Lee was nervous because he couldn't carry a tune to save his life. But, this song was a hit and he earned a gold record. I can't imagine this song being sung by anybody else. Sometimes imperfection can be a plus.

Lee Marvin's lack of a singing voice is what nade the song so powerful. Lee gave us the contemplative feelings of a lonely, homeless, wanderer. The character he protrayed in this movie. A better voice couldn't give us that.

I was in this movie and was talking with Lee Marvin just before we started shooting this scene. We were talking about a movie I was in with Elvis called Double Trouble. I was in the band with Elvis as his lead guitar player in the film. The producer of Double Trouble was Judd Bernard who was the producer of a movie called Point Blank starring Lee Marvin. Lee was telling me how he and Judd has a little understanding before he agreed to do the film. Lee told me that the agreement was that he got to do his thing and the producer got to do his thing. In Lee's case it was to get to take a nip or two whenever he liked. Lee also took a nip or two during the filming of Paint Your Wagon. Which was a blast to make by the way. Three or four hundred hippies high as kites playing drunken gold miners. It doesn't get any more surreal than that. What a way to spend the Summer of 1969 living in the mountains 50 miles out of Baker City, Oregon. A time I will never forget.

Miss you Dad - sorry I was such a grump, I’ll be seeing you and Mom again sometime ❤️💔❤️

Lee Marvin was one of my favorite actors.
Watched all the old Westerns with my Dad, when l was a kid growing up in the seventies. We loved them all. Shane, Rio Bravo, Magnificent Seven, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. All of ‘em. Dad loved this one too. For some reason, one way or another we never watched this one fully together. Now he is gone, and it saddens me we didn’t. One day Dad, one day.❤
Lee Marvin's lack of a singing voice is what nade the song so powerful. Lee gave us the contemplative feelings of a lonely, homeless, wanderer. The character he protrayed in this movie. A better voice couldn't give us that.
My dad used to sing it to me when I was a baby
Loved the movie and I cried when I first saw and heard this song back in 1969. Still did just that watching it today, in May 2024.

Hi Melissa

Hi Nadien
Perfecta versión, perfecta interpretación, imposible imaginarse a otro intérprete, una canción hecha para El
Well sung, Lee, old roughneck ; perfect for this lovely musical.
Years later this is still epic ❤❤❤
My mum bought this for me for my 8th birthday i used to sing all the time 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄i absolutely loved it jx
Don’t know how I found myself here - fair and square down Memory Lane. Dad loved this film - he and Mom took us to see it on a rainy day whilst on holiday in Paignton, Devon. Being a brat I complained as I never expected to love the film like I did. I lost my dear Dad in May this year how I wish I could turn back the clock. Miss you Dad - sorry I was such a grump, I’ll be seeing you and Mom again sometime ❤️💔❤️

Hello 👋 Kim. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Scott Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
My late father always spoke of this scene and song,Saying “Lee Marvin isn’t singing he’s thinking and talking out loud” Nice one Dad.

Same as Clint. Both were very nervous about singing at first, but they were told to just sing in their natural tone as they spoke. Made a great movie.
The entire production with the backing choir is just friggin awesome.!!
My Dad loved this tune, 35 years after his death it's one of my favourites. Lee couldn't carry a note but he made this tune his own.
God...what a voice lee marvin had 💖💖💖💖💖
