Leatherman Raptor Disassembly

How to take apart Leatherman Raptor trauma/medical shears. T9/10 security Torx bits are required. I am removing the handles of this new pair to send out to get an application of Cerakote in a custom color. Also shows how/where to tighten if your tool is getting loose.
1:19 - symptoms of loose T10 handle screws
2:06 - T9 screws: scissors and clip
2:35 - T10 screws, parts of seatbelt cutter and handle lock
3:36 - tips for difficult (spinning) screws/bolts
5:07 - parts layout, disassembled
Reassembly post-ceramic coating: • Leatherman Raptor Cust... (purple color!)
In case anyone was wondering, the lime green color is a perfect match for Scotch #2060 Rough Surface painter's tape!
I have no relationships with any companies.

I'm that guy that does not understand the concept of a "security" dot. That explains why I couldn't tighten it. Never thought I'd go to a KZread video to see how to tighten something.

The BIGGEST problem with Raptor shears is the distal pivot screw (it's actually T9, not T10) that you had difficulty removing at 3:45. It's threaded with Locktite inside of that unique little torque locknut which spins with tightening. If you carry it around every day, the screw gradually loosens separating the 2 blade edges when deployed as shears, until whatever you're cutting "folds" due to toggle. Every now and then I have to re-tighten that pivot screw or it won't cut anything; orthoglass is especially bad. I even ordered quality Wiha bits due to the frequency with which I was re-tightening. It gets to the point where the head of the T9 eventually strips and you can no longer tighten it yourself. I've sent these Raptors in to Leatherman for repairs twice in the 3 years that I've owned them, and it's gotten to the point where I'm about to give up. Leatherman's decision to use that particular pivot nut makes me think they don't want customers tightening/fixing the problem themselves. A colleague prefers the Xshear for half the cost, and they have a UFO screw for adjusting the tension. Raptor has the extra gimmicks and portability, but is far inferior to the Xshear in its main intended purpose: cutting. I bet they could be cerakoted too. Thanks for the video and good luck.

Sounds like an insightful comment, thank you. I hope I can get it to stay snug when I reassemble after coating... For some reason the XShears look more like craft scissors than even the cheapest disposable trauma shears, but I will give them a try if the Raptors give me any trouble.

CHEERS thank you for your effort. I have a pair of these, and I might give it a go as I've "jimped " the ring cutter, cutting some wire(far too hard for the ring cutters) at work.

Just reassembled mine. Ran into issues with the screw on the seat belt cutter self tightening and it needs blue lock tight. Also had issues where I mixed up two of the threaded inserts... they are all different sizes.

So my problem is the seat belt cutter. If I loosen it enough so that the blade opens with slight resistance, there's play where the handle lock meets the triangular spring lock. If I tighten it to where there's no play at the triangular lock, I can't open the seat belt cuter past halfway. I have no idea where to go from here. I've disassembled it and cleaned / lubed everything. The whole reason I took it apart is because the seat belt cutter wouldn't open past halfway. I'm in the same boat now but the shears are super clean. Progress /s. Thoughts?

You have to use “lock tight“ for the screws…

I cut a thick padded foam leather motorbike garments at an accident. It cut it like butter. So yep, pretty sharp.
