Larry was also MVP runner up five times. So of his 12 seasons, there was 9 seasons where he was either rookie of the year, MVP runner up, or MVP winner. And the other three seasons were the year he played 6 games before having multiple surgeries and sitting out the year, and his last two years when his back was so jacked up that he would lie on the floor when he was subbed out instead of sitting on the bench. Several of his great games from his last two years are on KZread in their entirety, and if you wait till he subs out and watch close, you will see him watching the game while lying on the floor in front of the Celtics bench. Check out what might have been his last great game, late season 1992 vs the Blazers, he started off ice cold with 2 or 3 airballs before starting to warm up. He lies on the floor when subbed out cuz his back is all jacked up, but he still drops 49 points, with 7 of them in the final 18 seconds of regulation, including a buzzer beating 3 to send the game into overtime. And the injury report from that morning said it was doubtful that he would play at all that day.

yep, Larry's vision and ability to think a few moves ahead was special. He was on another level mentally where you wonder if he was psychic or something. I think that's why he succeeded without the leaping/running ability of the others. You don't need it so much if you break on a ball/play before anybody else. I do think this is the same kind of psychic ability that Tom Brady has as he processes what a defense is about to do without blinking an eye.

I always equated as Magic was great at setting people up and getting them the ball. Bird was great at finding the mistake or hole in the defense. With Magic, it was get to your spot and I'll hit you, but with Bird, it was just find A spot and I'll find you.

If LeBron James had Larry Bird’s drive, he would have been forced to retire by cumulative injuries like 5 years ago. Guys like LeBron and Mailman last so long because they take care of themselves first and foremost. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but in the eyes of longtime fans of the game, that no-holds-barred, obsessively ball hawking, injuries be damned, stone cold assassin mentality is what separates the legends of the game from what you might call the statistical legends. James is going to get his points, be a pain on defense, and make his team better; Bird is going to completely demoralize the opposing team by halftime, foul out their best defender in the third quarter, blanket their best scorer in crunch time, clear a dozen boards, wreak havoc on their passing lanes, all while dropping dimes left and right, making his teammates into perennial all-stars. If the announcer didn’t say Bird’s name during a possession, he was getting a quick breather or back stretch on the bench. Rookie James got a typically bad early aughts Cavs team squeaked into the first round; rookie Bird took the basketball equivalent of that Major League movie roster into the conference finals. This right on the heels of taking the Indiana State Sycamores, aka the “Who?!” In “Hoosier,” undefeated to the NCAA Championship game, where he pushed Magic’s Spartan squad chock full of future NBA stars to the brink. If you know, you know. Really, LeBron James’s name comes up on Larry Bird videos because he publicly goated himself when he’s maybe top 5 at the small forward position, and Larry Bird is the most obvious retort to “well, who’s better?” Has LeBron been a dominant player in this league? Absolutely. Has he been beaten and eclipsed over and over in his career by a handful of even more competitive players (Shaq, Kobe, Timmy, Dirk, and Steph)? Absolutely. He never dominated a whole decade the way Elgin, Logo, Wilt, Russell, Dr J, Pistol Pete, Bird, Magic, Jordan, Shaq, and Mamba did. Bird’s only rival was Magic, and those two were the league’s Scylla and Charibdis in the 80s. Even Jordan couldn’t touch them while they were around. LeBron plays a lot more like Kareem, i.e. the long game. Has he already done ten times more with his soapbox and charity than MJ and Bird ever will? Also absolutely, and also a lot like Kareem in that regard. Good on you sir, LeBron James. In an all-time starting five, though, Bird’s the small forward.

Not sure if you heard correctly. Bird won "3 consecutive NBA MVP awards." I was very fortunate to not only grow up in Boston but watched either on TV or in person at least 90% of all Birds games from his rookie year until the end. Local Boston TV showed EVERY Boston Celtics game home or away once Bird joined them. Also my best friend had Celtic season tickets so we went to quite a lot of Celtic games at the old Boston Garden. Bird was just an unreal all around player. As Magic Johnson said "There will never ever be another Larry Bird" I agree. Larry Legend.

