For anyone interested a bunch of people on the channels discord server seemed interested in me playing the original Fallout. I'll be streaming on twitch, Saturday the 25th, starting 11am EDT (UTC -4) and going until i get tired some time in the afternoon. Why fallout 1? because I've never played it and know very little about it. So It'll be a blind playthrough. You don't need an account, just click or copy-paste the link below and you can head over and watch. If the turnout is decent I'll consider streaming regularly again every weekend. Alot of the older, and argumentative better, units have multiple generations pilots by virtue of surviving multiple wars. Macarrons armored cavalry was around 40 years old I believe around 3025, eridani light horse has been around since the first succession war and 6 more wars have failed to put them and their traditions down. They pretty much survive through either careful planning, proper welfare for their troops, luck, the sheer obstinacy to not die or pure charisma or some mix in between really sets them away from the rest. A merc who lives past his 30s through war is by default someone special in the battletech setting.

@@joelkreissman6342 I wonder how extensive that was, because I've only been able to find oblique references to the Dragoons using that tech in the lore. How many sibkos were they raising at any given time? Most importantly, did they have access to the full range of tools available to a Clan geneticist (tweaking the genome of each sibko), or were they simply used as cloning vats by the Dragoons to artificially replenish losses more quickly? You might be able to pass off a batch of Mechwarrior phenotypes as war orphans, but Elementals and especially ASF pilots are going to raise some eyebrows from friend and foe alike

Life changed significantly for innersphere and periphery mechwarriors during the 4th Succession War. Comstar was no longer able to stop star nations from retooling, rebuilding production facilities and not only new mechs but new cooling suits and neuro-helmets were becoming much more common place. It made life "easier" for new mechwarriors, but also killed a lot more new mechwarriors. Then their are the even fewer arena mech jocks, even fewer of which become famous and rich on Solaris.

Okay. RE:Neurohelmets: As someone who has been in a car accident that gave me whiplash, and has a little experience with SCA Armor, the 'Primitive' helmet is the helmet design you want for your pilot who is in between the shoulders of a quickly moving giant that is prone to hitting the ground under duress. When the Mech shifts from foot to foot, the shoulders shift with it, and you're moving large number of inches. Should it roll with a hard impact, your being twisted at park fun-ride speeds and or being displaced just as much. When the Mech faceplants, your dropping entire stories before your momentum is stopped. Maybe, just maybe, the Mech will help cushion that fall with an outstretched arm or going to a knee first. One of the things I learned from the SCA is that you want your helmet to keep your head centered on your shoulders when you take impacts. Otherwise you're prone to neck injuries, like whiplash. So, when artists show something that looks like modern fighter pilot helmets where you can keep your head on the swivel, they're getting it wrong for a BattleMech for that very reason alone. On a side note, with your head successfully encased and centered on your shoulders, you won't be able to look around. That's where a hud screen right in front of your face, and a compressed panaramic external display inside your field of vision come in. You won't be looking at side screens to your left or right. You can't. You won't even be looking outside that wonderful bubble canopy with a view, like on a Griffin or Catapult. You can't. It all has to be within your field of view. On another side note, the head can get real hot in a helmet real fast, forcing steam buildup on a faceplate or anything like that, so I'm fond of imagining that the large 'Primitive' neurohelmet also has coolant linkages to the Coolant vest so that the pilot's head can equally be liquid cooled by contact exposure. Like putting a cold bottle or glass of water against your scalp.

  • @jakeg3733

    @jakeg3733

    Ай бұрын

That is a very good point about keeping your spine aligned during hard impacts. Especially preventing twisting. I have an EMS background and those "primitive" neurohelmets now look a lot like a fancy c-collar to me. Awkward looking, but they'd effectively hold your head and neck on the same axis as your torso. Now, as for falling 3 stories.... I honestly hadn't considered that in this context (I have some blindspots when it comes to BT, despite typically picking everything apart, because I grew up with it). The your mech going down full-stop could be fatal. I guess it makes sense why that happens sometimes in the games and the lore. Used to laugh at the whole "pilot incapacitated" from a fall, but it'd be a deadly serious situation if you went down the wrong way. That's a _lot_ of momentum and the cockpits are full of shit to smack your face on. Serious trauma potential

When someone asks about the mech pilot outfits you know they know nothing about the lore or read any of the books. It goes into considerable detail about how hot the cockpits can get and how small some are. So if you're piloting, say a Black Knight, you're gonna find the pilot shedding clothes quickly, assuming they were even wearing a lot if they knew the mission would be hell. So it's basically 50% fan service and 50% canon.

