4 Hands on Deck

4 Hands on Deck

Hello everyone! We are Green and Red, two Germans with a love for everything board game related and occasional fans of Let's play series. So much so, in fact, that we eventually wondered why those two didn't cross over more often... and the answer seems obvious: board games need recording equipment, post-production and music, whereas screens can be screen captured and all the special effects and sound are already present. So, eventually we decided, if we want more of it, we may as well step up ourselves!

On our channel, you can currently expect roughly one video per month, edited and cut, focussing on stories, atmosphere and full playthroughs with rules explained where necessary to help follow the action. We are not focussed on reviewing, you can make up your minds about the games yourselves after watching us play and banter. If that is up your alley, please enjoy!

    Of all the battle reports I watched on WH40k, Conquest or BattleTech. This one. This one is the best one, I hope I'll be able to see some more videos like this! (oh, and please don't hit the table while filming on the next video, if there is one)

    I'm new: can someone help me understand turn 2 movement sequence? Red won initiative, so Green moved first. 2 Green and 2 Red remained, so why did Green move again?

  • @4handsondeck
    @4handsondeck2 күн бұрын

    Teeeechnically we messed up. It should have been: green has three and needs to move first, red has two. 3 is not twice as many as two, so each moves one model. Then, green has two, red has one, 2 IS twice as many as one, so green needs to move two models. Green lost initiative, so he has to move both models before reds last move, allowing red to react despite having fewer units on the ground. So, you check units left to move before every 'pair' of moves, and if one player has whole multiples of the other or more (7vs3), he needs to move appropriately more models. (15vs3 would move 5 models for every 1 of his opponent). Hope that clairified things!

    Thank you! I really like your style. Subscribed. 26:27 You miss the extra +1 TMM for jumping I guess. An eight hexes jump by a spider should be a TMM +4. The Shadow Hawk in the same scene should had +2 (instead of +1, shown by the red die). I guess he jumped three hexes. I'm sorry but my inner monk has hard times dealing with this. btw When a mech stands up you can freely choose the direction (AGOAC). The Wolverine didn't have to pivot. You only roll the direction if the mech falls. This is important if the 'Mech has to fire from a prone position (e.g. because the Mech has lost a leg) to determine in which direction the Mech can fire. best

  • @4handsondeck
    @4handsondeck9 күн бұрын

    As for changing direction on standing up - yep, we missed rhar completely, but learned for later games. And I can calm your inner monk - we did not miss the TMM from jumping, we just dont show the +1from jumping with the pips, and just keep in mind that its an additional point for red dice!

    43:47 Is there a rule where if a friendly mech is in the adjacent space to the mech you're shooting at and you miss you have to roll for a possible hit on the friendly because they're so close together? Because it feels like there should be.

    As a matter of fact, there is! Its one of the many, many optional rules we opted not to use so far. If you use them all at once, things seriously bog down, and this video would be 8 hous long. And consist mostly of tutorials. Perhaps, when we covered all the base rules, we will include more optional rules.

    It's also possible to make your own wash in any custom color by diluting a color paint and mixing in a few drops of PVC glue. With this technique it's better to keep a separate old brush for applying washes, though. Because PVC particles in DIY washes will eventually destroy brushes used for this.

    A friend of mine once through armor crit a Comguard Atlas with a Scorpion light tank. It hit the AC-20 ammo,boom went an Atlas with a 1,1 pilot and their field commander. Due to a house rule if the field commander on a side (this was a 2v2 with one player on each team only allowed to bring conventional forces and the conventional forces on Comstar side were mercs duped into this mission against other mercs.) was KIA any unit from that player that is forced into forced withdrawal must make a check to see if they route or withdrawal orderly. If routing the unit can not make any attacks and moves as fast as it can away from any enemies. If enemies cut off its escape routing mechs are forced to either power down and surrender or eject while conventional ground units surrender if caught. While Comguard would technically hold the field by the end Merc forces escaped with the primary objective onboard that lucky Scorpion. Comstar only had one functional mech (A half-dead crab), a tank that was missing a track and one nearly dead infantry platoon left at the end. If counting successfully withdrawn units in the final tally of survivors that only gave Comstar two additional vehicles and a nearly dead Thunderbolt. Opposing mercs left the field with the objective, three tanks, a beat up dragon, two APCs that picked up inf on the way out and a Wolfhound.

