how merely minimizing inequality and, thus, raising peoples's standard of living, cuts down on birthrates naturally. But in no talk have I ever heard that mentioned by one of the Gates. Not that I'm in no way an expert on them, mind you. And not that birth control couldn't be done judiciously in connection with addressing the corruption at the source (although if it's some kind of a hormone-alternating medication, there are health issues that arise), but it is suspect that these other causes seem to be wholly left out of their picture of "how to save the world, one birth control pill or vaccination at a time." Additionally, although vaccines are heralded as the heroes of halting the spread of communicable disease epidemics, what's really responsible for it is the public works projects that started popping up throughout western Europe and the U.S. in the later 19th and early 20th centuries, as a recognition of the correlation between the environment and health, that were responsible for eradicating these particular disease epidemics. The emergence of vaccinations coincided at the same time and took the credit. Something the medical establishment has been notably doing since the time of Christ (see meaning of Pharmacy). One of my favorite "real" charities is Charity Water, who goes into countries in Africa, especially, and simply digs wells for water for the populations to have access to. Waters that are fresh and pure and not polluted by, who knows what industry (thanks to lax environmental standards that Western businesses are able to take advantage of) that cause all kinds of heart-breaking tumors and diseases in these people. If Bill and Melinda were truly concerned about the people, wouldn't their address of the disease and poverty epidemics that plague Africa at least have SOME preventative or corrective measures in it? The WHO, which is where the official direct came for countries to quarantine in order to stop the spread of CoVID-19, only came after Bill, the WHO's second largest donor, gave a sizable donation in the millions. Interestingly, the WHO, as of ten years ago when I was doing a research paper on the Global Obesity Epidemic, was an agency much more focused on the spread of NON-communicable diseases, in which communicable diseases (virus, bacterial, etc.) had largely decreased to the point of these not being the epidemics of concern, but had switched their focus, instead, to the spread of progressive diseases, such as Diabetes, heart disease, cancer and the like, associated with the entrance of Western fast food restaurants and other products of the manufactured food industry entering these countries. With associated rises in disease states perfectly aligned with the consumption of these foods. Hence, I suspect some seriously slimy business dealings between the Gates, Big Food and Big Pharma in redirecting the WHO's focus and possible staging of this whole Coronavirus epidemic. Bill is even purported to be soaking millions into the media to cover the story his way. Fact check that if you want, as I can't remember where I had read that from.

1:00 That's cool that she includes "cycle beads" because that basically is what even the Catholic church allows, as a natural form of birth control. It does require some abstinence, but only for a part of the woman's cycle. It is also no cost. Teaching that method would lower unwanted pregnancies for women with regular ovulatory cycles. Also can be used in reverse to help plan a wanted pregnancy. Yes, teach women about their body cycles (and can do with or without the cycle beads).

Well that very much depends on which data you select doesn't it. The data concerning government (tax funded) aid that's conditional on transparency, ring-fenced for specific programs, doled out and reviewed periodically and targeted at smart initiatives, shows clearly that there are more schools, more kids are going to school (millions more), more private local business starting up, less poverty, fewer kids dying of e.g.malaria and HIV etc. We can learn from past mistakes AND move forward.

Exactly? I puted my opinion in controvelsial way on purpose so let me put it in broader persepctive: I think we have much bigger issue here that birth control, and I don't think that Melinda Gates way is a solution. The way she aproaches this issue is like trying to cure cancer with a makeup....

Melinda is a very capable and compassionate speaker and those impoverished, disempowered African, South east Asian and Afghani women must be so grateful to be able to have the choice regarding how many children they choose to have. Being their ‘Voice’ is social justice and service at its best.

Heheh. My initital post was more about contraception than it was about media discrimination. I consider the two issues to be linked, however. One can disagree with this perspective, but your posture throughout this discussion can be acurately described as confrontational and vitriolic, not as puzzlement or curiosity. In my experience as a progressive & social activist, those who respond with vitriol to calls for equality typically are those who stand to lose their priviliges from it.

I hear all of that and I don't necessarily disagree with your overall view. However I don't think there can be any doubt that international diplomacy, paid for with tax, is essential both to the economy and defence of a nation. There isn't a sphere of human activity where it's considered sensible to sit idly by and allow situations to develop into clear and present problems. I see assisting developing nations to get off their knees as an economic and security investment.

That goes without saying. People should be fairly taxed according to their means and government spending on aid should be fairly balanced in proportion to a nations means. It costs less tax money to prevent a war than it does to fight one.

Contraceptives are used throughout Scandinavian, European and North American countries. However, the birth rate in these countries especially among 'whites' is extremely low because the traditional family structure in these countries has broken down almost completely. Marriage is non existent. Most children are born out of wed-lock and are raised by single mothers, single fathers or sometimes no parents. In Asia, Africa and Middle eastern countries people still get married and want to have families and children the traditional way. However, that is changing now slowly. Make no mistake about it. Promiscuity among university and college students in western countries is extremely high. This has lead to many societal problems.

Free unlimited contraception must be available to all humans everywhere. Human overpopulation is devastating, and 40 percent of pregnancies are unplanned globally. That is pure insanity. Melinda Gates is one of the greatest humans in history, and we owe her so much for her good work in slowing down human overpopulation.

bary1234 many statisticians say that the population will peak at 11 billion. Why? Because back then people had many children because many died, but now that new medicine and education is better and more available, people had lots of children but barely any of them died, and the reason that population is rising fast is because the population boom of the last generation are having kids themselves now, but they are having about 2 kids per average in almost every country

American birth rate per women is sitting at about 2 children per women and this is a static growth figure and not some out of control figure. Children out of wedlock is not a problem I do not understand how you would think this is the case. You can call it population control if you want but it still amounts to giving people an educated choice that is not based on cultural norms.