When you wonder why people bring LeBron James into the Larry Bird GOAT conversation, it’s because LeBron has proclaimed himself the GOAT; to me, that’s off putting. Larry and Magic, played real basketball. They played hurt; the refs let them get rough, and it was a way more physical game. Today, IMHO, the game has become soft. They stub a toe and sit out for two weeks. I’m not taking anything away from current players, just saying that the game is very different. Larry and Magic were rivals, both had their careers ended by injury or illness, and ended up great friends. There is a video of Magic mentioning that when he was diagnosed as HIV positive, Larry Bird was one of the first and only players to call him. Says a lot.

the reason they are compared a lot is that they are both FORWARDS. the top players include at least 3 guards (magic, michael, oscar), and 3-4 centers (kareem, russell, wilt, possibly hakeem). the top 2 forwards are among the greats in skill-set, stats, and overall greatness. behind them (conclusively) among forwards we have duncan, doc, karl malone, barry, durant, havlicek, elvin hayes, pippen, barkley, etc. of the 2 players in question: lebron has a huge edge in athleticism, durability, and longevity. they can both reboud and play defense, with a smallish edge to bird. they can both pass with a large advantage to bird. they can both shoot , with an immense advantage to bird. lebron may be a better ball handler, is certainly a more accomplished dunker. clutch performance favors bird but their overall postseason and finals stats are close enough for someone to make a case for lebron. king james gets the overall edge in greatness mostly for his huge lead in years played and cumulative numbers, as well as absurd athleticism. bird is even more SKILLED than lebron, is tougher emotionally, has 5 times as much class, and many of us, including myself would rather draft bird in an all time fantasy draft. still its tough to ignore the most reasonable conclusion that lebron is the greatest forward of all time, adding everything together. neither of these players is a match for michael, magic, wilt or kareem, by any stretch of the imagination, if we're looking at their effect on their TEAMS. much of what we hear in the media is just an advertisement for nike. lebron, kobe, tom brady, derek jeter, are vastly overrated in hype , and this is intentional from espn and other outlets. of those 4 players i just mentioned from different sports, lebron and brady are tremendous, but not the GREATEST of all time, and, jeter is not a top 3 shortstop by any means, and kobe simply isnt a top 25 player. kobe had a 45% fg pct, against a league average of .485 . he was only known as a shooter/ scorer, he's no playmaker, rebounder, or defensive star. this counting of RINGS as a measure of individual performance is preposterous. kobe won 0 championships without a great team and a great coach. few players ever did (olojuwon , perhaps, a few others).

Red Auerbach heard about the injury and made Larry go to the Boston Garden and shoot around for a while from all parts the court. Decided he was shooting just fine and signed Larry to the Celtics. Larry has said that he never had the same feel for his shots in the NBA as he did in college. Bird was a starter on the ‘92 Olympic team (the Dream Team). That alone puts him in the conversation. The greatest play I’ve ever seen was when Jordan threw the ball behind his back from half court to Bird near the baseline so Larry could hit a jumper. If you want to be amazed watch the documentaries about that team. You couldn’t put a team together today that would win against them.

Growing up a Celtic fan and a fan of Bird as a teen in Eastern Mass was a treat. Any fan of Bird knows the name of Dan Dyrek. Dan was responsible for making sure Bird's back was sturdy for long enough to play a basketball game as mentioned in this video. The treatments were so grueling that when Bird retired he took the back the brace that he spent off hours wearing for several years and blew it to shit with a shotgun. That Bird would shovel the gravel himself to build his Mother a driveway is just Larry being Larry and it's a shame he had such a hardcore work ethic and value system that he'd do it himself and speed up the inevitable as Bird's back was going to go anyway. Before the injury Bird rarely missed a game. In 1992 Bird asked Dyrek to clear his schedule and travel with the Dream Team for the summer, and Dyrek did just that. He knew Bird wanted to participate and he also knew Bird couldn't do it without him. In 1992 when Bird flew he laid on his stomach just as he would lay on the floor during games when playing. Bird was absolutely broken by this point and a shell of himself but still capable of reaching back...Game 6 vs the Cavs was vintage Bird. The Sunday afternoon triple-double vs Phoenix was another. But it was over and to ask Bird for more would have been wrong. When the Olympics were over Bird promptly retired ahead of his contract automatically renewing.... "Dave," Bird said, "I'm done. I'm retiring." "Larry, are you sure?" Gavitt said. "I think you should take a few weeks to think it over a little longer." "I know what you are doing," Bird said. "I don't want the money. I didn't earn it, and I won't take it. Let's just get this over with." Legend

