In high school, he would get 20 rebounds and had no idea that was considered really good. Didn't watch NBA games growing up. He was magic. Magic Johnson's autobiography, on the other hand, was about studying games with his Father (when they had time), practicing drills with his favorite teacher's husband, and playing one-on-one with a friend where he would pretend to be a different NBA player and imitate that player's game. Even towards the end of his career as he was picked for the Dream Team, a reporter commented to Jordan in an interview about Larry Bird being more of a symbolic choice for the team. This pissed off Jordan and he responded: "I don’t care how old or in pain Larry Bird is, you name me a forward in this league who’s not already on the team who can rebound, throw the outlet pass to get the break going, shoot the three-pointer, play in the half-court and has the presence of Bird." Shows even broken down and retiring, he had that level of recognition and respect amongst the rest.

@@heartoflion3736 - I don’t consider MJ as THE Goat, great yes, Goat no. You’ve got to understand the era of ball Bird played in and it was a helluva’ lot tougher than Jordan’s time. The main difference is Jordan was all about himself, just look at all the statements his teammates have said. Now, go and listen to what Bird’s said and his opposing teams players had to say about him as well. I’m not all about “ show” and believe being great means bringing people up to the standards, lead by example. Again, MJ was great in his era, but we can’t compare the times they played in the league with each other and give it to MJ......apples and oranges.

"I patterned my whole game off Larry Bird. He paved the way for all small forwards to achieve excellence. Too many people think that he was just a jump shooter but he was so much more. He was also one of the *GREATEST* passers ever in the league." He said a few more accolades however I can't remember them all. "I would rather guard Michael Jordan than LARRY BIRD. You needed to read his mind. He was already planning his next move." James Worthy "His calling card was that he's just a hick from French Lick and if you believed that for one second, you were going to get embarrassed". So glad you realized just how good Larry was! Bird said he used to play with the Black guys in pick up games when he was in high school. He said he wanted to play with those guys because they were so good and it up'd his game! The most unique part of Bird was his work ethic!! He was always practicing, and running laps before games when the other team was having a shoot around. when you don't have the natural physical skills like almost all black athletes, then you beat them with your mental ability and court awareness. Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale have both said, they are in the Basketball Hall of Fame because of Larry Bird!!

There's a reason he earned the nickname Larry Legend before he even hung up his shoes. The old saying "He was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers" applies to Larry like no other. Think about it this way. Magic and the Lakers were stacked DEEP! Kobe used to ask the Legends "How did you get beat by Larry? He looked slow as hell." He WAS slow physically but that brain was always 3 steps ahead. If a Team had problems keeping up, imagine being his Teammate. Look at these passes and tell me how in hell do you practice that? Magic and Larry had a great rivalry on the Court but an even Greater friendship off of it. MJ had a love, hate relationship for years. MJ and the Bulls lost to Larry and the Celtics the 6 times (if I remember correctly) they met in the Playoffs. People talk about being SAVAGE today. Larry was a BRUTAL SAVAGE. He'd bitch about being disrespected if you put a White guy on him to guard. Tell the other team the play, then do it! Think you want to throw hands? Dr. J was the ONLY one that got the better of him because 2 of his teammates were holding Larry. No problem. He dropped 36 points on them after that so who really won that one? Larry was on the downhill slide when The Dream Team was put together yet he was still selected. And what a dream it was.

28 was Quinn Buckner. Good Defensive Guard. Won Olympic Gold Medal and NCAA champtionship in 1976. College Basketball announcer now. Maxwell was 31. Great forward. One of the best finishers around the rim ever. Always had a high FG%, even thought I don't remember him having a good shot. But right under the cup, he was killer. Very good defensive player. Could be a bit streaky. Could take over games sometimes too. Energetic guy. Totally a guy you wanted on your team. He totally keeps that LA-Boston rivalry alive. He still hates LA to this day. LOL. Will never let Magic live down his mistakes from the 1984 Finals. He has a very funny story about Larry Bird's first day of practice and how the pros wanted to show him up. Look for that. He also talks about how small town Bird was. All he could talk about was basketball. Nothing else. I don't think with today's focus on stats beyond points that Maxwell would have won the Finals MVP. Bird was clearly the reason the Celtics won. He didn't shoot well and averaged only 15 pts to Maxwell's 17, but Bird had 15 rpg and 7apg which is crazy. Bird had a big game in the close out but by then the storyline was set that Bird had a poor series. Maxwell was a big Part of the Celts defense. He would take the best scoring forward leaving Bird often covering the power forward......but this also freed up Bird to wreak havoc on the other team with his anticipation and help defense which was fantastic. In the 1981 Finals Bird had back to back 5 steal games.

