I cant argue with anyone's choices because Zeppelin was the ultimate album band. They NEVER did a bad album. Page is a wizard and each player a virtuoso.

Though I agree with the “ear fatigue” point, I think you have to try to rise above that when making a serious list. Led Zeppelin IV’s impact is undeniable.

I agree, same with Zeppelin II. Everybody trying to be too cute and "contrarian" and ending up sounding silly in the process.

I understand one may have ear fatigue with Led Zeppelin IV, but I think it's not very objective or serious to put that as your dead last album solely because of ear fatigue. I would have liked legitimate, well-thought out reasons for the controversial pick. Being a contrarian for contrarian's sake doesn't make your opinion interesting or more understandable... but hey, we like what we like. It is what it is. If LZ4 is your dead last, that's fine.

My rankings of my favorite band:- 9. Coda 8. In through the Out Door 7. Presence (Achilles Last Stand is one of my favorites) From here on I say all of these albums are all time greats, Led Zeppelin had the greatest album run ever. 6. Led Zeppelin 3 - Still adore Immigrant Song, love Gallows Pole, Celebration Day, Out on The Tiles and Tangerine. 5. Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused is in my top ten, adore Good Times Bad Times, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Communication Breakdown, Your Time is Gonna Come. How Many More Times is amazing but makes me really uneasy, enjoy Black Mountain Side and You Shook Me 4. Led Zeppelin 2 - Heavy Rock Classic with arguably Page's greatest riffs, Heartbreaker, Ramble On, Thank You, Whole Lotta Love are my favorites here, really love What is And What Should Never Be, Moby Dick(intro/outro version) and Bring it On Home. 3. Houses of the Holy - Brightest and most experimental Zeppelin album but brilliant at the same time. Adore No Quarter, Song Remains the Same and The Rain Song, love The Ocean and Over the Hills and Far Away 2. Led Zeppelin 4 - The iconic album, Stairway to Heaven and When the Levee Breaks are my top 5 favorite songs, adore Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop and Battle of Evermore. I enjoy Rock and Roll, Going to California, Four Sticks but not as much as others. 1. Physical Graffiti- My favorite album of all time with my favorite song of all time, the legendary Kashmir. It is incredible that it has 13 out of 15 songs that would be greatest hits for any other band and I think 10 of them are overlooked gems. The Rover, In My Time of Dying and In The Light are in my top ten favorite Zeppelin songs. Love Sick Again, Night Flight, The Wanton Song, Custard Pie, Ten Years Gone, Down By The Seaside, Houses of the Holy, Trampled Under Foot. Bonham's, Page's and Jones's best works are in here, this album, this band is just unparalleled in musicianship, tightness, power and song catalog.

I’m only 28 and used to listen to hip hop growing up. I discovered Led Zeppelin in 2011 and I’m addicted - like...literally addicted to their music. It’s special to me in a way, that I’ll never be able to put it into words. My favourite album, along with my favourite song is 6 - Kashmir 4 - when the levee - tied with Stairway (especially the sunset edition) 2 - ramble on 5 - the rain song 3 - SIBLY 1 - D&C 7 - Achilles (obviously) 8 - ITTOD - I’m gonna crawl 9 - CODA - we’re gonna groove That being said I live for the live material. I wish they professionally recorded every show especially from 69-72

Yeah, I love Martin but he certainly has some questionable tastes in music. Zep is just untouchable in their day and you really can't compare them to anyone. When he mentions a BOC album as being better or sounding better its just madness. How can you not love Jimmy's production? He's actually the best. All those records sound fresh today. Even Zep I and II.

Wow I totally disagree with Martin about Led Zeppelin's production. I think because their production was so great on their albums is one of the reasons they escalated themselves into Beatles territory with their catalog. For the most part production on hard rock albums is the one element usually lacking, it seems record companies didn't care about how hard rock bands albums sounded

Really enjoyed that Guitar Hack. I like the unassuming and modest way you host the show too. I'll have to check out more of your videos. There's plenty to discuss here but I'll just throw in a couple of comments, hopefully maintaining the positive and constructive spirit of the show. Firstly, I'm conscious that we're discussing Zeppelin here; who were arguably to '70s rock what the Beatles were to popular music in the '60s. In short, what the hell do I know ! That said: I would ask if being tired and jaded of hearing certain songs/albums should be a criteria ? For example, we wouldn't say that of any Beatles record or Dark Side of the Moon. Would the familiarity of Abbey Road or DSOTM affect their ranking ? I absolutely get what the guys are saying but I don't think we can factor it in. The point was well made about the sonic qualities of Zeppelin's albums - tremendous depth and dynamics. I have a real fondness for Houses of the Holy; but the second album was one of the very first rock records I ever heard and to me it's still the most complete and accomplished example in the rock genre. With the band's debut it's the best one-two in rock history, and Plant's vocals on these albums were stunning. Thanks to everyone for a great show.