    1. Bird not only won 3 straight MVP's, he was 2nd place in each of the 5 surrounding years. He was first or 2nd in MVP voting for 8 years in a row. He is also one of two players since 1970 to be first-team All-NBA as a rookie (Duncan is the other). 2. I think James has had a better career, since he has been great for so long. But Bird's first 9 seasons are the best first 9 seasons ever (it's not even close), and his peak from 1983-88 is the best peak ever, I think. 3. Here is how great Bird was. Another video breaks down Bird's GOAT case, and points out his outlet passes as being the greatest of all time. Celtics would streak down the court after made baskets and Bird would find them for layups with 80-foot passes. That facet of Bird's game, which he is described as the best player ever to do, isn't even mentioned in this summary OR in the ultimate mixtape. It wasn’t just his back. Apparently he also got elbowed in the eye. It caused him to have double vision… and he still played. This double vision lasted so long that he was wearing special glasses/goggles in the next game. My pick is Larry Bird and Larry Bird and Larry Bird. There I said it. I could spend writing a paperback about Larry Bird as I've read his book with Magic called *When the Game Was Ours* and there was a NY play based on their rivalry. I've read blogs by sports writers of that era mainly involving Bird but also Celtics and other teams they'd played. I've just started his autobiography "Drive". But he also blew out his Achille's Heel in both feet and needed surgery. He had to quit only because his body was worn out. But players today are damn wimps. And *way* overpaid.

Everyone has their favorites and their opinions, which is fine. That's how it should be. And when it comes to Larry we hear all kinds of stuff, building him up, saying he's this or he did that, etc, etc. But all that stuff comes from his peers, coaches, doctors; they're the ones making the case, not the fans. We can look for ourselves at the highlights and put them together with what they are saying. That all builds a solid case for Larry. Also, my top 3 are Magic, Larry, Jordan. But I have tons of respect for other greats like Wilt, Russel, Pete Maravich, Oscar Robertson, Kobe, etc. Those guys have to be given tons of respect because they've earned it.

I was lucky enough to get to watch Larry Bird through his entire career. I believe Larry Bird got this best out of his God Given abilities then anyone to ever play the game. It is fun to debate who is the best, but this started way after Bird retired. I think it is safe to say Bird is on anyone’s top 10 list that knows anything about the NBA and it’s history. When it comes to Lebron James he has more athletic abilities than anyone I have ever seen. I am not a fan of his off the court because he wants to be a politician on social media, which is his right, but he is so sensitive if you do not agree with his narrative. If you have 40 million followers not everyone will see things as you do. If Lebron had the killer instinct ofJordan,Kobe, or Larry it would not be fair. Those three I mentioned didn’t care who you were or if you liked them. They just wanted to destroy you mentally and physically every game. Bird in his prime would live in Lebron’s head and force him two recruit teammates in the offseason. Larry would never call Magic and ask if he wanted to play on the same team. When Jordan was getting his butt handed to him in the late 80’s he did not want to play for the Pistons he used it for motivation to get better. Shaq left LA and Kobe one two mote titles without another superstar. Lebron without superteams = 1 title.

He realistically only played 12 seasons. His last year he played like 6 games then retired. That being said here's his yearly mvp finishes. Rookie of the year, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd, 2nd, missed 76 games due to injury, t-10, t-14 retirement. From 81-88 he received 67% of all mvp votes. 12 all star appearances. 2 finals mvps, Olympic gold medal, ohhh and he's the only player to have won ROY, MVP, finals MVP, coach of the year, and executive of the year. As a coach he took a .400 team to 2nd in the division his first year to to the finals his 3rd[and final] year. He literally did it all.

