Let's play Battletech: Bring in the Tanks!

Ойындар

This time around, we dive into the world of tanks, hovercraft, VTOLs, mobile artillery and battle armor infantry, learning our way around tracks, wheels, air cushions, rotors, and how well they play against the much more powerful clan equipment.
The first two turns of the game we use to bring in rules explanations as they come up, and in the second half of the video, we'll go over to a much more quick and dirty battlereport style. Enjoy! Special thanks to everyone who gave us video footage, voice acting, pictures, references and rules clarification - you know who you are!

    Question: When riding, shouldn't the elementals still sink an activation?

  • @4handsondeck

    @4handsondeck

    Жыл бұрын

    not from how I understand it. since, when they're riding, they don't have any action they can take. they're effectively immobile. the carrier can decide to unload them, but they themselves don't have any agency. but, re-reading the wording on 'movement phase (ground)', yeah, I do think you may be correct. apparently, even fully immobile units still get an 'activation', even if they can't actually do anything... huh. the more you know. now, to find out how to pin your comment....

    @@4handsondeck Bit late to the party, but a tip in the Battlemech Manual is to "activate" your immobile 'mechs to sink a movement activation and get your opponent to move before you. So it seems logical that those rules would still apply for other "immobile" units.

    I wanted to joke about Steiner commander being as competent as other Steiner commanders in lore and driving that Bulldog on the inescapable cliff, but then realized that because of how much vehicles you had you essentially made yourself a permanent free initiative win with Urbanmech, LRM Carrier and that Bulldog always standing in their spots like turrets, knowing that they certainly won't be a N1 priority for Clan forces, which is, to think of it, kind of a genius move! Love the videos, the production quality is amazing. Can't praise these videos enough. Amazing quality given how new to the game you guys seem. Quick notes: mechs are 2 levels tall, and their sight is based on the sensors being on the top of the mech (if you're standing), so your other video had some LOS issues. In this one, tanks/vehicles are only 1 level tall and get full cover if _next_ to an elevation change between you - unless a enemy unit is standing on said elevation change ;) (The vehicles are generally considered to be 'hiding' in the shadow of the elevation change. Trees are generally 2 levels tall as well. In the other video, you appeared to miss a lot of piloting skill rolls, though that could have been editing.... +20 damage, kicked/missing kicks, falling handle bar checks, etc. Also consciousness rolls happen immediteatly usually. Elementals usually begin the game mounted if desired, so don't need to init sink like you did in the first turn, and your understanding of their mounted initiative skipping is correct. Well done on getting the skidding rules right.. that one's a tough one to master. I'm dissapointed you didn't get to elemental swarming rules... those are... fun. Crit rolls, if the first roll isn't available you have to re-roll both of the d6 Die hard tournament rules (not generally followed) also have some weird rules about who gets to roll crits, i say do what ever makes the game faster. Usually vtols have 2 dice on the mini, one for elevation tracking, one for movement mods. They're so fragile they usually need to use cover to survive- by weaving though terrain. The laser weapons against them in this battle didn't make a difference, but cluster shots get a pretty big bonus against them (lbx shot guns, or regular guns with flechette ammo are nasty), but so is a yellow jacket appearing behind you with it's gauss rifle. It may sound like a lot of critizism but you've done amazingly well, and have the flow down pat. Keep up the good work! PS. if you're looking for novel based lore intro to the universe read Decision at Thunder Rift, or the Blood of Kerensky trillogy.

    oh wow, thats a lot to take in! first of, thanks for taking the time, glad you enjoyed, and don't worry about 'lots of criticism'. we're german, we're taking criticism as a compliment - means you took the time to look at our stuff in depth, and the importance and size of 'issues' you adress means we got everything 'larger' right. so, this is totally a win in my book! that said.... yeah, I know about the vehicle/mech heigth, and I usually tried to get it right. didn't realize we messed up multiple times even, thats certainly on us! I know we missed the half-cover rule a few times, with the 'impossible to hit' leg locations. also, rerolling BOTH d6 on a crit makes so much sense, thanks for pointing that out. skill rolles, yeah, we edited a few out, but I won't say we never missed any. we were kinda trying to skirt the fine line between 'show everything' and 'don't let it get boring'. as for the init-sink elementals, someone else already commented saying that any unit, no matter if mobile or not, sinks an activation, and when I looked it up in total warfare, I was inclined to agree. apparently there's more than one opinion there.... as for the swarming, I really wanted to get into it, but the game just didn't really pose much of an opening, aside from the one turn where I should've swarmed the urbie but didn't. because.... no reason really, I just figured they'd deal more damage with their SRMs than with a swarm attack. which is obviously wrong, but, hindsight, first time playing with elementals... elevation die on the vtol sounds smart. in this game, we just went with 'they're on heigth 20, and never change elevation' to make things a little easier, not like they could've made great use of cover anyway - the way the map looked with the crater in the middle. nice to know the cluster weapon bonus, but unless that goes for LRMs too, I don't think we had anything of the sort on the board, sadly. that all said - again, thanks for the in-depth analysis, I'll certainly take most of that to mind! in episode 4, the third is already well on the way to being released!

