My dad passed during the first wave of corona in Spain. It hit us hard. There was no funeral, nor we could not see the body. No people in the cementery. I humbled this song as I walked behind his closed casket as it was his favourite song. Miss you dad

The common criticism is that Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood couldn't sing. In the traditional sense they couldn't but for this movie and the songs they sang they were perfect. Too bad so many didn't get it.

@@ruthgreen5908 - I saw the same Johnny Carson show and no, Lee Marvin never said that Bob Keeshan carried him out. In fact, Bob Keeshan served in the Marines he never saw combat much less ever being at Iwo Jima. Lee Marvin was NOT shot in the buttocks but was hit in the buttocks with shrapnel which served his sciatic nerve. As a former Marine I can assure you that anyone who FOUGHT at Iwo Jima is a hero. Lyrics: I was born under a wandrin' star I was born under a wandrin' star Wheels are made for rollin' Mules are made to pack I've never seen a sight that didn't look better looking back I was born under a wandrin' star Mud can make you prisoner, and the plains can bake you dry Snow can burn your eyes, but only people make you cry Home is made for comin' from, for dreams of goin' to Which with any luck will never come true I was born under a wandrin' star I was born under a wandrin' star Do I know where hell is? Hell is in hello Heaven is goodbye for ever, it's time for me to go I was born under a wandrin' star A wandrin' wandrin' star When I get to heaven tie me to a tree Or I'll begin to roam, and soon you know where I will be I was born under a wandrin' star A wandrin' wandrin' star

I am 82 in a month. This song still sits with me as I traveled most of my life esp. going where I had never been on purpose. Never had a sleeping place, a job , friends or family and sometimes not enough money to get me further down the road. I mostly did this while dragging a wife and kids with me. I am still a house painter and drywall man after 54 years but settled down these last 5 years. What a voyage..

I remember this song from the spring of 1970 [No 1 for 3 weeks BBC Charts], although I was just 11 at the time. Along with Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge over Troubled Water it kept the Beatles last single - Let it Be - off the No 1 slot. This was Lee's only record, but he was not really a singer, he was a Western actor, but this song is from his musical western Paint Your Wagon. I seem to remember that the B side was by another normally non-singing Western actor Clint Eastwood from the same film. Perhaps this single was released prior to the release of the full soundtrack album of the film. I did not get to see Paint your Wagon for nearly another decade, when I, by then a young adult, visited relatives in London on New Year's Day 1980 and it was shown on TV that afternoon.

I have played and loved this gem since 1969. In the 80s, when our kids were small,. they used to tease me sarcastically by imitating Lee's gravely voice when I played it. No more! They love it now! The movie was great, too. The legendary Clint Eastwood didn't hurt, either! It was also played at the funeral of a friend of mine who also used to work in the music business. It seems he had chosen this classic ahead of time.

Lee Marvin wasn't known for singing but still he made this song sound so beautiful. One of my late fathers favourite song but when my father use to play this song I used to tell him, why do you keep playing this crap song over and over again and he said to me, son one day you'll learn to appreciate this song. Dad was right once again.

Funny story.. My grandpa loved lee Marvin (particularly this movie too) and all the classics like gene autry, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, etc. my grandpa passed away some time ago and I have named my son after him; his name is Gene. Ironically, this is actually the ONLY song that will calm him down and put him to sleep. I know my grandpa is looking over him somewhere from up there.

Aleksandar Pesic thats what's happens when you try to piggyback off someone else's star. You, You are the star since your birth. Some Stars stand still. Some fly like an eagle. And some Stars flame out, And the stars that flame out, we think their dead. But the truth of the matter eventually they become a black hole and wonder in the shadows, in the dark. A true wondering star.

An urban legend claims that actor Lee Marvin said on The Tonight Show that he had fought alongside Keeshan at the Battle of Iwo Jima in February-March, 1945. However, Marvin not only never said this, but had not served on Iwo Jima (having been hospitalized from June 1944 until October 1945, from wounds received in the Battle of Saipan),[4] and Keeshan himself never saw combat, having enlisted too late to serve overseas. not much.