Hello SCI I am one of those 'old salts'. Ya know, the grey bearded guys that still play the game 40 years later. Yes, I am one of those that played with the fold-over cardboard mechs and thin cardboard counters. I've played every Battletech game there is, excepting Cresent Hawk's Revenge. In the mid-90s, I pined for a computer version of the game, since battles took so damned long doing it paper and pencil style in tabletops. And lo, and behold, Hare Brained Schemes did just that. So, I have quite a long history of playing the game, with all sorts of Mechs, Fighters, Tanks, and other units. I even played the Mechwarrior RPG as well. Neuro-Helmets work pretty much as you've described, and yes, there exists everything from the 'primitive' conehead design, up to and including the ones that look like slightly thicker styled non-powered armor helmets. And then there is the Clans, where they took things even further by implanting circuitry directly into a person's skull. Keep on making videos, yours are fun to watch and listen to. As for Fallout... Why not play FO-4 instead? There was a recent upgrade to the game released by Bethesda, and I am finding it engaging as I play the game again from a fresh start. The only real 'issue' I have is that the new upgrade makes all previous mods unusable. So, I especially miss the 'Scaver's Toolbox', which made rendering items picked up into components so easy. Why an Awesome? Why not... it's... Awesome!

Its been a long while since I played FO4 though, and with the new update, even though it breaks all the existing mods, I thought I'd give it a whirl and explore all of the new content. Oh, as fr your video on 'the meat' of Battletech... I'd say you were pretty much on point and correct. Although, I have to add that I played B-Tech since its release in 1984 with a group of friends at a game shop in the Chicago suburbs... well... sort of about a mile outside the city limits, which was still in the 'urbran sprawl' and built up area of Chicago. My friends and I played nearly every weekend... from around 6:30 pm on Friday to around 1 or 1:30 am. Then went home, slept, and returned at 9am to play until around 1 or 1:30am again, repeat the go home and sleep thing, only to return on Sunday at 10am to play until around 10 pm, so we could all get some rest before work on Monday. We did that for years, man. Like around 12 or 13 years. After about a year, we were keeping track of our games and their results. We'd roll up salvage if we won a battle, and kept good records of Mechs, vehicles, and troops, and what it cost to keep everything running. This led to me doing a few things others don't do... like choosing a few select Fusion Engines and designing Mechs to use those engines. My fave was the Vlar 300. 100 tons, 3-5. 75 tons, 4-6. 50 tons, 6-9. etc. This let me 'economize' on costs for replacement Fusion Engines. I also made a LOT of use of available weapons 'on the cheap'... like ACs in Davion space, etc. Mostly, I was a huge fan of multiple Medium Lasers, and 'overkill' (my group's term) use of MGs. For instance. I designed a 50 ton Mech that had 5 Medium Lases and enough heat sinks to cover them, as well as 6 Jump Jets. The remaining tonnage, above nearly maxing out the Armor, was used up by installing 10 MGs and a tone of ammo. Jump up close, preferably behind the foe, and Alpha Strike with the lasers, then 'crit seek' with the MGs. Run up to an Infantry group and dump the MGs into them. Etc. Yeah, they purely hated that Mech... which I named the KTT-3N 'Kitten'. Due to all the record keeping, when the 4th Succession War was happening, and Dark Age was was released in RL, the 'battlemaster' decided to 'put me in my place', by hiring me out to House Liao, and then ordering my Mercs to 'stand and die, or we kill your dependents'. Well, having been a former member of the Davion Heavy Guards before becoming a Merc, I used my contacts to contact the Davion commander for the invasion. Proper shares of salvage, and a written promise to help retrieve my dependents, and I turned over all data on Liao forces on the planet. This led to my unit faking its death in combat and then pulling a 'hail mary' maneuver to outflank Liao forces to attack the space port as Davion rolled over other Liao forces on planet. My Mercs took the space port, and the Liao HQ, and my personal character shot the Mandarin in charge. This left the Mandarin's secure console active. So I wrote myself 'super-user' access with authority equal to the Mandarin. This let me send orders as if I was the Mandarin, himself. Which, let me request reinforcements that were granted, feeding them into pre-prepared Davion strong points. As part of this, I was able capture dozens of Drop Ships and even a few Jump Ships. This was very useful, as my access allowed me to send my troops to the nearby world to retrieve my dependents. Once fully reunited, I got my shares of salvage and looted both worlds. Tearing 3 Mech Factories to the ground, as well as looting all the banks. I sold all the House currencies to the Davion commander for C-Bills, and kept the looted bank's C-Bills. By the time I jumped out of the war theater, I had nearly a dozen Jump Ships, almost 2 dozen Drop Ships, and had returned my force back to Regimental size, with an additional half regiment of Mechs, a full regiment of Vehicles, and several units of Aero-Space Fighters. Since I didn't like Dark Age, I left the game for about 9 years and played Warhammer 40, building up Several companies of forces (all my own Chapter). I returned to Battletech with the Clan Invasion, with a nice 'back story'. One where my Mercs had zig0zagged across the southern Periphery until they reached the 'Staplin nebula' (actually, the Perseus-Cepherus Nebula), where they chose a solar system rich in rare earth elements, but with no habitable planets. Instead, boring into the various moons of the Gas Giant planets and building colonies in the large tunnel complexes. Mining ice to get Deuterium for Fusion Engine fuel, and using most of the drop ships and jump ships to establish trade routes to the various Periphery powers. Especially Canopus and the Taurians. So, when I returned to playing, I had around 90 years of time to build up my society and establish factories, refineries, manufacturing, sealed cavern 'gardens' using 'vertical' hydroponics systems, etc. And thus, by the time of the Battle of Tukayyid, My Mercs had changed their name from the old Star Lions Corps, to the Ghost Lions Legions, and could field roughly 3 Regiments of Mechs and vehicles. As of today, May 25th, 2024, The Ghost Lions can field FIVE Regiments of the most advanced Mechs and vehicles available, as well as dozens and dozens of unique designs they use in combat. I have several dozen 'articles' on the History of the Ghost Lions Legions, their government, which is a Democratic Tyranny... yes, it's possible! Sorry this went so long.

