You have long range, medium range, and short range weapons that all have different firing profiles, effects on target, lead requirements, and so on, different engagement strategies... there's multiple overlapping fields of fire and she's a walking fortress, as long as you remember all the parts. The king crab is pretty much "get in close and feed it AC/20 till it dies. Beat with claws." It is not a well rounded solution. It's a fucking hammer. I love the King Crab. It finally got its due as a hero (or in this case, villain) 'Mech in the Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries campaign mode. It also shows up as a final boss of sorts in the HBS Battletech tactical game. To be fair to the scientists and engineers of the Federated Suns, rotary ACs aren't recovered lostech, they're entirely new. They're also much bigger than you might think. If a Shadow Hawk has an 80 mm rapid-fire auto-loading cannon, the RAC equivalent is three to six barrels each in 80mm and able to pump out as much as six times the firepower over a 10 second period.
Tended to replace the AC-20s with Gauss. Or the RAC-5. Nice weight savings there, and more room for medium lasers. LOTS of medium lasers.

The Timby will always be my favorite. But the Marauder family is a close second, if not tied. I would argue the Timby is the ultimate evolution of the Marauder concept, as the Marauder was, effectively, a sort of proto-OmniMech. Had the Star League not fallen, it is highly likely that the SLDF would have something like the Timby within a century.
There is a legendary King Crab variant in Mech Warrior 5 that I really loved. I put 2 LB 10-C ACs in each arm so I had 4 total, and a SRM6 in one shoulder. The other shoulder was left empty to save weight for more ammo and armor. I set up the fire controls so the autocannons could be fired either one at a time, or all 4 at once. This thing was amazing anti-air at ridiculous distances, and the shotguns had surprisingly long harassment range. Up close however, this thing would shred almost any other mech instantly, especially if I line of sight to the legs first. Due to the scattershot nature of the shotguns, this was also one of the only assault mechs that could reliably hit locusts and fleas at any range.
There's just something especially charming about the way it saunters across the field, in what I call the "royal strut." It doesn't even need to be speedy, it'll blow things up on its own time, and look damn good doing it. Definitely my favorite Assault mech (Highlander is a *very* close second though.)
The Marauder and Marauder II are my favorites due to the versatility and protection. The King Crab is a very close second for me though. When fire power is the question and yes is the answer accept no substitute but CRAB!

King Crab was the greatest Star League-era Assault 'Mech... until FASA retroactively added powercreep monstrosities like the Devastator, Nightstar and Pillager into the era when they could have just put their loadouts onto King Crab variants or made them a post-Invasion response by the IS to Clan designs. Hell, the bloody Pillager was built _a century and a half_ in the lore before the King Crab and Atlas.

My dm unleashed this on us during one BattleTech session. Fighting it was terrifyingly hard
I liked the red paint scheme better than the green, yellow, or little orange highlights. The grabbers kind of make it look like Maximilian from the Black Hole.
The Supernova was one of my all time favorite mechs as I found it in MW3, the style of it, name and power, just loved it. But when I played MWO it wasnt there yet, so I got more into the older sorta brother, the King Crab, after finding it, I ditched all my other mechs early on to pick up the KGC faster and never looked back. I still love the SNV more, but its like, right tiny bit above the KGC, and in fact I have a King Crab the size of two soda cans tall sitting on my desk, while I don't have the SNV. Love this sexy beast. Also played the SNV (and only time I ordered a mech pack from MWO) after it came out later on.
King Crab was the first mech I ever got for TT. This mech also git me into BT
The ridiculous height differences between mechs are something that came about in the video games. Back in the 80s, the P&P game's designers apparently paid more attention to basic materials science. All the Mechs were all much closer in height. The squat, stocky build of the King Crab originally would have put its height at less than nearly all mediums and around the same as the humanoid lights.
As a desicated hunchback pilot, i would be the guy in the presented scenario of a Hunchie coming around a corner to see one of these. At which point I would then try to open up my dinner delivery of canned shellfish.
I want to talk briefly about a special mech in my heart for the UrbanmechAce does not always tread ground in a trash can. My King Crab in MWO is armed with 4 LBX/5 Autocannons set to chain fire for blinding my opponents in a hail of cluster fire fury, 3 ER medium lasers to cleave their armor and expose their structure for the LBX, and for anything that gets too confident 3 Rocket Launcher 15s. It is painted bright orange to match its temperament. I call it the Alaskan and it is my favorite assault mech. I have ridden into battle many times within its impervious carapace. The King Crab is proof that carcinization goes beyond biology.
In novels I am surprised enemy infantry hasn't tried to get on its back to set powerful charges in the shoulder joints. The k-crab would be extremely vulnerable to such tactics due to how wide it's back is. In fact it's one of my favorites as our Game master allows it. I love the cursing that follows after depriving the K-crab of its primary weapons, lol.