  • @playerone2424
    @playerone2424Ай бұрын

    This is why I don't want to play with tanks, mechs only for me. They're too effective which makes the entire concept of mechs kind of pointless.

  • @4handsondeck
    @4handsondeckАй бұрын

    The main advantage of mechs over vehicles is twofold: 1: propaganda. 1 mech, 1 pilot. Easy to glorify into a hero, where vehicles have crews. 2: mobility. Vehicles are dangerous, but they're not as hardy when taking a beating, and they have issues with rough terrain, mountains, gulches, rivers, low gravity... Things that aren't always modeled on the table, but I wouldn't field vehicles in every mission profile... But for static defense? They shine, and rightfully so!

    i love the story focused battle report, hearing everyone react to stuff like the ammo explosions, the cheeky light mechs, and tristans inability to hit anything actually helped me understand the battle *more* than a pure numbers hyperdetailed report it also made me care a lot more! pendragon is so lucky to have gotten out in a drivable state i know fully naming and voicing the taurians too woulda been just too much if you wanted this video to come out ever, but still loved the moment where the taurian commander pieced together approximately what was going on really looking forward to whatever stories you have to tell next (maybe we'll even be lucky enough to see this comguard lance more than once ;) )

  • @playerone2424

    So a lower gunnery stat on pilots is preferable? That's counter intuitive but makes sense on the rolls.

    Fantastic production value and informational value with these videos. As a 40k player; it's really interesting to actually get to see the inner workings and guts of the games mechanics being played out. That said I am blown away by the sheer number of tables and counters to reference & keep track of; even for a relatively small model count game like this.

  • @4handsondeck
    @4handsondeckАй бұрын

    We played quite a bit of 40k - battletech goes with single mechs as models, where 40k uses 30-model-groups of mosha boyz, gaunts, or a tac squad of marines. every 40k group ends up having a bunch of special weapons and such, while being in the same place - which just ends up being roughly equivalent to a single mech with a bunch of weapons strapped on it, in terms of game feel. as for the number of tables? yeah, its a lot. however, on the other hand, its rather light on special rules, so you don't have to keep looking up stuff across 5 different books! and the tables are neatly pre-arranged in cheat sheets for ease of use and making copies for everyone involved!

    This game is rough! At least to me it looked like for most of the game the party was struggling just to hold their ground, let alone actually get more powerful. I appreciate the discussion about the mage in the afterword, because as it was that character did not look fun to play in the least. Consistently failing to do anything on your turn would be frustrating to me. More bonuses to intelligence seem almost required, because the mage doesn't have spare focus to manipulate dice like the other characters do.

    I am surprised that transports are rolled into the squad design and kind of abstracted away, but I suppose this game really doesn't need any more bookkeeping at the table. I'm not entirely convinced the actual play on the tabletop will be significantly improved based on how much customization is available, considering how simplified all the stats end up being. It almost feels like there was supposed to be a "squad scale" Battletech game that would have come out to make all these choices more relevant.

  • @4handsondeck
    @4handsondeckАй бұрын

    The amount of customization doesn't improve the gameplay on the table, thats true. but its still nice to see that you can create 'civilians throwing bottles' as well as 'professional assassines on bikes with sniper rifles and SRM launchers'. its more for the fluff side of things really. And as for the Transports - yes. mechanized infantry is rather simplified. that does, however, not stop you from creating foot infantry and sticking them in something like a goblin infantry support vehicle, to make proper 'squishies in a box'. also gives you the option for going with maxim hover transports, for example, and having infantry approach over water, have to disembark, get an objective from within a building, and having to retreat again. that in itself is already a nice mission-objective-based game.