I’ve got several books from Martin and he sounds like a critic from rolling stone magazine who hates great bands. He constantly hates a bands best albums but loves the lousy ones. He sounds just like a “rock critic” and that’s the thing I hate about him. But I will say his books tho I don’t agree with half of them are still good

Couldn't agree more, Heartbreaker is a top 5 greatest riff and and an iconic solo. I have probably spent an entire week just humming that riff over and over. Led Zeppelin 2 has arguably Page's greatest and most badass riffs and Bonham is on fire throughout, along with gorgeous mellowness too with Ramble One, Thank You and What is and What Should Never Be, it's a classic album.

The only LZ songs that i skip when i put on their music are Hot Dog and Bonzo's Montreux. Everything else is pretty golden. When i rank their albums, it really comes down to what moods i prefer and the cohesion of the songs. With that said: 1: Houses of the Holy (my hot take is that this is extremely cohesive, despite its experimentation) 2: IV (their most cohesive record i think, but it is true that most of the record is overplayed. I generally prefer the more experimental or heavy stuff, but the influence this has is massive.) 3: III (the only song here that i dont absolutely love is Hats Off. It could work on the album, but not as the final track it is. This is my favorite record for Plant. He still has plenty of power, range, and aggression on this one, while incorporating some beautiful performances) 4: Physical Graffiti (their most diverse work, but id argue its as incohesive as Coda. The fact that Plants vocals span from his 1971 peak to his absolute worst in 1975 doesnt help. I love the work on this, but Plant should have taken a break.) 5: In Through the Out Door (not their most monumental achievement, but (sans Hot Dog), theres not a bad track) 6: II (a great album, but i dont come back to this much.) 7: I (Same reasons as II, but Led Zeppelin is less realized at this point than they are when they recorded II) 8: Presence (I love Achilles, and i like the rest. The styles here are fun, but not quite my cup of tea) 9: Coda (its enjoyable)

S Tier: Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin IV, Physical Graffiti A Tier: Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin III, Houses of the Holy B Tier: In Through the Out Door C Tier: Presence Led Zeppelin II will always be my favorite, In Through the Out Door will usually be at the 7 spot, and Presence is last for me (I don't count Coda). But spots 2-6 are pretty much interchangeable, it depends on my mood.

Coda is the album the Martin plays the most? I rest my case. When the show first started I was excited to see a Led Zeppelin book that I don’t own, and I was in a rush to go check it out, but then a few picks and I see where Martin‘s head is at, and I wonder if he could even write about Zeppelin in a helpful way. Cut the video short, better things to do.

The brown bag on In Through The Out Door came from a quote from Joe Strummer. He called them dinosaurs and said that the only reason anyone bought their records was because of the gimmicky album covers. JP responded saying "We could release an album wrapped in a brown paper bag and still sell a million copies.

As a teenager, "In Through the Out Door" held very little appeal for me. It doesn't rock that hard, and as a teenager, hard rock (and metal) was most of what I wanted to hear from Zeppelin, or from any other band. Now, in my late 40s, I absolutely love ITTOD. It's one of my favorite Zeppelin albums. This is my list, which probably has something to annoy and anger almost everyone, hehe: 1. IV (Zoso) 2. Houses of the Holy 3. Led Zeppelin II 4. Physical Graffiti 5. In Through the Out Door 6. Led Zeppelin III 7. Led Zeppelin (first album) 8. Presence 9. Coda

@@captainkirk70 Despite its last-place ranking in my list, I do like "Coda." I have to admit that it doesn't really feel like a proper Zeppelin album to me, in that it consists of odds and ends from the band, rather than being a cohesive album of songs that were originally intended to be released, but I do still like it. It's quite fascinating to me that "Wearing and Tearing" and "Darlene" were both recorded during the "In Through The Out Door" sessions, and yet, They were not included on that album. I've read that before John Bonham's tragic death, Jimmy Page had been intending for the next Zep album (after ITTOD, that is) to be a much more hard rocking, guitar-oriented album. I seriously wonder whether "Wearing and Tearing" and "Darlene" would have been included on that next album, because both songs really do rock, especially "Wearing and Tearing," which is almost a Zeppelin take on punk rock?