A King Crab being sent up against infantry is in itself a one-in-a-million thing. The damn Mech is built to hunt other assault Mechs or - with adequate support - roll up on heavy fortifications and blast a hole right through. Using that thing to stomp on PBI would be a criminal waste of a specialised asset like that.
I like how the king crab looks like a bridge of a ship, a pillbox. Irlt feels like a building given arms and legs. And all I can think of is. That’s where I wanna be in! Just you, you commander and maybe a third seat for a repairman or something. Manning this deathdealer. Setting up an ambush alongside an army of smaller mechs. All while keeping in contact with other king crabs.
All arguments about longevity on the battlefield, armour, technology, etc etc fall flat when faced with the counterpoint of "I have two ac20's"
the newer king crab definitely wins points for style even if its armament is a case of "terrifying on paper, quite awful in reality". Because its extremely ammo-dependant, and is quite harmless for its size out of the (short) range of its AC20s.... and it doesnt help that its speed is low, meaning its unlikely to ever catch up to anything that refuses to get close.

Those two weaknesses aren't even that much of an issue for the King Crab when it does what it's meant to do: Run up to an enemy assault Mech or bunker and blast a couple feet-wide holes through it.
I ran a slighty modified KC with endo steel to add some extra armor as well as a couple of medium lasers, a couple of small lasers, and an upgrade to double heatsinks, to drop a couple of the standard heatsinks to add a couple of extra tonssl of AC20 ammo. Every square inch of space in that frame was used, but the extra endurance and close range firepower made it a tough nut to crack. Ran it in a lance with 2 Archers and a Trebuchet. General attack plan was the missile boats pick a spot to hide and bomard everything in sight and the KC acted as their bodyguard, killing everything that came close. Devastatingly strong battle plan. The few times I lost with was due to beam boats like Awesomes making it to water to help them cool and then beam spam the whole board, or someone using jumpers like Grasshoppers and Victors to get around the KC. The King Crab was almost always my last mech standing too, tho my Trenchbucket had a surprisingly good survival rating too lol. The Archers almosy always died. People always took LRM spam so personally.

I salvaged four tier 5 UAC/5 guns, loaded them onto that bad boy, and piled on enough ammunition for a fun filled campaign of mayhem. It stomps a lot of mechs well outside of the range most assume they would have to worry about a King Crab. I also replaced the LRMs with two SRM 6s to shotgun blast enemies point blank with missiles. Digitigrade legs, on other points, I agree. I generally don't use assault mechs, but if I do, its ALWAYS a CrabDaddy!

Must admit my favorite custom mod is to pull the AC-20s and slap a pair of MRM-30s or 40s into those arms. So, a note good lore master. Sloped armor does indeed help with missiles and lasers. When a laser hits flat metal ot can focus more, when it hits a slop it loses some focus over area. The grester the slope, the greater the reduction. As for missiles, most use a shaped charge warhead to penetrate armor, over a slope that effect is reduced or near nullified.

It's a specialist to the Atlas' more generalist assault Mech. The Atlas is meant to break through an enemy position and take all comers, hence the varied loadout and it being able to damn well outgun and outlast the frekainÄ Locust that went behind it. The King Crab is meant to specifically *murder other assault Mechs* and blast open heavy fortifications. And it excels at that niche.
I love it as well I believe wholeheartedly that it is one of the three kings the three most powerful Mechs in the game those three consist of the king crab, the atlas, and finally the annihilator.

