Lego Investing Is Booming. Here’s How It Works | Niche Markets | WSJ

Researchers say Lego grows in a similar way to other collectibles, like wine or art, but outperforms them over time.
Lego fans and collectors are buying and selling the plastic toys for profit, and seeing better average returns than for many other assets like stocks, gold and art. Here’s how Lego investing works, and why this lesser known market punches above its weight. Photo illustration: Adam Adada

The speculators tend to cause the Lego group to over estimate the demand for sets. Collectors and casual consumers are what grew the hobby. Speculators can ruin it. People see the returns and think they can do the same without knowledge. I’m glad we have people that resale parts and sets. It’s definitely not easy. But I think there are things that can harm the hobby. Never thought I would see a video talking about Lego affordability. Odd way to describe it. Sealed set selling is too annoying for me. The concept of supply and demand has existed since the dawn of time. Some people invest in cars, or wine, art, watches, antiques, toys, or a million other possibilities. Are they all scalpers and spoiling the fun for everyone else? Of course not. Rare items increasing in value is an economic principle that's been around forever. If you didn't get around to buying something when it was readily available, why would you expect to get it for the same price when it's no longer on the market? People will always pay a premium for something that is rare. Lego is no exception, so why do some people expect it to be any different to any other product or commodity?

The term 'scalpers' is meant for people that buy things like music concert tickets with no intention of going - tickets with a very limited supply, for one venue, on one specific date. Whereas Lego sets are on the shelves for anything between 1 and 5 years, and are available online and in stores worldwide. So if someone wants to buy 10 identical sets during that time, they are not scalping, because anyone can buy those same sets (as many as they like, at retail price or on discount), within the same time window. It sounds like investors are being labelled 'scalpers' by people that are either jealous (because they don't have the time, or money, or space available), or they don't really understand the term scalpers properly (or indeed the Lego investing market). There's plenty of stock for everyone - kids, adults, builders, and resellers/investors. Just enjoy it, and if you want a set - then just buy it at retail or discounted when its readily available. Simple.

That term is for people like touts, that buy sports or gig tickets - exploiting a very limited supply of a commodity over a very short period. As my post clearly states - anyone can buy any Lego set (in any country in the world...) on any day of the year whilst its still in stock. But when something is no longer available, then the price goes up. That fundamental law of economics has existed since the dawn of time, and is the foundation of basic trading. A defined number of Lego sets retire every single year, and a list of these sets is even on their website. If you think Lego investors are buying up all the stock, then I think you'll find the reality is that over 99% of the sets sold are bought by people that build and play with them (or give them as gifts). If you're not in that 99%, then don't blame the 1%....

@@big.boi_v1795 If those 50 sets were the last 50 in the whole world, then you'd have a point. But Lego will always keep making sets until they retire - and until that point, they respond to market demand. They don't launch a set with a fixed sales/stock figure in mind - if people buy more, then they simply keep making more. There are still 70 sets on the Lego UK website available to buy which were all due to retire in December. Many of them are tipped to be great for investing, so the idea that investors are 'buying up all the stock' is a total myth - otherwise they'd have all sold out in December. Paying more for a product that's no longer available is a universal law of economics for every commodity in the world. If I want to buy something that's no longer in stock, then it's my fault for not getting it when it was freely available in stores or online. If I still want that product, then I'd expect to pay more - whether it's a car, a watch, a bottle of wine, or a Lego set...

True, while these people aren’t enjoying the build, they’re preserving sets to be enjoyed by others who discover a set after retirement. My family has been enjoying many retired modular buildings b/c someone chose to leave it on a shelf for years after it retired. It’s kinda like a museum auctioning off pieces of history so their stories can live on in those who came after the object’s time.

Although I like my set to have value, I sincerely hope people don't "invest" in this kind of thing. It is purely because there are already so many cases where all these "investors" that have near to no interest in the thing itself and purely looking out for monetary gain just destroy the hobby. Lego is precious not because of the set rarity alone, it is because it has a community, and there will be no community if people cannot afford it.

What seems to be missing is a lot of expenses and equivalency. Storage, even if it’s an empty room in your house is still an expense that can be calculated. It’s estimated an extra living space is worth 5.9 percent on average. Like if you paid 300,000 for a house and are using the extra room as storage, that’s 17,700 storage expense, not even factoring in the terms of the mortgage, which I would assume significantly increases that number. Shelving cost, personal time put in, are all expenses that can be calculated also. Equivalency also seems to be missing. Average inflation year to year has been around 3.5 percent, and even higher the last couple of years. I would love to see these factored into the profit. It seems like the break even point is actually a lot higher than original retail value.

Lego investing reminds me of what happened to Beanie Babies. Everyone bought those cute stuffed animals because they were exclusive when the company stopped making them. It got to the point where no one was buying them because anyone actually wanted them - just to resell them. I think that Lego has more utility than a stuffed animal, but I worry that in the future a lot of people will be stuck with sets that no one is willing to pay for.

As someone who collected comic books as a kid hoping to make a fortune, collectibles are not a very good investment and are highly speculative based on trends. There is also the problem of inventory and ensuring items are maintained in good condition because often times they are at high risks of damage. My mother is getting into vintage and antique items through thrift shops hoping she can make a fortune or getting a good deal but these items are taking up way too many space and prone to damage. People think collectibles gain value over time but from my experience it can greatly depreciate. I had a comic book worth $30, 10 years ago and now it’s only selling for $5. In fact it doesn’t seem like the comic book industry is very hot. I’ve seen older comics at collectors shop sell much lower than what it was a decade ago!

