@a2redneck Other companies make them out of steel and brass, but aluminum is actually a good material for bullet molds. It heats up quickly, does not excessively hold heat (requiring a cool down period when you are casting lots of bullets), it's lighter (ask an old time caster who tries to use a steel 4 cavity mold or God forbid, a 6 cavity steel mold) and best of all for us shooters, they are way less expensive. A six cavity aluminum mold from Lee costs less than a box of 500 lead bullets.

Do you have to lubricate the mild before every use or is it just a one time thing?

@a2redneck Yep. I've heard a lot of people who only use iron or brass molds, but plenty who are happy with aluminum molds. There's no way these have lasted so long and continue to do so without them working for those who like 'em. As for WD40 or spray lubes, remember these molds are going to get over 600F and most volatile fluids are going to cook off. Waxes, Alox, etc will melt, but will remain in the joints. I was guessing something like motor oil might work, but is it worth the risk?

aluminum? Why can't you make these molds out of steel? Also, can you use wd-40, PB blaster or something as lube?

I am having nothing but trouble from the new lee molds with the pins. The pins keep moving out of there place. Making very bad bullets. Very annoying. At this point they are of no use to me.