A point about lasers pun intended, sloped armor would have an impact on laser energy transfer because the surface area that the laser strikes will be greater. Have I done the math to figure out if it’d be statistically significant? NOPE but I’m posting anyway. Also the Marauder 2 is the only mech I enjoy looking at more than the KC for all the reasons I love the KC. Sloped armor. Reverse joint legs. High torso mount for long range weaponry. I'm just a sucker for that gigantic shoulder cannon.
This thing is my top mech in MW5. I have a full lance of nothing but King Crabs with CQB loadouts. Can absolutely wipe entire Atlas assault lances. Willing to wager a King Crab Lance could give a Timberwolf some major trouble. I own two King crabs for personal use. One with AC20s, and another with Gauss guns, never know when those clanners might show up, the Crab will be ready. They should use that excess space on the roof to mount the AC20s/Gauss guns up there and instead turn the Pincers into Giant flamehtrowers with serrated teeth. Why? Because fuck anything unfortunate enough to get into melee distance.
15:25 sloped armored helps against esplosives too, proper slopes can redirect some of the force of an explosion around the hull, especially if it's not a direct hit.
I love the skeleton paint of it to just see the derpy crab eyes on a mech that will obliterate you if you scratch it
As soon as I saw the mêlée-ac20 covers I immediately and irreversibly thought - HILLARIOUSLY - that SOMEONE scotch taped a pair of giant, dull bladed small rounded little kid scissors
Everything eventually evolves into crabs. Everything.
Remove the large laser and replace AC 20's with ultra 20's more dakka more fun
My fave Lance back in the day was a King Crab a Marauder and a Crab and a Locust the "Chicken leg Brigade"
King Crab is literally the best looking mech in the entire franchise, probably one of the more sensibly designed ones too. Low profile, flat, not a big fckin target like the rest of the mechs. Only issue are those goddamn arms, not only are they an useless dead weight, they also lower the height of the guns. Bc it seems no one heard about fighting hulldown in the inner sphere.
If I were building a Hero King Crab, I'd keep it simple - swap the AC20s for UAC10s (6 tons ammo), upgrade the Large Laser to ER Large Laser, and downgrade the LRM15 to LRM10 (1 ton ammo) to fit it all. Damage more spread out, but double the range on the UAC10s plus the ER on the LL means you can alpha strike out to 18 hexes. (Oh, and 15 Double Heat Sinks so that alpha strike only builds 4 heat.) All that and still costs less than 10 million C-Bills, with minimal advanced tech. One of the big tragedies of Battletech is we don't have a Heavy Mech Crab. The Crab is solid, the King Crab is feared, and I LOVE the Hermit Crab, but we need a good Heavy. (Yeah, yeah, I can already hear people pointing out the Marauder is a thing, but it isn't quite the same.) Though I suppose a lance with a Hermit Crab, a pair of Crabs, and a King Crab would still be a lot of fun.
2:45- I immediately remembered my King Crab Battletech card and..... Yes, you are correct 😑🤘
I don’t have ammo problems with my Kingcrabs. I just strip out unnecessary junk, like the LRMs, the LRM ammo, the large laser, and then I have another ten tons of AC20 ammunition and more heatsinks.
Mess with the KING CRABBO you get the KING STABBO!!!!

I painted mine like a hamburger and named it the Krabby Patty 🤷🏻♂️
The nastiest one I've ever played (and recreated in MW5 and BTA 3062) had light FF, a LT engine, UAC-10s in each arm and case II to protect the rediculous amount of ammo. Armor tonnage stayed the same, so more armor, longer range DAKKA, and I think I had added an extra LG laser. When I eventually got it switched over to DHS, it was just never-ending firepower. The guy running the tabletop game finally called it quits because the only way to challenge us was basically to bone us by fiat. Better to end the campaign on a high note.
The MW5 Kaiju is great. It has "Ebirah" painted on the right hip. Nice little shoutout to Godzilla.
I love the Behemoth because it's the Rottweiler to the Marauders Doberman. But the King Crab is up there.
You mess with Crabbo and you get the stabbo.
I really am a fan of the progression of Battletech art. I haven't really seen much of it since I played MW2-4 way back when, and some Inception game in MS DOS. But wow they have absolutely stepped up their art game. Like more than any other TT IP, I think.
Battletech: Here are the Atlas, King Crab and Mad-Cat. Me: Wow (puts all three in a recycling plant just to watch them burn) ill have a Maruader, please.
I love my build of 2 thunderbolts 5 2lbx 10s and a ppc just and watching everyone targets me and I disappeared
ide take 3 demolishers over this any day
Ah yes, the greatest headshot magnet in the entire franchise.
