New subscriber because of this video - one of the best breakdowns of the different Lego investing categories. A great follow up video would be the best categories in terms of time - which categories shoot up in value as soon as they retire and which ones take a little time, and the best time to sell (initial pop after retirement, Q4, special event [e.g. release of movie], or long term hold).

Jake, I agree on Lego Duplo. As a fellow Lego Dad, it can be annoying to build with. Yet it's challenged me to get creative and level up my animal game. Additionally I think there are two types of investors: 1. The completionist - wants all the Lego Batman sets (even the Duplo) 2. The parent who wants to play with a Jurassic World Dino (Batman or whatever) with their kid. But I also use my kids Duplo to add height to my Lego Mocs and keep the weight down. No need to fill the giant Lego mountain with Lego bricks when Duplo are cheaper.

Regarding Ninjago, a surprisingly high amount of fans are in their late teens are early 20's, basically AFOL newbies. That's because the themes been going on for 10+ years now to the kids that grew up watching the show have grown into young adults. And as young adults, they've now got a disposable income and nostalgia to spend it on. It's crazy how much some of these fans are willing to spend on older sets from their childhood and that that nostalgia extends to newer sets to a degree because they are still invested in the theme. Ninjago did something Lego Friends didn't: it retained its fans. While the expectation for Friends is that you outgrow it, that didn't really happen with Ninjago because the theme kept a singular continuity and Lego making sets specifically targeted at older fans. You think a 10 year old is going to shell out for Ninjago City Gardens? No way fam, those sets are for the older fans or even non-Ninjago fans who just want a cool, Japanese inspired building. But I think there is a lot of uncertainty regarding Ninjago. With a theme like Star Wars, it's been a proven success. But Ninjago is so experimental and "new" that most hardcore investors (who are older than Ninjago's young and old fans) don't really know what to make of it. It's totally foreign to them. I think their general mentality is "Huh? Ninjago's still going? Why is it still going? But wait, it's been selling for 11 years now and has some massive successes, is that indicative of a safe investment?" We've only just hit the point were investors are realizing that it might be viable and it'll be a few more years until an opinion is formed on it. But for what it's worth, I think Ninjago's probably a decent investment. The Brick Quest calculated each theme's average increase in price and Ninjago was number 5 overall. This was above reputable themes like Harry Potter, Marvel, and Creator Expert. I know some investors are skeptical and it's almost certainly because they are so in the dark when it comes to Ninjago. But I anticipate that even the new sets you got will see a significant price increase because the Ninjago fanbase will look back on those sets with nostalgia in 2 years and combined with the niche tribal and underwater theming will attracting non-Ninjago fans. The Seabound wave is the closest thing Lego has gotten to Lego Atlantis since, well, Lego Atlantic over 10 years go. You just need to look at the recently retired Prime Empire and Master of the Mountain sets to see that these newer waves will likely be popular. Those waves were also niche but the prices are rising at a steady rate. I may be bias as a Ninjago fan but I also think that means my ear is closer to the ground than most of high profile Lego investors who can't make heads or tails of Ninjago. But from where I stand, Ninjago is just going to go up. I think pretty much every set will yield some kind of success but the real trick will be finding the big ticket items like the Ninjago City series and Dragon sets. Those catapult Ninjago from a good investment into a great one.

Like yourself, over the years have made gains and mistakes … but i also like you mentioned, don’t really get involved in small sets anymore and only really invest in the larger sets of which theme I’m investing in at the time. Very interesting, although I will argue some in this list. Personally, I am not a duplo collector but am quite surprised to see it beat some of the themes. For star wars, to determine which sets to get, is typically after a year or 2 (If they hadn't retired), look up brickset and see their minifig pricing. Sets that are well over 1000+ pieces are generally winners. Anyways, there's a theme you missed out. The ghostbusters with 2 sets (75827 and 75828). While they may not be exactly 200 300% fold, sets like 75827 can make well over $300 in profit.

So with the price increases coming on august 1st this may be your last chance to get it at $400. I usually stray away from investing in sets that I have to hold for 2+ years till they retire… but this set regardless of how long it is on the shelves I think will do great post retirement. I am planning to pick up a couple today to hold on to and I will look for deals on more over the next couple years.

I collect Technic and Speed Champions because #1 I like them #2 the price per piece makes sense. The Land Rover has over 2500 pieces and sells for $159 and has a ton of MOCs out there. Yet there are sets that have around 200 pieces and sell for $40. Doesn’t make sense to me so started to collect microfighters and Battle packs to sell as bundles in the future, they seem to have done well in the past couple years.

Sorry for all the comments but I add them as I go through the video DUPLO : sells well to the parents because they consider them as “educational” and want to or think they will give their kids a step up or give their children an “edge” over other kids prior to starting school particularly with fine motor skills. DUPLO that has the alphabet or numbers are almost guaranteed to be winners if part of another theme such as Disney or with animals Ie: animals with numbers or letters sell well and because we want our kids to be smarter we will part with the $$$

@@pringleaddict5827 If people didn't "invest" most ordinary people might be able to afford to get retired sets. It's not just supply and demand, it's spivs, looking to get rich quick, scalping sets, flipping them for stupid money that only "investors" can afford and then crowing about it on KZread. Even a basic set of Lego bricks these days goes for stupid money given what they cost new - because people think they're entitled to a return on their "investment"! Of course, if you don't see the problem, then there's little point in trying to educate you on it.