    Great narrative battle lads, and the production is still as good as always. To answer your question on “if they fly off” it comes down to the players. Some treat it as the unit is gone/Kia while other use the reserve/outflank rules to determine when stuff returns. As for future vids. Would love to see you guys increasing the Combined Arms feel - a Normandy style battle sounds fun with IS mechs, BA and Infantry storming the shores (could be against the clans, or could be set in FedCom Civil War so both of you can use a mix of IS and Clan tech as well as BA and Infantry). Could also maybe do a vid on Alpha Strike showing off the other system and how it fairs when dealing with combined arms.

    we haven't yet tried alpha strike and want to focus a little more on the classic version for now. perhaps in the future though! that said, the beach landing does sound cool... maybe even make it half-naval, with mechs having to emerge from the shoreline where a submarine is stationed.... kind of a 'breakthrough' type deal, having to get through the shore defenses to then fight an objective on the land.... fedcom civil war sounds good for that too.... hmm, will have to think on it.

  • @4handsondeck

    @4handsondeck

    15 күн бұрын

    We played quite a bit of 40k - battletech goes with single mechs as models, where 40k uses 30-model-groups of mosha boyz, gaunts, or a tac squad of marines. every 40k group ends up having a bunch of special weapons and such, while being in the same place - which just ends up being roughly equivalent to a single mech with a bunch of weapons strapped on it, in terms of game feel. as for the number of tables? yeah, its a lot. however, on the other hand, its rather light on special rules, so you don't have to keep looking up stuff across 5 different books! and the tables are neatly pre-arranged in cheat sheets for ease of use and making copies for everyone involved!

Because we KNOW the rules are still being applied "in the background" we can experience the mechanics of Battletech as a story and that's what it's all about for me, in the end. I think that is what I love about this game, besides the intrincacies and excitement of it - is the emergent story that happens during battle thanks to the uniquely detailed mechanical rigor of the rules.

I've watched a lot of videos trying to get myself up to speed and trying to figure out how to play as I slowly try to get into Battletech myself, and I will say while I've seen dozens of 'after action report' videos, yours are the most informative because you've actually gone through the rules, explained why things behave certain ways - but also fast forward when those rules have already been explained so the video isn't more incredibly long than it needs to be. I really appreciate that. The only thing I'd have changed - is at least with the first Elemental soldier getting hit with the AC/20... you missed a chance to play the "Wilhelm Scream" - haha! it was rather hilarious how these super roided out battle hardened guys get offloaded and ready to do some serious damage only to take basically an artillery shell to the face. Even power armor isn't enough to stop a projectile the size of a small child moving at the speed of "Oh shit", from utterly pasting the poor user inside said power armor. I love it, please keep making videos, even if it's just after action reports without new explanations to rule sets, just watching you guys play is pretty fun!

    we'll see what we can do! shorter videos are definitely something we need to get comfortable with eventually. and no worries about infantry... I (green) absolutley adore infantry, vehicles and other combined-arms stuff, so they WILL show up sooner or later. for now, a short answer: mechanized infantry covers infantry in APCs, IFVs and so on, so to base them, small armored vehicles are what you want. think american bradley etc.: a somewhat large (at least for an infantry group) weapons platform with enough room to quickly mount and dismount infantry 'on the fly'. drive up to a building, get the troops out, troops go through building, vehicle goes around while applying focus fire on enemy hot spots, infantry gets back into vehicle on the other side and carries on. working SO in tandem that, in the tabletop, you never seperate the 'infantry' part from the 'vehicle' part, thus only ever needing one model, even if they'd narratively dismount to get stuff done.

