LEGO is NOT MORE EXPENSIVE?

Ойын-сауық

Perhaps the biggest LEGO shilling in history occurred over the weekend in an article on Brickset where the writer claimed that in 30 years the price of LEGO sets hasn't really changed. Price Per Piece as a sole evaluation of a LEGO set's value is flawed and will only become more flawed as LEGO pieces stop shrinking and prices keep rising. There are many concrete examples of LEGO Star Wars sets going UP in price such as Battle Packs going from $10 in 2007 to $20 in 2022. The UCS Death Star Playset's $100 price increase in 2016. LEGO Collectible Minifigures were $2 in 2010, they're now $5...

Honestly. They should’ve let the current sets finish their lifetime on shelves with their old prices. Increasing prices on sets that have already been available for cheaper is beyond infuriating when the average income has not increased. If they want to make future sets more expensive, understandable. But don’t touch what’s already existent !

What’s also frustrating is that Lego themselves never told us exactly which sets would increase and by how much. They said it would happen, but never specified which sets. We had to piece it together from Barnes and Noble and rumored Promobricks lists. But that only works for internet savy lego enthusiasts. Even then, it wasn’t a complete list. General consumers had no chance and no warning. Lego could’ve had a big bump in sales if they gave us the list and we’d be able to buy out the sets before the price increase.

Keep the old sets the same price, and also don't increase the price of new sets a month after they released (either release them at the higher price to begin with or don't raise the price at all), and raise the price of future sets to keep up with inflation. That's literally what LEGO has always done, I don't see why they couldn't have continued with that business model instead of increasing prices on almost their entire back catalog. (Well I do see why they did it this way, the answer is greed.) Sets are only available for 3-4 years max (many only 1 or 2 years), and they release hundreds of new sets every year.

Surely, the prices have gone up. Statistically speaking, most of the things go up in price as time passes by; it is the case for toys at most, it is no surprise, but denying it might be an issue. LEGO has generally gone up in price, however not in all categories, because different licenses cost differently over time. For instance, LEGO City has minimally go up in price, or even haven't go up in price at all whatsoever - but when it comes to LEGO Star Wars the sets have genuinely go up in price. All things considered, LEGO prices increase gradually, because the cost of production per piece has increased significantly, regardless of the fact whether the LEGO industry has been more automated or not.

Price per piece works under the assumption that every piece has the exact same value attached to it. That hypothetical buyer would be equally happy with 100 1x1 tiles and 100 16x16 plates, 100x 2x2 pink bricks and 100x 2x2 tan or gray bricks, 100 of the same random piece and 100 of a good mix of pieces... you get the idea. And I guess it isn't the case for anyone.

Mark Stafford had an interview and one of the points he makes is that he used smaller technic axles and that RAISED the price already set before he designed. He thought a bigger axle would bring up the price BUT it was the smaller axle that actually raised the price. He found out it was where it was made, the particular factory, the older mold, shipping parts from that factory, all factored into price. So even weight of the item can't be a true measure. Lego makes parts all at different factories, much like components on electronics and appliances, etc. From various places around the world, then put together in one place and this process done right can lower costs for those companies. So Lego does the same, and you factor in new molds, new printed parts, new graphics being done, the way they marketed it, the licensing agreements that we know NOTHING about how much the deal they made with Disney, etc. The bank loans they get, the interest rates we know nothing about, that can fluctuate. The raw material costs. The employees and designers with different salaries (raises, benefits, etc.), the overhead on all their properties, etc. And much more, put into an equation to get to a price is something we cannot know all the details about. Best to collect what you REALLY like, not for aftermarket, DON'T be a completest and truly enjoy the hobby. Big sets you want, truly sacrifice and save, and in few months, you can own that big UCS set. I do this, I look for deals, save over time and have been a happier collector for it. I even sell some sets that I loved, I just takes good pics and keep those as mementos of my collection. Car and motorcycle collectors do this all the time. Don't let the price increases ruin your love of the hobby. There's ways to sacrifice, trade, sell and SAVE to get the kits you REALLY want. It's much better that way.

