The day my Dad died I drove to our childhood home. I sat outside (different people lived there) and played this on repeat for about an hour. This song saved my life and my sanity. This song sustained my soul while I was in an abusive marriage. I knew I wasn’t alone as long as I listened to this song. ✌️♥️🎶

So looking forward to this reaction ! During the intro Jimmy is bowing an acoustic guitar behind the wailing sounds of Jonesy's multiple keyboards. This is the only time Jimmy bowed an acoustic guitar. The main guitar riff when the song kicks in is eerie and evil af sounding. The drums are immaculate and Plant's vocals are a home run out of the park. This song can't be categorized or pigeonholed as a specific genre of music. They were inventing a whole new style of music. They went into this realm again on ITTOD on Carouselambra ! "Well, love - it's pain can devour you, if you are never alone..." The song is a minor key and Jimmy plays the guitar solos in a major key.

  • @markdrechsler5660

That is not a bow on an acoustic guitar. Rather, Jimmy attached a device called a Gizmotron to his guitar. It was invented by Godley & Crème, formerly of 10cc.

This song had several working titles, most notably "Everybody Makes It Through" but also "In The Morning" and "Take Me Home". As someone else mentioned, Jimmy added multi-tracked bowed acoustic guitar to the opening while Jonesy used a VCS synth. According to Jimmy, they always knew what the construction of song would be, however he had no idea Jonesy would craft such an amazing synthesizer intro. The beginning sounds almost like a call to prayer in the square of a far-off, ancient land as the synth notes snake in one ear and out the other to eerie effect. Then they lower the boom and it grinds into a gritty, slightly menacing groove from the depths of an almost sinister "somewhere". When the guitar comes in, it's almost like it gives the feeling of ascension; I definitely get the feeling of being lifted up out of the darkness and into the light. Zeppelin was never afraid to go to unexpected places.

My favorite thing about Zep's studio albums is that Page created the guitar army for each song, laying multiple lead and rhythm guitar tracks on each song, panned to different locations in the stereo spectrum. Every song sounded like they had anywhere from 2 to 6 guitarists playing competing riffs and solos, but it was all just Jimmy being Jimmy!

An overlooked aspect- I feel- of their music is the fact they were students of life, history, love, wisdom, they tried to share universal truths and wisdoms in their own flavor. They were also students of music, even as masters they kept pushing themselves. You can hear it all, a deep respect of life ( yes they were wild) , being alive and their craft, they loved and respected those that came before them

We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to hear the pure genius of Led Zeppelin. Four components: Robert Plant’s amazing vocals, there’s no guitarist like Page with the rare ability to create the most unique riffs and melodies and John Paul Jones. The most unassuming member with unbelievable bass lines and song arrangements, not to mention he’s an extremely innovative keyboardist. Last but not least The one and only John Bonham. Not only did he have the greatest sounding drums in musical history, his take no prisoners mind blowing style was like thunder clapping down with perfect timing. All of these components were amazing by themselves but when you put them all together…………Led Zeppelin 😮

This is from a time and a space that is long gone. We used to lie in our beds, headphones on, totally dark. And experience these strange vibes. Never played on the radio or even mentioned in the press. It was about freeing your soul and just enjoying wonderful music. The Physical Graffiti album was an alien thing sent from beyond the beyond to us teenagers to lift us up and make us real human beings. We became better persons listening to it. It is fun, it is strange, very strange, it sounds like the orient or far east … hypnotic, even druggy, but always positive. It was like putting all of music history into a blender, blues, rock, pop, classical, avant-garde … singer-songwriter stuff. And this is what you get. The pacing is perfect. We would get up and flip the sides of the two LPs and then lie down again. There is no central theme to it except that everything is allowed, love is supreme … and have a good time. This, the opening of the third side, is perhaps as perfect a combination of songs any band ever assembled. Babies were born out of this. Perhaps I'm just an old dude reminiscing about olden times, but this is my church. And this is what I believe. Hallelujah and thanks for your comments and reaction. Cheers boys🍺

@@retromom5421 too true the who was out about four years before zep , but I was never a big Who fan , for me mr moon was a bit gimmicky and splintered his kit by kicking it about the stage and bonzo splintered his kit with his sticks. music is art and art is subjective , so i do value your opinion . the world would be a very grey place if we all liked the same things . thanks for the comment . all my best to you and yours

I love watching how much you two appreciate Led Zeppelin. If you haven't already listened to Led Zeppelin III give it a listen. It has rock, blues, and folk all in one album.

Listening to this today, it makes me conclude what's great about them is that they define the edge between chaos and reaaon. A lost art, artistically.

What Zeppelin was able to do was capture emotion better than most bands from their time, and much better than bands are able to do now. Technology has actually managed to squeeze the emotion out of songs.

John Bohnam is so strong with his rhythm. No wonder Led Zeppelin decided they couldn’t go on without him as their drummer.

Back in my younger days, when I used to indulge in the happy smoke, In The Light was one of the best songs to listen to after that last puff. Not that I'm particularly proud of that, but it was perfect for the mood!

No shame in that man, I have been enjoying cannabis for 50+ years and still do to this very day. I am relatively healthy, having a ball and at peace as I am listening to tons of great music in my retirement. Rock On and Enjoy!

Zeppelin has tons of "out of the box" tunes in their catalog, but this one is my favorite. It's just goes in so many different directions and all of them feel and sound fantastic.

If Zepp had only released this one album back in the day, they would still be considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time. This album is a work or art from start to finish.

Better late than never to become a Led Head🙂 Now that I got that of the way, I am a little jealous that you get to hear them for the first time as mature adults. You both are able to appreciate it for their abilities to engineer, compose, play, and transcend not only through the ages but your mind as well. I would be curious if you both would tell us (Led Heads) at the end of your journey of Led Zeppelin how many songs you all find that are not worth listening to again. ✌

Great reaction to this incredible song. Page is Zep, he changed rock music forever with his genius writing, groundbreaking guitar playing and production. He had the vision to put this incredible team behind him and the rest is history. Everyone is on point (as usual) on this one and I particularly love Bonzo’s tasty fills. 👍🏻

Ever every time I hear a Zeppelin song and marvel at how good it is, another layer is revealed and it's just incredible. Their songs could have been half as good and still would generally be a cut above almost everything else out there. Still sounds great all these decades later. Not much music you can say that about.