    Great video and the hosts are well spoken and easy to listen too. Would love to see more Battletech tabletop. Tutorials are great and I'd love more of those because I mostly play BT or MW video games but curious about tabletop. But I'd also enjoy just watching some narrative games. Found myself easily invested in the Steiner forces going in blind vs Clan mechs. I enjoy after action report videos but this is much easier to follow than the goliath of rules in some other war games. Something happens in BT? There's a roll table for that. Got recommended from all the other BT content I watch but the quality of the videos got me interested in your other videos so I'll check those out soon.

Though production was limited making them rare, just like ER tech wasn't completely lost either. Though that's more a logistical topic for Mechwarrior (pen and paper RPG) rather then stock config Battletech mechs.

    In order to moderate the effects of initiative sinking, I have a house rule of requiring all units who have used running/flank speed in the previous turn to be the first units to be moved before all other units. I mark these units with a bead token when removing movement dice during end-of-turn cleanup. Once these units move, their status is reset with movement dice replacing the bead token. The rationale is that momentum isn't so easily overcome on a dime, so intention is revealed in movement choice from the previous turn. A mech or vehicle at flank speed that changes its speed noticeably reveals whether it is maintaining a comparable flank speed, slowing to cruising speed, or coming to a stop. Jumping movement isn't handled like running because of how jumping is seen in-game as launching into air and then landing within the same turn, establishing momentum as being overcome during landing. Thus in combined arms games, less "important" units (looking at you infantry, immobile units) lose some of their grossly unwarranted initiative sinking. This makes the turn-by-turn game appear more dynamic than the usual go-stop-go nature that the game mechanics portray. Plus, it becomes another tactical consideration in deciding whether the defensive bonus for flank movement is worth being moved up in activation during initiative.

    The falling of the map depends on the game type your doing, for any games using a single map like yours, they are removed from play, counted as destroyed for score, but not destroyed for multiple mission games and campaigns so it can come back in a new separate latter battle, as people do not normally use side maps for airospace, instead using the radar map, this means you remove it from play for the most part, count it as destroyed for score but alive for future missions.

    There are probably better ways to do it, especially if you have the necessary assets or tools, but here's what we did: We just took screenshots of the relevant moments and painted the effects over them onto transparent layers, then imported those back into the video editor. We also threw is some glow effects ontop of that. And the movement is basically just done by shoving masks across the static layers.

    the dice behind the vehicles are there for the same reason as those behind the mechs - they show the target modifier for movement. so, black die, the vehicle 'ran', or 'flanked' as its called for vehicles, white die is 'walk' or rather 'cruise', and the number of eyes is the increase in difficulty for the to-hit number. some later tech vehicles even have jump jets and would use a red die. cheers!

    they are printed in the different 'battletech: record sheets' books. they're sorted by which TRO (technical readout) the unit appears in. the schrek version used here, for example, is in the 3039 unabridged version. store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-record-sheet-3039-unabridged-pdf store link here, for an exact 'table of content' before you buy, I'd always advise sarna. www.sarna.net/wiki/Record_Sheets:_3039_Unabridged I usually go the other way round - look up the unit I want to use on sarna, see which TRO it featured in, check if I own it already and if its worth me getting the sheets for it if I don't. with some work, and if you don't care about owning the official ones, you COULD also check out megamek. a bit complicated to use, but it has the values of most units in existance, along with a 'print' option. cheers, and enjoy!

Like for the price of a mixed force of tanks, arty, mobile guns, support vehicles and some air for recon... I could get 160 Savannah Masters and watch the horror upon the other person's face as a horde of hovering garbage swarms them. But no I went with the first option. • @4handsondeck

    savannah masters are horribly OP when comparing their cost to their effectiveness, thats true. the only real 'counter' I can find to fielding 160 savannah masters is: calculate how much upkeep they require to maintain during peacetime. hovercraft is expensive. training for the pilots is too. not to mention the question of just how many landing ships you need for 160 savannah masters... as far as I know, a leopard dropship can still only carry 8 of them. or is it even only 4? either way. focus a bit more on the narrative, and the 160 savannah masters go away! ....if only I could find a way to have the same argument for 300+ infantry platoons.... probably have to start by 'how do you get enough food and toilet paper to them, and how to prevent plagues'....

  • @konsyjes

    The elevation DOES matter :) You measure the range in hexes as usual, and measure the difference in elevation (to the mech's torso which is 1 lv above the ground: a mech is 2 lvls tall.) THEN you add HALF of the smaller of the two distances to the other and that is your range. It is a beautifully streamlined application of the Pythagorean theorem I believe.