A side effect of the Neurohelmets is that it isn't just sensation, it's full proprioception. The 'Mech IS your body. Your eyes can see a butterfly flap its wings from a mile away, your ears can hear a pin drop from across a city, and your arms can move the world. In short, you're a god of war stomping through a world of cardboard. And that feeling is addictive. MechWarriors essentially develop self-induced species dysmorphia. They see themselves as their 'Mech just as much as their meat-body, if not more. They start to have trouble empathizing with mortal men, because their "true form" is so much greater. So keep that in mind, and then realize that every House Lord is, by necessity, a seasoned MechWarrior, and you start to understand why they act so crazy. It isn't 80s camp, they're just all literal sociopaths.

It’s every little boy’s dream and every man’s desire and as long as there’s not bagpipes playing in the background constantly because of the mech driving, you’ll be OK with the Highlanders

Being a mercenary mechwarrior is the epitome of "get rich or die trying." for every one who actually lives long enough to actually own more than one mech, there is atleast a dozen who died trying to do the same. For those that actually managed to fight your way to be rich or earned a peerage, as in a noble title, theres easily hundreds if not thousands who fail.

Two points I wish to make: 1) When the Olympics are held, one item in the gift bag every competitor receives is a 24-pack of condoms. Usually, they are attending for less than two weeks. In other words, people in prime mental and physical condition are expected to make out like rabbits. 2) Taken on average, women have better hand-to-eye coordination than men. This is why you often hear about female sniper teams (Russia used LOTS of these in WWII), pilots (as it happens, the baby-making parts are really good at resisting high-gee maneuvers), and so on. Since Mech piloting is all about skill and reflexes, it's no wonder that many are women. A very good video IMHO. No holds barred on the real life of a Merc or even a junior member of a household. Well done!

Well done SCI! This video represents the absolute most I've ever cared about the lore of this setting. I've been aware of BT/MW since the early 90s I reckon, and aside from a few video games that have captured my attention, but for a large number of boring reasons I've never dived in hard. To be fair, I'm still not going to (now that death is closer than birth, I'm being way more picky about my hobbies) - but a cool interesting video and I'm adding it to my world-building resources for my fiction work as it tackles angles I'd not considered before.

One detail I love in HBS's Battletech game is that the Argo has both a Boxing ring and a bunch of simpods. Both get used by MechWarriors to deal with stress by smacking around each other under the guise of competition and training. Got a minor noble and an ex-Solaris gladiator that are the top two in the merc group's little boxing league.

Neurohelmets control the balance of a mech, using a gigantic gyro, by hijacking the biological sensors in the pilots head. Namely and explicitly, the equilibrium of the inner ear. I have no idea if that science is right, but thats what's in at least some of the books. But that's all that they do as far as I can tell.

They replace arms and heads with heavy weapons...limbs are filled with ammo belts or even extra fission batteries.

No idea, i would assume it varies heavily based on contract. A merc outfit doing periphery work is probably going to be bouncing from one planet to another doing odd jobs and spending most of their time in transit. While a merc contracted to a great house will probably be spending most of their time planetside fighting or on garrison.

I've personally always thought of those old neurohelmets as the Galactus pattern myself. Speaking of, a lot of the "becoming the mech" isn't really a property of neurohelmets. It's more an aspect of later direct brain-machine interface technologies like the Clan's Enhanced Imaging implants or the Word of Blake's VDNI. These systems are rare though, and tend to drive the mechwarrior insane or worse due to gradual neurological degradation caused by the implants themselves..

  • @eddapultstab2078

The vdni system was actually a substitute for a neural helmets where the the system is now apart of you so you don't need a helmet to operate a mech, with compatible system. It was later found useful in protomechs as every inch of headspace saved matters.

It is hillarious to think that improvements in the pilot element of the mech would never change. Simply any mech pilotthat could modify his mech would do so so that they would not simply fall apart on a mission especially an extended one. Even now vehicles are starting to change to offer crew comforts because being rattled apart and melted in 100+ temps. Taking a bio break is needed by a crew of 3/4. So over 1150 years or so it is silly that people did not sort out the tech. I think all these hazards are dated and simply made for game play and not so much advancement into the future.

Most interesting is the freedom of mercenaries and why they live the life they live. In universe common man will never leave the planet you are born. You are typically on the same planet your entire life or part of interstellar commerce, were you wont live a life on a planet at all likely. Mercenaries are that caveat of warriors with skills and materials enough to try to eak out free living, traveling the galaxy. And often most mercenary units fall into debt, and finally to stay free banditry.
