    It's crazy how rock tumbling can change the look of the lead pellets so much. Gotta love casting your own bullets from cheap lead

    Great video, mainly because of how you twist the pellets apart - stellar idea! I'm currently using a Marty Arms .32 mold that absolutely requires snipping the sprues TWICE - once off the mold bar sprue and second to true it up close to the pellet. I tumble in a Franklin rotary tumbler for 12 hours with just the cast pellets (typically about 300) and no other pellets or balls, they come out same as yers, all chrome black and quite round. Then I powder coat and they become .325" diameter for #0-1/2 buck. Loaded in a 2-3/4" Fiocchi hull along with 22 grains of Green Dot powder, a paper towel "buffer wad" (props to Wade Rush!), an MG42 wad, and a bingo chip overshot wad = killer buckshot shell. You can tell Lee that due to your video I'm getting their .32 buck mold and they should let you keep yours!!!

    Nice. Lee molds cast faster and less sprew than other molds. Glad they are coming out with more options. I just ordered three sets of handles to have extra handles around in case one breaks.

    I've owned two of them for years. They really don't make nearly as nice a finished product as the larger caliber strings-of-three molds. For special rounds, I use only the best of the three balls, which is the bottom one. The middle one has two cuts and the top one is a Death Star.

    I make hundreds of pounds of Lee #00 per month. My wife and I can each pour about 16 - 20 lbs per hour. We would go stir crazy if we had to cut them up. We have a lead-dedicated clothes dryer (our old one that the heating element failed on) that we throw 30+ lb loads of it in and run it for an hour. It breaks up every single string. When I get 100 or more pounds broken up, I throw them in my Harbor Freight cement mixer with some abrasive strips stuck to the inside. I turn them for about an hour and they look pretty much like your final product, which is beautiful, by the way! Keep on castin' and blastin'!

    I can’t believe how well that Lee mold cast from the get-go. Seriously impressed! Are you using a clip on wheel weight like alloy, or something harder than that? Would a Frankford Arsenal Tumbler work, or do you think it might be too big ?

  • @theshotgunscientists

    @theshotgunscientists

    Any tumbler will work as long as it can hold a few pounds at a time. And yes clip on wheel weights.

    Great video, I like the idea of making my own shot. I have a couple questions after watching a lot of your videos. When you're weighing a shotshell load for how many grains of powder to use, do you count the wad, fiber wad/shot card weight with the shot weight? Where do you get your lead for smelting? Can I melt down any size lead shot for casting a larger caliber shot? What kind of oil do you use on your hulls for roll crimping? Is a small bit of Vaseline a viable option? Thanks brother

  • @theshotgunscientists

    @theshotgunscientists

    11 ай бұрын

    Vaseline works fine, you don’t normally count weight until after the wad is in place. If adding buffer you gotta take into account the weight of it too. Pellet size doesn’t matter, lead weight is lead weight whether it’s birdshot buckshot or a slug. Buckshot and slugs produce less prey than birdshot foes.

    Hey Tyler and Josh a quick question my my standard BP roll crimper 10 gauge literally eats my Remington new Hulls scruffs the heck out of them. My question do the gaep10 ga. Roll crimpers eat up the new Remington three and a half inch Hulls? Sincerely yours Rick of Orange

  • @theshotgunscientists

    @theshotgunscientists

    11 ай бұрын

    Honestly man I’d go with the reloaders network 4 pin, it’s cheaper than the gaep and does almost as well. The gaep will put a super hard taper on shells you’re just trying to roll crimp, it’s more of a fold crimp finisher that can also be used to roll crimp. Gaep may make other roll crimp tools that are specifically meant for just roll crimping though. The one I have will do it but you have to have a very high stack height.

    Im glad lee is coming out with more 18 cavity BS sizes. Curious question... Do you you always hit the mold blocks to release the pellets instead of hitting the handles? Ive seen plenty of mold blocks damaged in this manner. I know its no problem with Sharpshooter or martys style molds. Thanks for the video...

    I think after time it'll cause wear in the bolts holes that hold the blocks to the handles. One of my 9mm 6cav that has cast in excess of 15k . The boys got it wrecked tapping on the blocks. BUT, it's your mold. Awesome video.