Except to a certain extent, legos are more timeless. Children and adults will always enjoy building and creativity. Comics are also much more mass produced and different media can replace them much more easily than lego in the digital age. And this guy isn't saying to buy and hold for 50 years expecting to be a millionaire, he sells them within years before they go into obscurity. He's not expecting to make a fortune, he's only trying to beat the stock market.

  • @jon6309

    @jon6309

@@jettrooper101 he may beat the stock market in returns but at the cost of his inconvenience. Legos are illiquid assets and it requires a lot of work to try and flip them. I always preferred stocks over any investment asset only because of the liquidity and how easy it is to sell my positions once the price is high. For legos and comics you need to find a buyer who is willing to pay for it and just because the same Lego was recently sold at a certain price does not mean the next buyer is willing to pay the same price. There is also inventory risk if he can’t flip them fast enough. It’s not like he has a warehouse to store all of them and even if he did it’s going to cost a lot of money to do so! He seems to be operating from his house, if his inventory starts to appear as hoarding that’s going to cause a lot of domestic problems and the possibility of divorce which is going to cost him much more than his own collection 😂

As with the rise and fall of economy, you have to wait till it’s the right time to sell it when you can get top dollar which is not right now.l when people are selling because they need cash to live. You also need adequate space to store and protect these sets for the long haul. Additionally you need to keep in mind the fees and shipping that go along with selling as well as the tax reporting that comes with places such as eBay and PayPal.

I wouldn't worry about that because Lego is an expensive toy. It's not as accessible as a pack of trading cards. Lego collecting is not something new. It's just becoming more mainstream. But even mainstream collectors/investors can't ruin it. The value of rare lego sets, parts, and minifigures is always going to be high. It may come down a bit... but there will always be buyers for Lego. People are passionate about Lego for a variety of reasons... the monetary value is only a small part of the toy's appeal.

Lego investors are awful. I've worked in an auction house before and I've seen people get disappointed when their "$10000 priced item" (because they saw someone else asking the same for it) only for it to been sold for a few hundred bucks because no one wanted it. Lego investors work the same way where they see someone posted something on ebay for a ridiculous high price and now suddenly everyone thinks thats what its worth. I saw a new star wars set being sold for $75 + another $10 for shipping when you can go to target and get it for $40. It just got released and people are thinking they can make +25% profit within weeks of its release. No if you do that you're dumb. Then theres the minifigs. No lego minifig should be $20 or more. Thats insane. I can see if there were some really old sets or having a limited release like the chrome c3po but a normal clone trooper? Screw that. I get people want to make money but all this is doing is ruining it for people who just want the set and don't care about resell value. Maybe some child really liked a certain Minecraft set and wanted to buy it. The msrp was $40 but now its $200. If you're going to do investments with lego, at least be smart about it and make it a price people don't look at and say "wow you're an idiot" because it'll just sit as "for sale" for years and no one will buy it. If they weren't going to buy it cheaper before, what makes you think in 2 months they're want to spend more?

If you buy a set and hold it for a number of years in sealed condition then resell it after it is no longer available on the new retail market then how is that scalping? You have an in demand product which people value

Scalping is selling something for higher when it’s still in stock (like concert tickets before the concert happens and they’re still being sold). This is setting aside an object for when it retires, no longer sold on stores, but people will still want it.demand continues to grow as new people enter the hobby, but a finite supply dwindles down as they’re sold off. That’s how money is made. Now I’ve discovered it’s not as easy as this video suggests, but it’s not immoral, scalping, or unfair. It’s definitely not for everyone, not easy, and not “get rich quick”

Cool. Lucas is one of those guys that has 5 or 6 of the same set in his shopping cart, while I'm saying to my kids, "oh well, sorry guys." I can't stand people like this. Ninjago sets? Think of the kids dude. You're a Father yourself.

Investors better not make the prices crash beanie baby style. Lego fans have a good thing going right now. Plus big time AFOLs just buy the sets they want anyway so in the future nobody is gonna be trying to get a UCS falcon when basically everyone that wants one has one

There’s also always going to be new people that come into the collecting hobby after a bunch of sets have retired, discover all that was once available, and decide the higher price is worth reaching back into time and collecting the series. That’s what I’ve been doing with modular buildings. I wasn’t interested for years, but now my family has taken interest and I’ve appreciated all the NIB retired sets available…yes for a high cost, but that’s the price of “going back in time” to complete a collection.

I kind of really hate this… I just want to be able to buy and enjoy a set that I never got as a kid. But when I see people hoarding them, like gold bricks, forcing the price far beyond what I can afford, it really annoys me. Of course, people can do whatever they want with their legos 🙄

Hoarding them increases the supply of retired sets, actually making them more capable to acquired long after their retirement, compared to if nobody hoarded them. The supply would dry up quick as everyone immediately opened their boxes.

Lego isn't like Nvidia, making a few thousand units and then stopping, letting scalpers increase the value. They sell more than enough sets which will always be sold at the same price or lower (not counting the inflation increase). People who price it more than msrp on ebay think they can get a 150% profit when the set is still there, they aren't the smartest tool in the shed. After Lego retires them, the price goes up, because the sets are no longer produced by Lego, investors are good because it gives an opportunity for people to buy the set after it was retired.

@@Goblonium i think this is great for sets produced after 2010. but im not seeing how this is good for older sets that are already rare and hard to find. keeping 10 copies of one set seems to make it only possible for rich people to buy. but hey- im complaining because im poor and i couldn't afford the sets when i was a kid 😅