All time greatest I have Jordan, Bird and Magic. This comes with the caveat that we're talking individual performance and disregarding Birds injure. If you take into account how much they elevated their team mates I would argue that atleast Bird, maybe Magic too, was a greater asset to their team than Jordan was to his Bird in particular had the ability to make his team mates two or three notches better than they ever wouldve been without him. For Magic this was undoubtedly a harder task having James and Kareem at his side but non the less. Imo these are the three greatest to ever play the game. Kareem and Kobe is up there too but I cant honestly put in the same league. *Favorite* player however is Charles Barkley, also one of the best players ever but more importantly one of the realest guys every. Dennis Rodman also very highly ranked on my favorite players list due to is jaw dropping effort, the man was like a pitbull on crank. Didnt care much for his attitude but God damn, was his hustle inspiring. And of Larry Bird, no matter where he ranks, goat or not, few players are as entertaining and admirable as Larry Legend. Also, on a side note, Larrys and Magics friendship is one of the most beautiful things in sports history. That adds to both Birds and Magics story.

I can answer your Thumb Nail question! Yes he is the true GOAT! When it comes to Lebron and MJ. There is no comparison. MJ is the Goat. But just like Lebron flops. Jordan was really only untouchable when he was sick or someone pissed him off. He needed motivation. Bird did that shit with ease. Bird played when he wanted too. And left the game when he did what he told his opponents he was going to do. All Facts! But my opinion: i think he could have hit 100 points in some games. But, did feel like he had too. So here's the full story of the 18 hours surrounding the face plant Bird had in game 5 of the playoffs with the Pacers: Bird's back was so bad the night before game 5 that he had to spend the full night in thr hospital in traction, he shows up at the garden early to hide how bad his back is, played the first half like a BEAST, face plants at the end of that half, breaking his cheekbone and suffering a concussion, retires to the locker room (the first time an injury took him off the court in his career), the Pacers take advantage of his absence and reverse the lead, woth his team in trouble, Bird comes back, plays the final 18 minutes of the game putting up 17 points and 7 rebounds and I think he also had a steal, leading his team to a win. Sounds totally impossible, right? Complete,, 100% truth! Any player in anyone's top 3 who could have done that, besides Larry Legend, himself? Not a chance any of today's players would have the fortitude and sheer force of will to dominate a fourth quarter in a playoff game while battling through constant back pain, a concussion and a fractured cheekbone. After spending all night in traction and was the first to show up for practice, as always. Bird was a whole different species from other NBA players, period. You should check out why he's called the best passer, too. No other player made the full court pass off a rebound into the waiting hands of a teammate into pure art. His accuracy was like Tom Brady - he'd get the rebound standing BEHIND the net, and effortlessly deliver the ball into Parrish's or McHale's hands like BAM, for an easy 2 pointer or lay-up. Whole play would take less than 5 seconds and was a pass that Bird made so many times the other team should have expected it and figured out an answer for it, but Larry Legend was unstoppable. His passing game has to be experienced because you won't believe it - man was a stone cold sniper. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dXmszNyyhLXenrQ.htmlsi=AUQtoQgedJaN7SKD

My basketball fandom goes back to the 1960's. I began playing basketball for my grade school when in 5th grade (1969-70 season, age 10), which was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's rookie season in the NBA. I'ven seen many of the great players over the subsequent 50 years. Almost every generation touts the best of that era as the GOAT, which is natural because that's who you saw play first hand. You often didn't see the greats of previous eras because they had since retired. The current generation touts LeBron James as the GOAT because he's the best player of this era. Older generations usually back Michael Jordan , including myself, because he's the best we ever saw.

His finger twisted and snapped when it hit the ground. He said how it affected his shooting. He was a better college shooter, and look at how great he was in the NBA.
