LED Garage Lights - Watch before you buy!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Are the multi-panel LED garage lights effective? They may not be good for all situations. Watch this to see a balanced view on the effectiveness of these lights compared with other traditional LED lights.
The lights in this video that I am using is:

Other similar lights can be found at all the big box stores like Costco, Home Depot, and Lowes Hardware.

After many years as an electrician and installing similar fixtures, I found that this type of light will do much better in areas with higher ceilings. The higher ceilings will allow for much better light distribution. A higher lumen count is NOT always better. In a garage with typical 8 foot ceilings, its more about spreading the light to all the corners of the space and getting good coverage across the floor.

So true. Also with low ceilings those lights will blind you, or at least make it very uncomfortable.

I have a 1200 square foot shop with 12 foot ceilings. In this shop, There are 6 fluorescent fixtures that are 4' long. Additionally, there are 4 standard bulb fixtures. I replaced the standard bulbs with the LED 4 panel lights and they work great! I can only imagine that the lights that you tested would be great as well.

Cieling height makes all the difference. I installed the LED's in my ten ft cieling garage and am extremely happy with them. These lights are also sold with a dimmer option.

I'd consider LED replacement tubes in the fluorescent fixture - standard height garage, but with the LED technology, IDK what brands are reputable/reliable. Would expect the cost to be less in the long run, if the life expectancy is as claimed. I'd use a LED fixture as shown here, in the bonus room / attic area; those ceilings are higher.

I bought a three panel 4k lumen panel set for my garage with a 9 foot ceiling. Here is my takeway. 1. It is brighter and provides better lighting than the single LED bulb it replaced. But the caveat is that it is a 3 panel fixture and I adjusted each panel to distribute the light where needed. I've seen many of these 4 and 5 panel setups and I honestly don't believe that they provide anything additional over a 3 panel, in fact, they may be of lesser value to a shop worker. 2. Cool white and slightly bluish-silver lighting can be hell on the eyes after a while.

Good input; much appreciated. I have a standard, two-car garage, with the ceiling lights basically placed one on top of each vehicle spot. I replaced the single bulbs in them with 6000 lumen, three-panel LED ones, and angled the panels to hit the four corners as well as the front wall where my workbench is located. Wow, what a great improvement! In the end, it's all subjective; this worked out very well for me.

I have one of the LED lights with the panels in my garage. One of the things you can try is adjusting the angles on the panels. If they are flat and parallel to the floor it’s more of a spotlight while if the panels are more perpendicular to the floor it helps disperse the light a little better

The 10,000 Lumen light is 6500 kelvin which gives a blue tint as seen in the video. It also causes eye strain. 2800 Kelvin is soft white or a warm yellow glow. 4000-5000 kelvin is cool white which is perfect for any light application. I prefer 4000 Kelvin over all of them as it is bright and easy on the eyes. Color Temp ( Kelvin) makes the difference in lighting. 6000 may look brighter but you can see better with 4000-5000. I spent a lot of money to find this out and took down $500 worth of 6500 Kelvin Tube fixtures and switched to 4000. Same with led bulbs in my house, 4000 is just right for me and women love 4000 to put on make up compared to 6000. I did find the bulb he was showing in 5000 kelvin for $14.00 and they work great compared to the 6500 he showed.

Dispersion matters. As others pointed out, light needs to bounce off the objects you wish to see and reach your eyes. Thus simply increasing the radiance from a single point source quickly hits constraints in a space like a garage, which is more spread out (wider), especially one like yours where the stuff contained inside forms a lot of occlusions. So you'll get much better results investing in multiple light sources that are spread out around a wide room. This is also why the long light bulbs (whether CFL, LED, or whatever) disperse light more. LEDs also tend to have a narrower band of wavelengths, so, as with flourescents, the light may seem harsher. During daylight, with a garage door open, you get both better dispersion, from an entire side of the wide open room, and a broad range of the visible spectrum. It's also why interior decorators/designers get away with using less bright lights to make a room more visible, by using multiple ones targeting specific areas, for general lighting (allowing to see the general space itself), task lighting (specific areas), and accent lighting (things like pictures, pots, or shelves on the wall). This is also why film sets use so many lights and reflectors (along with controlling mood and all that stuff).

I bought an 80’s house-1 bulb in the middle of a 2 car garage. The panel led was a quick fix. Didn’t have to replace or add any fixtures. The proper thing to do is add more lights around the garage. Either 6 standard lights or maybe 3 tubes. This product is also great for renters because it’s quick and easy.

I think i found the problem, the (2:57) 6-panel light only has 5 panels and i do not know if you realize that 1 you can tilt the panels upward a little to expand the light area and 2 if you get the ones that are 5000k instead of the 6500k there will be a whiter light that will be brighter than the blue tined light.

I've gone through several of these multi-panel lights. I have yet to find one that lasts for over a year. Some of them died within a month, while others lasted longer, but they eventually gave-out. I've tried all different brands, though I suspect they all use the same (crappy) internals. They start to die by flickering, sometimes accompanied by zaps and snaps that sound like Frankenstein's lab in an old horror movie. Sometimes I've managed to get the seller to replace them, but more often than not they'll either ignore replacement requests, or promise a replacement but never send it. I love how bright these lights are, and that you can angle to panels to suit your lighting needs. But they're not worth the hassle and expense of constantly replacing them. After watching this video, I'm going back to a single LED bulb in the ceiling sockets.

Having installed the lamps I found my garage door remote would not work with the lights on. Nor did the DAB radio due to interference. Having done a bit of research it seems that these cheap Chinese imports are not made to the same standards of reputable manufacturers. I ended up purchasing LED batten lights from a known manufacturer with no interference issues. Buyers beware as cheap LED lighting can cause interference with nearby electrical equipment.

It's hard to tell without a light meter. Your eyes and the camera adjust to different light levels.

It's never smart to look directly at a light. I have two of the multi panel LED garage lights in my 18' ceiling garage with 4 panels each - both angled to shine in different parts of the garage - and I love them - worth the cost and the do the job.

That is not a standard 100 watt bulb. That is a 100 watt LED for incandescent screw in conversion bulb.