  • @captainkirk70

@@christianman73 Agreed. I do like those songs. I'm not sure they are really up to the greatness that Zep were known for. But they did put The Crunge on HOTH. Which to me is absurd. A dud that surely didn't need to be there. I'd have preferred a cover or something. D'yer Maker isn't great either. Especially in the context of the rest of the songs. I only love 3 songs on Presence. So that will have to move to last place for me. ITTOD was a step up from that. So it seems Jimmy was already in a decline that he never recovered from. I would liked to have seen what happened if Bonzo hadn't died but I have a feeling they'd have broken up in a few years anyway. Jimmy was just too far gone. And Plant has made clear he prefers to be a solo artist. Even though all of his work pales to even Zep duds. Coda moves to 2nd from last purely on the strength of it's deluxe version. The high points on it aren't as high as the 3 on Presence.

  • @captainkirk70

But Coda really doesn't belong on this list. Its a collection put together after a band has broken up. Never intended or released as an actual studio album. There are plenty of bands that have released collections of "B-Sides" etc that would not have been counted in a different band ranking.

I can't speak for Canada, but most of my upbringing (plus all of my teens, 20s, early 30s) was in the US (New York City), and those who are not from there, or haven't spent a significant amount of time there, will never fully understand the massive oversaturation of songs on the radio (and other mediums), and how it affects listeners. It is very real. Sure, there are some exceptions (as always), and it varies from person to person, but there are many songs (even albums, to an extent) that I can't enjoy quite like I used to because I've heard them way too many times. There are dozens and dozens of stations (Pete will know exactly what I'm talking about.) With all those options, there is that much more redundancy. You run from one station to the next, only to hear the same song(s) you left the first station for in the first place. Think about that, and multiply it by something like 100. It goes on and on... to the point where you become thoroughly disgusted with the radio. I'll occasionally pop on the radio (mostly for classical music, but sometimes for pop tunes), but the little bit of radio I listen to is mostly online (I'll sometimes check in on the NYC independent stations), and granted, even where I am now (which I won't divulge, atm), there's still repetition when it comes to the radio. I haven't lived everywhere to validate my opinion, but I think US radio is a different beast than radio anywhere else.

Guitar Hack, what are you thinking?! LZ IV at the bottom?! I don't care how many times Stairway To Heaven is played these songs are solid and hands down classics. I don't know what you guys are talking about w/Rock-N-Roll? I'm not a fan of the drums but, Bonham kills it w/that song. The one song, besides Stairway, I'm sick of is Black Dog. If I never hear that one again, I'm good! Four Sticks and, especially When The Levee Breaks, god those songs I can listen to over and over and over again! But, I will say you redeemed yourself w/In Through The Out Door. I can understand the headbangers not liking it but, it's the Zeppelin album I listen to on repeat besides LZ IV. Pete, I pretty much agree w/your list but I would've put LZ IV in the number one spot and Physical Graffiti in the number two. I'm also a big fan of Houses Of The Holy. It's an album I listen too a lot besides the other two I mentioned. And, I agree Hot Dog is stupid! And, Martin, you're points of view are always interesting. I think you're right about the first album being a bit dated. I agree to a point about the second but, since it has some better known songs, I'd rank it a little higher. I'm also glad you didn't put In Through The Out Door at the bottom. I think, in the last few years, that album is more appreciated by fans than it was in '79. Maybe it being their last album might have something to do w/it? But, on it's own, it's pretty damn good in my opinion. I won't bore everyone with a ranking but, I'll break it down like this: LZ IV and Physical Graffiti the cream of the crop, their very best, period! The absolute best of Zeppelin. In Through The Out Door, Houses Of The Holy and LZ II, great albums. LZ I, good album. Presence and LZ III (in my opinion) not bad but not great, though I absolutely adore Immigrant Song and Nobody's Fault but mine. Run For Your Life is good too.
