My dad passed during the first wave of corona in Spain. It hit us hard. There was no funeral, nor we could not see the body. No people in the cementery. I humbled this song as I walked behind his closed casket as it was his favourite song. Miss you dad

Lee Marvin was a genuine war hero. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was wounded in 1945 during the battle of Saipan. He was awarded a Purple Heart. Semper Fi Marine. Rest in Peace.

I watched a Johnny Carson show once Lee Marvin was on talking about WWII, he was shot in the butt, couldn't walk so Captain Kangaroo carried him out on his shoulder, that actor was Bob Keeshan, he was the War hero

In fact, Bob Keeshan served in the Marines he never saw combat much less ever being at Iwo Jima. Lee Marvin was NOT shot in the buttocks but was hit in the buttocks with shrapnel which served his sciatic nerve. As a former Marine I can assure you that anyone who FOUGHT at Iwo Jima is a hero. It took guts and nerves of steel to step off those landing boats and onto the beaches of Iwo Jima. Signed - Veteran USMC (1965/70).

I remember this song from the spring of 1970 [No 1 for 3 weeks BBC Charts], although I was just 11 at the time. Along with Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge over Troubled Water it kept the Beatles last single - Let it Be - off the No 1 slot. This was Lee's only record, but he was not really a singer, he was a Western actor, but this song is from his musical western Paint Your Wagon. I seem to remember that the B side was by another normally non-singing Western actor Clint Eastwood from the same film. Perhaps this single was released prior to the release of the full soundtrack album of the film. I did not get to see Paint your Wagon for nearly another decade, when I, by then a young adult, visited relatives in London on New Year's Day 1980 and it was shown on TV that afternoon.

was a just a kid, but my dad was a bit of a race/rally driver. We were in the pit..so was Lee Marvin...all we wanted was orange pop. I am 63 now and I still think he is a manly man.

The song was successful because it never has perfect pitch. It makes it sound authentic. Like an old guy singing along, but hardly aware of the background choir.

Yes! So much soul and emotion lost in the auto-tuned music of today. Everybody trying their best ot outdo Mariah Carey's 250-million octave range. It's just awful.

This song is a great example of not needing a great voice if the song is perfectly matched to you. "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's is another.

He has a beautiful, sexy gravelly voice which doesn’t care who likes it or not ❤️🌹

I have played and loved this gem since 1969. In the 80s, when our kids were small,. they used to tease me sarcastically by imitating Lee's gravely voice when I played it. No more! They love it now! The movie was great, too. The legendary Clint Eastwood didn't hurt, either! It was also played at the funeral of a friend of mine who also used to work in the music business. It seems he had chosen this classic ahead of time.

No matter who, where or when....this is a song for everybody.

I sing this when I'm wild camping in lakes n Wales especially walking at night looking up at the stars I think of Lee Marvin . A true tough guy.

For a man who was not by any measure a singer, did a finer than fine job of it- he even got a hit single out of it! I met him once back in 1976 out in Montauk, NY, I was suck do to fog- working on my Commercial Pilot Certificate and he was there for Blue Fin Tuna! Thought it was interesting that I would be bunking out in the airplane!

I believe Lee Marvin couldn't sing, so each word was literally was recorded individually. Whatever still a classic. Could be my theme song; left home at 16, lived in the UK, Germany, US......

When I learned to play the harmonica 40 years ago I played this song from memory even though I couldn't read a link of music. Now at 60 I can still play it by heart. The song touched me

I have loved this song all my life. Love Lee Marvin too. An unaffected down to earth real man and a decorated veteran. I guess this is my themevsong too, I am a veteran, 69 this year and been to more countries than my age. I still wake up every day with the travel lust, i ride motorcycles every week ( I keep two). The wind in my face and the sound of the road and the straight through exhausts calms me. Stay safe all you fellow wanderers.

Looks like this is a song from a strong generation of caring people. I have come to listen to this as it is my dad's choice for his funeral and he sadly passed away yesterday. He always used to sing this song and would watch all the old war and cowboy films when I was younger. Read some of these comments brings me a sense of warmth and comfort to know others loved this like he did. Rest in peace dad xxx

Lee Marvin wasn't known for singing but still he made this song sound so beautiful. One of my late fathers favourite song but when my father use to play this song I used to tell him, why do you keep playing this crap song over and over again and he said to me, son one day you'll learn to appreciate this song. Dad was right once again.

mad Jack was his handle...Eastwood had a small part in the classic movie of1970..... the theatre where I saw PAINT YOUR WAGON had to have a larger screen,, and the projectionist said the film was twice as large as the usual...and 4 big speakers were installed....and---ONLY SMOKE can make me cry

Funny story.. My grandpa loved lee Marvin (particularly this movie too) and all the classics like gene autry, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, etc. my grandpa passed away some time ago and I have named my son after him; his name is Gene. Ironically, this is actually the ONLY song that will calm him down and put him to sleep. I know my grandpa is looking over him somewhere from up there.

My father is still alive and too it's a fan of these actors and they movies. I particulary like so much John Wayne and Lee Marvin, or Clint Eastwood. And i liked her so much too-Jean Seberg-for this movie. Such a good notice that you like too these kind of movies. psd: I'm Spanish, i'll hope that this no not note a very, hahaha.

This used to be one of my grandpa’s favorite songs. When I listen to it it reminds me of him and then I know he’s still with me. It’s been a year since he passed away, I still miss him so much

As a kid my mother used to tell me that I was born under a wandering star. I left home at 16 and I'm now 51. My mother died 2 Christmases ago and I'm still wandering. RIP MAM. RIP MR MARVIN.

This has to be the best example of a movie musical full of unlikely singers . I mean who'd think of Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood as musical stars! Brilliant brilliant job.

Another favourite of my husbands .l play it and remember him singing it as he painted a wall.

Look how many great actors of his era served this country during war. Hero all of them.!!!

Yes. Like Jimmie Stewart for one. He didn't hide in the USO "entertaining troops". He risked his life many, many times flying B-24 bombers over occupied Europe. He was a REAL hero.

Henry Horner well Jimmy Stewart bombed civilians so he should have been stopped in my opinion, WW2 was a horrific war and noone should take pride in it.

It became a world hit wonder classic without fail or doubt guaranteed. That goes to those many who thought Le Marvin couldn't sing.

I was born on Easter Sunday 29th March 1970 and this song was number 1 in the charts. Feeling blessed x