Great video. You could show just as many videos of Bird playing phenomenal team defense (all NBA defense 3 times) or rebounding videos or scoring videos. He was a multi-dimension hoop stud of the highest order. Check out game 6 of the 1986 finals. He had telepathy. He was decades ahead of his time in hand and wrist strength, hence the instant bullet touch passes. If he grew up practicing 3s he would own today’s game and record book.

Basketball was number one for me as a kid and I was lucky to have my first consistent memories of watching basketball being the 83-84 season. I remember big things from earlier but 83-84 season is when I started watching it in a different way. Taking the game itself in and thinking about it when I was shooting hoops in my driveway alone when none of my friends were around to shoot with. Trying to apply things as a little kid. Being allowed to stay up for the Celts Lakers championships. Then other big games as I got a little older. No KZread and we definitely weren’t inside for clips on the local evening news the next day. Opting for the Sports Illustrated videos in my subscription and trying to earn money around the house to buy as much as I could. In ways I’m jealous that younger generations had or have so much at their fingertips. All love though, happy that kids have it. Lifelong Celts fan but I appreciate so much from growing up in that era. Some things will always be better from particular eras. I can say it sucked being in college and having no way to watch those Bulls teams without going to a bar. Usually went even when I didn’t feel like being at a bar. And always paid the price. So I love watching takes on stuff I knew about but missed. There’s a lot of good reviewing going on. I appreciate legitimate stuff, different stuff from different people. We’re all different but can appreciate different takes on things that we all like. I like your take on things. Your approach is cool man. Keep it up

Two comments..I was 2 months shy of 22 when Larry Bird retired and watched all but 3 years of his career, his 1st 3, he really was a great player..And speaking of great players..I'm a Celtics fan, but recognize greatness across the board of teams..from MJ n the Bulls, to the Admiral n the Spurs, to even my most hated rivals, the Lakers..I hated them as a team, but respected so many for how they played the game from Wilt n Kareem to Magic all the way forward to the late great Kobe..I will always praise the great ones of the NBA..

That's a huge key as to why those Celtics teams were so incredibly difficult to beat. Not only were they a great collection of talent and well coached but the ENTIRE team was involved and had to pay full attention to the game. If you weren't fully prepared to step on the court and play you likely weren't A Celtic very long.

Bird played basketball like his life literally depended on his team winning. Nobody left his heart, soul, and body on the court like Bird did. Even Pat Riley said if he needed a guy to take a shot to win the game he'd take MJ, but if he needed a guy to take a shot to save his life he'd take Larry Bird. All due respect to Lebron and all the others out there, but Bird was head and shoulders above them all at small forward. And the question of GOAT is of course subjective, but he's certainly in the top 5 players ever at any position.

Thanks for an enjoyable react vid...."what a time to be alive?'" Absolutely right. I can't even watch NBA now. It doesn't have to be a football game anymore, but the lack of physicality now is ridiculous. 80s NBA basketball and 2020 NBA basketball are about as close as lacrosse and checkers. Every sport did the exact same thing....adjusted the rules to favor offense. and every single sport is far less appreciated by its fan base than it was back in the day. True fans appreciate good D almost as much. Keep pluggin' young fella.

Good one here brah. Gotta give the bod to Larry Legend as far as best SF though. He was more clutch in crunch time and never shied away from big moments. Their passing is about equal, but still would give the legend the nod. If you ever get a chance. You might want to check out John Stockton aka the best pg of all time. He is not flashy but his assist record of 15,623 and steals record of over 12,000 will never be broken...

All the top tough 90s guys came up getting roughed up by tougher 80s guys. 1980 through 2000 was about as exciting of an era to watch. It held 4 complete dynasties, and saw the birth of a 5th in 99 with the Spurs. Showtime Lakers, 80s Celtics, late 80s early 90s Bad Boy Pistons, 90s Bulls are all top 10 all time teams. All had to butt heads with each other. That pinnacle of complete teams created Jordan. They created a team that was almost impossible to beat in a 7 game series. If you couldn't beat the Bad Boys or the 80s Celtics, probably couldn't beat the Bulls. They were the only team that ever had to design itself to stop 2 completely styled dynasties. Made them extremely hard to gain advantage of in a series. Not only did that special era create all those teams, it literally pummeled and beat into greatness the spawning of that 90s Bulls run. Its going to be so hard just to recreate the scenario again to create that. It was just a perfect moment in time for basketball. I hate being that guy that just says my generation is better crap, because everyone wants to witness the greatest ever. We all wish we could watch Babe Ruth hit a homerun, or watch a rookie Lew Alcindor.. That era was special in so many ways. The toughness of that league can be measured in so many different ways. Just what the 80s spawned, Jordan and that Bulls team, is epic. Not even counting the unbelievable shows they put on themselves. The stars aligned for some reason in that era.
