Lenovo Yoga 900 black flickering, intermittent or no video issue

After taking off the back side of this Lenovo Yoga 900 laptop I found the issue with the video screen going black, the flickering on or off, as moving the screen.
After cleaning the cable tip as noted, the issue was fixed by moving the cable to a better position and backing it away from the mobo. Pulling it out and away a little, yet still securely plugged in.
All n all, these cables wear out and should be completely replaced, but that’s a bitch, and this worked for me.
NOTE: While working on this video cable connector, it seems the motherboard would not start up again here and there and I needed to completely disconnect the battery, wait one full minute, then plug the battery back in and all was fine. So if you think your laptop is dead at some point, it’s not and just needs a reset in that way.
ANOTHER NOTE: Even with a proper Torx T6 , the screws on the case are a beeeeyatch to remove. Push your driver in hard, and slowly unscrew. If you strip one, get a 1/8” bit and drill it out. I had to drill out 4 screws. It’s ok this, there’s 10 of them holding the back on. Now 6.
I hope this helps someone with a head start! It’s not complete, but should help.

So taping the cable in the perfect place usually lasts a few weeks for me before failing. My current working solution: * Again, place a spacer (1-2 strips of cardstock) under the ribbon cable near the connector (i.e. do whatever you need to to get the cable in a position so your screen works) * Once you have a good location, place moldable plastic over the entire connection joint (e.g. Thermomorph, Instamorph, etc.) In theory, this should make the cable effectively immovable after you've carefully chosen a working position. Didn't work for me the first time, but the plastic pullled off easy. Reset the cable, did it again, and was golden. So far so good...

Here is the working solution: photos.app.goo.gl/forniWLo2taJYgwo6 Before, the monitor almost never worked--I had to open the lid in the perfect position every time I used the machine, and breathing on it could knock it out of alignment. With this solution, it has not flickered even one time in the past month. Definitely worth a shot before anything drastic (scrapping, replacing the motherboard, etc; even easier than replacing the cable, which didn't work for me).

Hey everyone. I've had this issue as well and its frustrating as hell. I took my machine to an official Lenovo service center and they recommended a new screen and new motherboard, the quote: $1500. Sure. Thanks for that. Luckily, I found this post and it gave me an idea that so far is working ok. On the beige colored strip that holds the LCD ribbon cable into the motherboard, I took a piece of very thin and flexible plastic and folded the ends underneath the main width, making a sort of spring like action. It looks like a staple that has been stapled, if you can visualize that. I taped that to the connector on the motherboard. Then, on the back of the bottom cover, I taped a piece of cardboard that would effectively apply pressure to that spring. I taped it to the back cover. then, when I screwed the back cover on to the laptop, I tightened as best I could without stripping the screws, which are lousy quality and easy to strip. So far, so good. Oh, and I did have to unplug the battery and wait a few minutes before re-connecting. I freaked out when the PC wouldn't start, but I read the comment and calmed down. Now, everything is working. This issue is annoying as it gets, considering how expensive this laptop was. And, its not my first issue. I had a problem with ghost bubbles/touches on the screen after a windows update so I disabled the touchscreen driver. Now, it won't let me enable the touchscreen function again. Luckily, I'm not a big touchscreen guy, but the whole 2-in-1 function is basically worthless on this machine. I am going to ride this fix until it starts cutting out again and then I'll buy a new machine. thanks to the original poster and the comments for this as I was a bit lost with what to do after getting the ridiculous quote, so you guys have helped me get some additional life out of this thing. Thanks!

@@ta6847 So far, so good. The only issue I have had has been when the screws that hold on the back cover get loose. Then it will start to flicker a little bit. Once I tighten the screws a bit, the issue goes away. I need to figure out a way to make the screws stick. Other than that, its holding up ok.

Right now, my working solution is: * Place thin piece of cardboard (~cereal box thickness) under the cable * Tape the cable down on top of the cardboard For me, it might be a loose solder joint, but it may not be feasible to re-solder. Replacing the motherboard seems like the next step if it came to that.

Hello, wanted to leave my piece here :) I went to 4 services with that, two didn't even want to look down on the issue, second was "we can change tape, then lcd, then maybe motherboard" - and I did not agree to that as I read here changing tape or screen didn't help. And of course all the workcost would be on my side ;) Fourth service, after 5-day diagnosis, called me that the motherboard is faulty and needs fixing (not changing to new, just fixing, some faulty paths probably, I will dig deeper when I will pick up the fixed laptop). I've agreed. The cost is 900zl, on today exchange rate it would be 245$ or 200E. I guess it's fair price, it's still good, and comparable computer is like 3x the fixing price.