  • @flow2081

This is by far the best way to look at this situation. If you think a set is to expensive, but you really want it, why not or search for a better deal, or save up money for the set in a couple of months. Here in the Netherlands the resellers of lego sets don't sell new sets for the same price as lego does. I got the justifier for example for 133 euros (around 135 dollars I believe), after which I sold all figures (excluding cad bane) because I just wanted the ship and Bane. The set itself has cost me around 50 euros and I still have one of the figures. The AT-TE is for example 110 euros, the inquisitor scythe 84. Even darth vader vs obi wan was 38 euros. I know this is probably not the same in other countries, but it depends mainly on where you buy these sets. You just need to pick what sets you actually want, it's a personal decision.

The inflation rate combined from the last 2 years totals to over 15%. I completely understand LEGO increasing their prices for new sets. I also can see their reasoning behind increasing the prices on sets like the UCS Falcon which have been out for 5 years. However... What I can't comprehend, is their justification for increasing prices of sets that have only been on shelves since January or last summer. Riddle me this: the Ideas Typewriter - released in June of 2021 at $199.99. Increases in price to $249.99 a year later. A 25% price increase, which if my math serves me right, outpaces the TWO YEAR inflation rate by 10%. Sounds a whole lot like taking advantage of their new adult demographic. If they keep this up, I can promise LEGO that they will wish they hadn't pissed off their largest customer base with the largest disposable income because they will be "disposing" their income elsewhere.

Last year the line was wrapped around the mall. Also of the sets released on August 1 only two of them are currently out of stock the Obi-Wan Kenobi Darth Vader brickheadz and the mini Disney haunted mansion. The article kind of shoots itself in the foot at the end with this line: "everything around us is getting more expensive and our income is struggling to keep up, likewise our hobbies become harder to fund because of competing financial priorities." The article's main argument is that lego's Price Per Piece has remained consistent despite inflation, but the above quote acknowledges that people's wages have not kept up with inflation making lego unaffordable to income brackets that could afford it. That's an admission that Lego sets are more expensive than they used to be, the price per piece argument is a distraction.

As someone from an eastern european country (Bulgaria), It's only recently that i've gotten into lego (i'm 23), simply cause of the price. Given the price of lego, and the kinds of paychecks people receive over here, unless you're making multiple 3000+ lev per month, it's hard to justify purchasing lego sets. And even then it's hard to justify larger sets. 2 months ago is literally the first time i had ever owned actual lego.

The reason why occasionally licensed theme sets have absurd pricing (such as Gervious' star fighter) is because Lego release a certain amount with no cross subsidy to try and prove the demand / supply curve to disney - that disney will make more money with a lower licensing fee because the volume will be much higher. They constantly throw in a set at least once per year to do this to benchmark how high the licensing should go.

I once did some calculations, where I compared castles or comparable sets compared from different decades. I looked not at price per piece as the author of that article had done, but at how much such a set would hurt the average person: how much does an average person from for example the 1980s make, how much does he on average spend on stuff like rent and such (and thus, how much does he have left), and thus how big a percentage of that available money would such a legoset be. Would it cost you a few percent of the money you have left each month to buy a castle, or would you have to save for a few months? I don't remember the details (I wanted to have a more detailed look, but haven't had the time yet), but I do remember that lego from the 1960s and 1980s was relatively more expensive than lego from the 2010-2020s: it would hurt the average persons wallet more if they bought a castle in the 1980s then in the past decade. Of course the past few months might shake things up again, and I do need to look more into it, but still, to me it showed that relatively speaking older sets cost more than sets from the past decade.

Wanted to buy the AT-AT saw it increased by 50 dollars… taxes and shipping added another 60 came out to be 910 dollars and decided yea that’s pretty crazy… I feel for people and parents that can’t afford what LEGO has to offer

Surely, the prices have gone up. Statistically speaking, most of the things go up in price as time passes by; it is the case for toys at most, it is no surprise, but denying it might be an issue. LEGO has generally gone up in price, however not in all categories, because different licenses cost differently over time. For instance, LEGO City has minimally go up in price, or even hasn't go up in price at all whatsoever - but when it comes to LEGO Star Wars the sets have genuinely go up in price. All things considered, LEGO prices increase gradually, because the cost of production per piece has increased significantly, regardless of the fact whether the LEGO industry has become more automated or not.

In plastic molding the cost of a 'mold cavity' is the same whether it's a large piece or small piece. Molded part size doesn't factor into the cost when making the tooling. So if Lego is making more pieces (even tho they are smaller) then their tooling costs are going up and they have to recoup that cost somehow. The fastest way is to raise the prices.
